I don't agree with the fact that Milan is not 'authentic', whatever that is supposed to mean. Italy is very different from a place to another and the American stereotypical depiction of the country is not very accurate. The majority of Italians don't live their lives as eternal vacationers who play mandolino eating spaghetti and doing nothing else. Being busy and going to works is the normal 'authentic' lifestyle for everyday Italians too.

Hi Lost. I'm an italian following your channel from a while.
As an italian living close to Milano i have to say: in general you're right.
But keep in mind: italy, especially in the North is very packed up with people. You visited Cinque Terre April 24th which is the day before a very important national holiday, that's why it was so terribly crowded. Liguria is well known for this problem also in italian minds.
San vito lo Capo in July/August, as well as Positano would be as packed as cinque terre.
This is to say: Time to visit Italy is a variable more than any other countries in the world i've been to,if you wanna avoid crowds. Completeley forget July and August. Choose June/May/early September. And avoid mass tourism places in national holidays.
Italians like italy more than anyone else! You have to avoid US to have our amazing country all for yourself 😂
If you will come back to milano, feel free to write. I will try to give you a better experience of northern Italy 😊

You asked… IMO I vehemently disagree that Milano is not the authentic Italy. Rather It is a just different part of Italy and a beautiful, and elegant part. Yes, it is not like the south or coast which is also a different part of Italy. Yes, it is a commercial center but it is a necessary part to ensure Italy thrives. For a change of pace just go an hour north to the mountains. Roma, Milano, Venice, Firenze, Padova, Brindisi, Portofino, Capri, Napoli, are all Italy just different and that is what makes the country so awesome!

Just like those guys claiming Naples is the authentic Italy. It's the stereotypical Italy that people want others to believe, chaotic, run down, poorer.
Italy is a top 10 economy, military, trading nation, wealthiest citizens in the world, dozens of iconic brands but that's what most think of Italy.

    • @gabrielesantucci6189

Naples and south Italy is the Italy that they know or think they know from the films or the many italian americans who mostly came from the south, so they espect more "southern" Italy with all those
typical stereotypes about Italy and Italians and Milan or the North Italy in general disappoints them a bit!

Incredibly iconic town but there's much more authentic on the Amalfi coast like Atrani, Ravello and Vietri. And if you keep going south there are hidden gems like Maratea, Tropea and Scilla that literally only Italians know about.
On the Adriatic side you have the regions of Marche, Abruzzo and Puglia, so much more besides the usual tourist traps! And Italy is EASY to get around 🚆

My wife and I visited Genoa and Cinque Terre last year in May as part of our honeymoon. In my opinion, while the villages are gorgeous, nothing beats doing the trail between the 3 northern villages (I think it will be fully open by 2025).
We arrived in Monterosso from Genova and we were astounded by the number of people so we said f*ck it, let's make the trail, even though we thought we were not prepared for that. We might've been lucky that it wasn't that crowded, but seeing the iconic village of Vernazza for the first time after 2h of trekking will live with me forever.
Once we were in Vernazza, again we felt really crowded, so we walked around for 20 mins, got an Aperol spritz and a quick bite, then again, said f*ck it, the sun was beginning to set so we rushed to make the trail to Corniglia.
Now this is something that I will recommend to anyone visiting Cinque Terre. Do the trail between Vernazza and Corniglia during the sunset. It was absolutely empty and the golden sun was always on our back, shining over the green cliffs that crash into the sea. I get teary eyed remembering that moment.
Finally we arrived to Corniglia just as the sun was hiding in the sea and I would say even though there were some tourists, it wasn't close to the numbers we saw in the previous 2 villages. Corniglia is sitting on top of a cliff so it has no beach, but it's beautiful, old and imposing. I'd say it's definitely underrated. There is a mini-square withba panoramic view in front of a church where everybody gathered to watch the sunset with a glass of wine.
Mystical experience and I hope many will be as lucky as us to appreciate Cinque Terre in the same fashion.

Milan is not overrated or inauthentic. It’s a modern, working city with real people going about the business of daily life. That *is* authentic, by definition. They have a finite amount of tourist-oriented attractions and activities, and those tend to be clustered within a square mile radius. Most of Milan is for the Milanese, which is as it should be.
Positano and the Amalfi do look stunning. But let’s not kid ourselves: They’re about as “authentic” as the Italy pavilion at Epcot: Yes, there are “real” Italians…and their main activity is catering to American tourists. Unfortunately, we really are everywhere. Can’t get away from each other, no matter how far we run…

After having been around parts of Southern Italy I have to find myself agreeing with you. I was really surprised when I visited Rome how different it was than I expected. It seemed dangerous, and I saw 3 homeless people beating up another homeless person. Another thing that surprised me was the sheer amount of graffiti, it's like every single surface in Southern Italy is completely covered in graffiti, I had never seen so much in my life. Such a beautiful country, people, heritage, art, architecture, and yet so many trying to ruin it with litter and ugly graffiti. I will say however, that parts of northern Italia were the most special places I've ever been to. Cortina d'Ampezzo is one of my favorite cities on Earth. Excited for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics there!

Totally agree with the part about finding a hotel in a close-by town and not staying in the popular ones, it saves you money and also gives you a break from all the crowds when you go back in the evening and enjoy a quiet restaurant with delicious not-for-the-masses quisine. I visited the entire Amalfi coast and stayed in a town called Cava de' Tirreni, that I highly recommend, it's about a 40 minute car ride to Amalfi, which was a delight every day beacause of the views

I lived in Rome for a year and can wholeheartedly agree on your comments on the city. It is definitely one place on earth that is truly special. Sure it has its grimy parts and is overcrowded with tourists as so many other places in Italy but it is a place everyone should visit at some point.
Also totally agree on Sicily being a fantastic place to visit. I've been there twice, first in a two week stay in Taormina and then doing a road trip around the island, and it is a marvelous place to visit. It's also a nice winter destination, as it never gets really cold, I did my road trip in early december and temperatures never went lower than 15-20º C, super nice. And the food there is amazing!
Milano is a place that you can visit for a couple of days and then move on. Don't make it the cornerstone of your trip unless you have other reasons to be there.

Timing is everything when it comes to visiting popular places. But let's not forget that TH-cam and social media are contributing to the "problem". The more everyone sees these lovely places, the more people put those locations on their bucket list. Including people who wouldn't normally visit such places. I think this phenomenon is here to stay and you have to find ways around it if you are passionate about travel

I would say that this video is for people with a certain amount of income...as you said yourself a few times through the video...expensive prices...and also expensive destinations.
I've visited Italy multiple times and I would say the real Italy is to be found on the countryside and alll the little villages between the big ones. Learning the language is also a big help and look for trattoria's with a lot of trucks parked around them...means there some mighty good food to be found. Italia sempre nel mio cuore ! Ciao Ciao

you know Matt, it's by making videos like yours that the popularity of places increases... in this video you said go to Catania, it's beautiful there are few people... then there will be other TH-camrs and Instagrammers who will do the same and In a few years Catania will become as crowded as the Cinque Terre. I used to go to Cinque Terre in the 90s, and there was no one there! Same in the Dolomites. Venice is the extreme example of this and now they are forced to put a limited number of visitors who can enter the city. A prayer to all TH-camrs and Instagrammers: when you find a hidden gem, leave it hidden! I'm not against tourism but when a place becomes too famous it turns into hell and its magic dies. I know that for many of you it's work, feel free to post the videos and photos but don't say where it is. Otherwise you will also ruin the lives of those who have always lived in those places.
