      One of the things that broke Kate out in the US (to the degree that she did break out) is that the song "Hello Earth" was strongly featured on an episode of Miami Vice. It was very early in the release cycle for the album, so much so that the producers had to have gotten a hold of the song significantly before release. It goes to show how good they were at their jobs, which was to put cool songs in their show before anyone else had heard them. It also laid the groundwork for Kate to get to #30 in the US with Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God). The song has now peaked at #4 in the US, for now, but wow is it heavily emphasized in the new trailer for Stranger Things

    I grew up in the 2000’s, but Kate Bush has been in my ear since before I could talk or walk. My mom, who was very close to her British and Irish culture, had every one of Kate’s albums on either CD or Tape. She would play them in the car, and one of my earliest memories - that memory where you can sort of feel your brain booting up to actually begin remembering things - was me sitting in the car, in my kids chair, waiting for her outside of a shopping center. Kate’s “Army Dreamers” was playing, and my 4-ish year-old self was hooked. Needless to say, I’m almost overwhelmed by Kate’s sudden resurgence. Living in the U.S., when I mentioned Kate to even those from my mother’s generation, they had no idea who she was - and my generation? Forget about it! 😂 Fast forward to today, and just about everyone has heard Running Up That Hill. I’m so glad Kate’s brilliance has been exposed to so many new people.

As you may know its a good ten plus hours on the road, so to break the boredom I said let's play someone I think you'll like, Kate Bush. We played her on spotify for hours, then just a couple of weeks back there's Kate on Stranger Things and now one new teenage fan has joined the club.

    • @AutPen38
      @AutPen38 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I find it endlessly fascinating that Peter Gabriel's arbitrary banning of cymbals on PG3 ("Melt") contributed to the creation of THE drum sound of the 1980s. Not only are there no cymbals on 'Hounds of Love', but there are no cymbals on 'In the Air Tonight', which arguably has the most famous drum fill of all time. It's completely mad that a song that is legendary for its compressed and gated drums (the sound pioneered by Gabriel, Padgham, Lillywhite, and Collins) has no hi-hats, crashes, or rides on it. When Gabriel first suggested the "no cymbals" idea, everyone must have thought "PG is crazy, but he's the artist, so let's go along with it", but ten years later (or 40, because it's ever-present in modern synthwave) bands were still using the gated reverb trick that his rule ultimately led to.

    • @mightyV444
      @mightyV444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AutPen38 - Peter Gabriel's intuition must've been on fire back then! 😊 And that 'lucky coincidence' with the gated drum sound was another piece of that puzzle, too! (Quotation marks because there's no such thing as 'luck' or 'coincidence' - Everything happens for a reason! 😁)

      @AutPen38 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you, Warren! I have a confession to make; I have fallen in love with Dusty Springfield! No day is complete without hearing at least ONE of her songs. The song that I love the most by Dusty is "The Look of Love".
    Dusty Springfield is the most successful music artist that England produced after The Beatles. Her songs are timeless classics. Dusty was a singer, a producer and a television presenter. She was ahead of her time. She also had a remarkable come-back with a collaboration with The Pet Shop Boys. She was also a lesbian who "came out" in the 1960s. She also took a public and international stand against apartheid in South Africa during a tour there ... Dusty promoted The Motown singers and musicians on her TV show, and on Ready Steady Go in 1965 (introducing the teenage Stevie Wonder to the British audience).
    "Dusty in Memphis" is a classical album by this legendary singer. Thanks.

    I've been a fan of Kate since I first saw her perform on Saturday Night Live (in the US) in 1978, and I absolutely fell in love. Several years later, I saw her concert video, "Kate Bush Live at Hammersmith Odeon," and that did it for me. Had I not been in the hospital, recovering from surgery, I would have flown from the US to London to see her in concert, no matter what the cost. Her albums are absolutely very much works of art, even her first album, "The Kick Inside," which has a hold on me like no other album or artist. That album needs to be played as a single experience, every bit as much as Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." But every one of her albums are amazing, and I so desperately wish they would re-release her Hammersmith Odeon concert on BluRay, as well as her "Before the Dawn" concert, which were her only two "real" concert "tours," 35 years apart!

Great video, and what a delight to hear the story from the down-to-earth, friendly gentlemen who were involved in creating that true wonder of modern music. Bravo!

    I've been a massive KB fan since I heard Wuthering Heights at age 7. And I concur with what you said towards the end of the video: I too have been genuinely happy and excited about this new success for weeks now, it feels almost personal, which is weird as I'm just a superfan but it's not my own song or achievement in any way. But it just feels sooo satisfying.
    Great episode Warren, I also loved your Wuthering Heights video. As a German expat in L.A. I think we share the almost surreal experience of watching U.S. audiences discover Kates music at a point in time when nobody expected this to happen. Brilliant!

    One of my favorite things is watching young people discover older songs. I follow quite a few "reaction" channels just so i can get the second hand rush of seeing some 19 year old kid discovering Boston for the first time live on his channel. So when this song became a hit, i was very excited...mostly because I got to be one of those 19 year old kids. Not only had I never heard this song, i had never even heard of Kate Bush before, so i got to experience this song for the first time right along with all of the kids watching Stranger Things.

    Warren, one can immediately sense your absolute reverence for Kate as an artist and force of nature that she has always been. Thank you. What a wonderful deep dive into Kate's career leading up to Hounds of Love also. As an American, I was one of the few reading the English music press back in 1985 and I think it was perhaps an NME or Melody Maker review of the album that caused me to buy it. Like you, I too wore out a few cassettes and albums, immersing myself in this incredible piece of art. Once I had Hounds of Love, I immediately bought Kate's entire library and have since enjoyed all of her body of work for decades but Hounds of Love will always hold it's place as Kate's crowning artistic achievement for me. It's so purely realized and so specific to the place and time in her life that she wrote and recorded it, yet the genius of her themes and artistic accomplishment have absolutely universal and timeless appeal as you point out.
    Your passion and drive to track down and conduct all of these interviews with Kate's collaborators is much appreciated as well. You're an excellent writer, presenter and interviewer and I enjoy all of your videos but this one took it to the next level. Like you, I am incredibly happy and grateful for the Duffer Brothers and their team bringing Kate's song into their show. It feels like a bit of vindication, especially as an American, to see the rest of the world and especially the younger generation realizing what Kate's music and vision is all about, I am sure that this has been the most thrilling event in Kate's professional life in several years to receive worldwide acclaim and recognition for her masterwork.
    Back in the 80s and 90s, at least in my American circles, I knew very few others who were into Kate's music as it is so imaginative, free and emotional, most people I tried to introduce her music to, at least over hear in the states, just thought it was weird, they just didn't get it, at all. But that's common with artistic genius, they're often not recognized until the artist is gone, I am so happy Kate is around to experience this outpouring of acclaim for her vision. I recall in the 90s, my family hosted two English foreign exchange students, just for a few nights. In speaking with them, they asked me what kind of music I was into and once I had said Kate Bush, it was like we both spoke the same cultural and musical language, they were teenage girls on their first trip to the States and I will always remember our long conversation about how amazing she and her work was.
    Thank you Warren for this video, it made my day!

    Brilliant. So well deserved for Kate. It's a classic, ageless, despite it's sonic era. Beautiful, dynamic, sacred, haunting, and so so original. Personally, I love The Dreaming as much, if not more, which I fell in love with on first hearing, too. There's an equal amout of emotional variety, sensuality, brooding, and experimentation, there, too. The only difference is it was not awash with the big hits, but I don't need big hits, just Kate's ludicrously intelligent, emotional and stunning talent. As for changing the name to placate the American market, as someone pointed out recently, God Only Knows, didn't fail because of a word. Kate is the artist for me, that stands outside of everything else I listen to, then, and now. It's a personal thing, a sort of connection, that when you have it, is there for life

    Kate has been one of my favourites since forever 😊.
    Her “AERIAL” album from 2005 is also truly brilliant. In fact I would rate it as my favourite of Kate’s albums (if I had to do such a foolish thing as choose a favourite). After more than a decade long hiatus she returned with this double album and it contains some inspired music and gorgeous production.
    “Joanni” on the first LP of this double album, about Joan of Ark, is genius imo. Pi, How to be Invisible and all the rest are not far behind.
    Her lyrical imagery and depth are always second to none but how she crafts those into beautiful melodies and creatively inspired and accessible songs is masterful.
    She deserves all this success, and more! It really only goes to show that a great song is always a great song.
    The big trick in the ‘80’s was to get all that electronics to sound human. People like Kate and Peter Gabriel did that wonderfully.

From the beautiful vocals to the fast forward tape that on 99% of albums would be completely redundant, nothing is out of place. Reminds me of some of Coltrane's music where he seems to be improvising with random notes, but you realize this is pure genius and it makes the tune. The "Coltrane" album from 1962 is a good example.
    Liked the interviews, but the last guy was a huge disappointment. Did he really try to argue that Kate is "actually a great singer"? Her voice may be an acquired taste for some with no exposure to good music, but not even a half-deaf person can make a claim she is not a fantastic singer. Comments like this don't belong in a place where any professional was blessed to work with Kate, or a channel covering this great musician. Very disappointing that he would make such comments. I think you changed the subject after he said that as there was no proper response to his inane statement. Well done.
    As for the American critics, well, there is not much to say. I think especially with female singers they have been very ethnocentric and nationalistic. It's like female singers from other countries don't exist.

      Thanks for your comment! FYI as a British person I have had to listen to a lot of people in the US saying they didn’t get her voice (there’s some comments here for instance) so I don’t have a problem with Brian expressing that. Thanks ever so much

    Peace Warren. An incredible video on an incredible artist, zoning in on an incredible song re-emerging at an incredible time! Someone in Kate’s life will inevitably get this video to her and as a UK Hip Hop artist I would like to join in and just confirm the span of Kate Bush’s influence and inspiration to be wide and broad. Kate Bush God bless you, you are an amazing original that continues to defy the odds by being the best you that you can be! And that’s what I get from your artistry. Massive respect ❤️💐

    Loved this album when it first came out. Hounds of Love and The Dreaming were my introduction to Kate's wonderful music. Such an amazing creator and performer. And thank you so very much for devoting time to discuss this one!!! I played this SO much when it came out and actually destroyed the speakers in my car one night blasting Waking the Witch. Kate's power was just too much!

    Warren, thank you. A fabulous treatment of the story of "Hounds Of Love". It, like "The Dreaming", "The Sensual World", and "Aerial" changed my life and musicianship, with many heartbreaks and joyfulness centered around them. In the past dozen years, I found another equally inspirational artist, from a later generation:
    Imogen Heap.
    She, like Kate Bush is "the real deal" in every way I can imagine, and adds Tech Innovation and improvisational prowess to the mix as well. Hopefully, she won't have to go as long as Kate has without proper worldwide recognition.

    Definitely one of the best albums of all time. The Ninth Wave is possibly the most disturbing piece of popular music ever produced but just so intoxicating.
    Thanks Warren, really appreciate this video.

      Definitely agree. I remember playing the A side a couple of times and loving it.
      I then turned it over. After listening to the B side I recall sitting in awed silence for a couple of minutes. Amazingly moving album.
      PS, did the engineer guy say the deep "You'll burn" voice on Waking the Witch was Kate Bush herself? I tried replaying that a few times but couldn't quite hear what was said.

      @@Rjhs001 Good heavens, that voice has stayed with me for decades. The undercurrent of parochial disapproval is just perfect for that segment. Such talent!

    Hey Warren, I love all these videos and feel we really enjoy the same music. And I love what you say about Kate Bush as an artist. I too, have been telling people for years the Kate Bush has the greatest of all imaginations. Any smart alec artists who think what they've created is so wonderful should go and listen to Kate Bush's entire back catalogue before bragging too much about their self professed genius. She's wonderful.
