The use of the wah pedal on the lead guitar is absolutely genius! While people are insisting that each theme sounds the same due to its instrumentation, I encourage folks to time to listen closely with headphones and listen to the more subtle things like different keys, different instrument techniques to create different sounds, or any keyboard sounds (i.e, Bowser having an organ in his). As a musician and someone who studied music education I'm always about encouraging people to listen carefully to music and to try and contrast as well as compare. While I haven't played the previous two Strikers games growing up, (had an Xbox in my teens) I've seen clips of the games and understand each character had different genres of music as their themes. That's great! As for why that changed this time around, you'd have to ask Next Level Games for certain, but it could be likely a four/five piece rock instrumentation is a bit easier to record in the studio and was more cost-friendly this time around. Is it different, yes, but that doesn't mean the music is incapable of portraying different moods and characters! TLDR; Don't sleep on the music just because of the instrumentation. Use these TH-cam videos to seriously listen to the themes rather than the games because you might discover something. :)

I'm not saying one is better than the other, but this theme and the Charged theme both fit their depictions of Waluigi perfectly. While Charged is more frantic and fits the off-the-wall insane borderline slave driver Waluigi, this fits the (in comparison) far slicker, far more controlled, and more elegant Waluigi. Charged: Chaotic Evil. Battle League: Lawful Evil. Both evil, both great! Charged theme for BL Waluigi just feels wrong, and vice-versa.
People say they miss the Banjo. Sure, it was a fun theme for Waluigi, but I don't think it really would've fit Waluigi the way he's presented in this game. A crazy Banjo fits someone who makes weird faces, screams, and does all kinds of other erratic stuff; but in this one he's tossing around roses and strangely graceful in a way (at least when he's winning). You might say "Well this theme doesn't really fit that either" but I honestly kinda disagree. It feels somewhat show-offish and boisterous, with just a hint of the zany and mischievous, and I think that really suits him the best. In all honesty, I was never really a big fan of the crotch move.
Personally, I think this fits his more abrasive, mean-spirited nature behind his desire for fame and recognition, which goes hand-in-hand with his motif of spiky thorns I'd say.

I understand nearly anything negative one can say about battle league is Nintendo's fault, but I get the feeling character themes all feeling samey isn't one of those things when everyone has such great animations...
The unique music complements the unique animations. The samey music is pretty forgettable, while the distinct music helps express the identity of the character.
