I was about to type pretty much this, but also composes and produces this whole wall of sound XD Devin's recording challenge would be an interesting reaction video, although its 2-3 hours long. As would the quarantine concerts.
Saw the show at Royal Albert Hall. Had to travel to england to catch it but damn... That show was something else. Deadhead had me tearing up pretty good. Find the video and pause it at 5:10. Look to the right in the crowd. I'm the idiot holding the big inflatable hammer.
Fun times ahead indeed, with a new album on the horizon and a 20+ year discography to delve into... Personally I'd start with Addicted! or Ocean Machine and go from there. Happy listening :)
If you're into metal check out strapping young lad, it's some of devin's best stuff! Not that the devin townsend project isnt awesome as hell. Casualties of cool was pretty good too.
Ha, I actually recommended this on another video without knowing you actually did this one. Really glad you did. Devin is one of the greatest and most versatile vocalists around. There's some songs where he gets operatic high and his harsh vocals just have so much character to them. I've always admired how he's created his own unique sound and how effortless he makes it sound to switch back and forth. And of course as your noticed he's also an amazingly eccentric performer. Dude visibly loves what he does. I also recommend the RAH Deadhead performance
I love this, I just love Devin ... what I love most is that every vocal coach I’ve seen react to him points out how much in control he is and how it’s not forced ... he’s just a superstar ❤️
Alright, so the amazing thing about Devin is that he prefers to sing and play these 'fun' songs where he can just joke around and entertain the audience, which he LOVES to do on every single show he does (I've seen him do it, myself). But then there's the deeper and more serious side of him where he sings about death, suicide and depression. When he performs these songs you will not see him laugh, smile or joke around. You'll instead see him both mentally and physically hurting from it. When he played Funeral, Bastard and Death of Music in the Royal Albert Hall you can see goosebumps on his arms all the way through. I find it amazing how some musicians can still be so emotionally involved in their music after all those years.
Completely agree, although sadly I never had the stars line up just right for me to see DTP live so I just have yt vids etc. Doesn't look like I'll ever get the chance now, given DTP is on hiatus! Does anyone think they might get back together or have they gone the same way SYL went? (Please say yes, somebody!!) Obviously, I would love to see what he's doing now with the new LP, but my Devin Dream Team has to be DTP!
Been a fan of Devin since the Strapping days, I can't believe more vocal teachers haven't heard of him before because he is an absolute natural and I'm sure EVERYONE who does this kinda stuff would love to have it come to them as natural as Devin does. Guys a GENIUS
"Oh, he's a performer. I love it." Understatement of the century. Devin is the consummate performer in all he does, even interviews. Great videos! I just stumbled across your channel. I love your reactions and your open-mindedness to styles of music that may not be what you normally listen to. I've watched your reactions to Tool, Mike Patton, Dream Theater, Dio, and now Devin, and I have to say, you're more open to metal and heavy rock than most folks I run into.
I love how passionate you get about these performances. you are so genuine with your reactions, and I love these react videos you put together. keep up the great work!!
but seriously, the guy is outstanding, huge career. and get this, no vocal or musical training or education whatsoever. he just.... does that... and people are right about the Deadhead live suggestion. Subbed!
Also - I love that you're doing these videos. Of all the vocal teachers doing these videos, you're a breakthrough favourite of mine now. Plus it's fun watching someone else love the videos I was amazed by when I was a teen. You're spectacular at these videos, you're damn cute if that's not too much to say, and you look like you're having a ton of fun putting these together which makes it a blast to watch. :)
I love Dev’s music so much, I recently started watching your videos and it’s awesome to understand how he is doing this, and with such ease, it makes me realise even more why he’s my favourite artist, thanks for the good work and keep it coming. ♥️
Love that you did this one from Devin! It was the first one of his I'd ever heard too, and was just blown away by his control and what a "master of his craft" he is.
Nice one, always great to see people being exposed to old Devi. The look on your face when he first opens up. Really interesting to hear you break down what he’s doing, one of the keys to being a great teacher is making your field of expertise as relatable to as many people as possible, and done with such warmth and enthusiasm too. Great stuff.
Devin is amazing. Really glad to see you enjoy it. If you ever want to check out more Devy in the future, I recommend "The Death of Music" live at the Royal Albert Hall. It's a long one, but it's so powerful.
@@silirat Yeah i know that haha but it's always Deadhead or others after that. I like that one as well, but i feel specially for vocal coaches The death of Music is a good one since it relies so heavily on his voice.
@@lexievv Absolutely right about his voice in that, but the song is a really slow burn with the really amazing stuff near the end, which doesn't work well for reactors. They need the uber spread out evenly across the whole song so that there is always something to react to.
I'd recommend two tracks by Devin. Ih-Ah and it's polar opposite, Detox by his old band Strapping Yound Lad. Both done at the Royal Albery Hall. He's a master of any genre he wants to play and has produced some quality and stunning albums.
Man, if only strapping young lad got more love in the reaction videos. Vocal coaches would hear just how high this guy can go. Songs like Home Nuclions, and Shitstorm are insane vocally
I've always considered his screams to be an afterburner. You can tell he just pushes harder and tightens up and gets that "extra fuel" burning. One of the best and most underrated vocalists of our time.
Love seeing people discover Devin. Don't miss out on Deadhead from Royal Albert Hall. The Death of Music from the same show is great aswell, but probably more from a listening than a analytical perspective. He's also done other stuff in Casualites of Cool, which is... great. If you can, check out anything he's done with Anneke, they are grrreat together :)
Hi Beth - You haven't heard the unbelievable versatility and range of his voice. Deadhead live at Royal Albert Hall It brings tears to my eyes every time because it's so beautiful painful and very emotional Thanks for today
Devy is amazing. He was amazing in Strapping Young Lad and all the iterations of the Devin Townsend universe. Also, he's one hell of a nice guy. Very cool to meet and BS with.

I keep seeing people suggesting Devin Townsend- Deadhead Live at Royal Albert Hall, which is phenomenal, but if you want a hint at how vicious his vocals were when he was younger, I say check out Strapping Young Lad- Aftermath Live @ Download 2006. P.S., Beth, I just gotta say, you are BEAUTIFUL!
1:29 "He's keeping it forward"...100% spot on! So many "vocal coaches" reacting now and they never seem to point out the techniques behind distortion (or vocal fry) applications being done properly or not. DT is 100% spot on with his application of distortion and vocal fry and that is precisely why he has been able to maintain this level for 27yrs now (going back to Sex & Religion Album with Steve Vai when he was 19yrs old in '93).
I fully agree with you. He is THE genius, i never love an artist like that before. Discovering Devin 'fucking genius' Townsend is the best (musically speaking) thing that happened to me.
And like several others said: Check out his song Deadhead at the Royal Albert Hall. I cried like a little girl when I heard this version for the first time!
Wow Beth, thanks for bringing this to my attention.. I'd never heard of Devin.. Instant fan! May I make a suggestion? Temple of the Dog's 'Hungerstrike' Chris Cornell's controlled screaming at it's perfect best (Eddie Vedder also hitting it!). Also as somebody noted below, Myles Kennedy's acoustic 'Watch over you'.. beautiful. Subbed, keep em coming beth 👍
Nooooo waaaaaaaaaay. I just came home from work and I was thinking about how amazing it would be for you to react to this song, and there you are !!!! :3 Hope you like it.
Great reaction again Beth! First thing to pop into my mind is that he the male version of Floor Jansen, the Nightwish singer. Both seem to be able to do whatever they want with their voices.
If you have followed Devins life, he has been in some really bad places and come out the other side stronger every time. It has to be said though, when in his dark places he can be at his most creative. He is forever evolving and his drive is unmatched in my opinion. Thank you for this video it's great seeing it from a non-metal perspective. I think you can guess that I like his work 😅
Definitely have to give a recommendation for Royal Albert Hall performance of Deadhead!
THIS !!!!!

The tuba, really? That's the most impressive, considering he's a rock/metal musician.
