  • In this special festive edition of the Knowledge Tower, we take a scientific look at the legends behind Naming Day on the island city of Metru-Nui, where the Great Spirit Mata-Nui rides through the Chute system, giving out presents to all good Matoran. But how many presents would that be? And, could all those deliveries really be made in a single day? Watch and find out!

    Jingle bells, Tahu smells,
    Lewa laid an egg!
The Vahki mobile lost a wheel,
    And Makuta got away!

Glad to see that you managed to escape that Keerakh. Thanks for more scientific Bonkle lore! You're right that Ahkmou would get charred protodermis in his stocking.

Also, with the population of Metru Nui, I remember originally it was stated to be 1,000 in the Metru Nui tour guide mini site (with a population of 5000 vahki, which is insane). Statements have since increased the number to the thousands, and fans like that more. Its still way way smaller than real world cities. New York, which is probably the closest irl analog to Metru Nui, given that its an island divided into districts, has over 8 million people in it. But I must admit, I do kind of like the lore implications of the city having such a relatively small population compared to irl cities. Mainly because, human cities come about because large numbers of people chose to live in an area, the city was built around them. Metru Nui wasn't like that, the Matoran weren't living there just to live, they had a purpose there to be the workers in Mata Nui's brain. The population of New York would be way smaller if the only people that lived there were the ones who had jobs that kept the city functioning. The small population kinda subtly hints to that, that the Matoran are there for specific purpose. Maybe 1000 is too small, but still something in that range. Also small sizes make the villages on Mata Nui more intimate, which seems consistent with what we got.

I've always had the headcanon that Metru Nui's lodging was super extravagant. 1,000 people in somewhere the size of New York is a little ridiculous, but if every single person is living in a mansion it would make a lot more sense.

@@heyheyitsjae2475 I would probably say that public spaces and working areas were larger than necessary. Just look at the Onu-Metru Archives having those massive tunnel like constructions, wasting a lot of tunnel space. Ga-Metru is mostly parks and green space, so it has less building. Ko-Metru Knowledge Towers are tall, but are narrow and have very few spaces inside for people to be in. Po-Metru has large desert and canyon areas. The only fully filled in areas are Ta and Le-Metru, but they are important production and transportation centers, so most of the space is taken by industry and transportation hubs/vehicles. The City isnt as densely populated as it was assumed, which then makes the small population logical. Also the definition of what a city can depend on if its highly urbanized, as oppose to towns and villages, which are mostly agricultural. By population size, Metru-Nui is a decently sized village, but the urbanized nature makes it more of a small city than anything else.

The 1,000 figure has been retconned since by Greg in his answers and he now goes by hundreds of thousands iirc.

@@heyheyitsjae2475 The Metru Nui Matoran however canonically lived in small apartments often one room ones. check out the mini CDs for the Toa Metru and see the apartments :)

Lmao this is great! I love stuff like this. Also, imagine traveling through your own brain to give each of your brain cells a present to make them feel good. Is that what serotonin is?

Mata Nui could very well have several avatars, as well as conjure the gifts at the time of delivery.

The Vahki were actually created so Mata Nui could outsource Naming Day deliveries and focus on his hobbies, er I mean, mission.
