Tell me your thoughts on Nam Fong and where you will be getting your roast meats now.

Get roast meats at Asian Mix if in Makiki area. Expensive tho. Heard the same owners as Panda Cuisine that used to be on Keeaumoku.

Thanks for sharing your memories of Nam Fong. As the saying goes, "Don't be sad that it's over, be happy that it happened." That's a cool bag. 👍

The best! I ate there a bunch this summer not knowing they were closing.
Right across Cindy’s lei shop… another legendary Hawaii store.

So lucky you got to eat there multiple times this summer. I agree there are so many long time businesses on that street. Thank you so much for watching!

Thanks for sharing. I'm glad you could go there one more time before they closed. Sounds like you have some good memories of that place. I've never been there and don't have a place that I get roast meats haha. Is $26 a normal price for a whole chicken? No wonder I don't buy roast meats haha.

So sad. I used to work in town so I would pick up duck and roast pork at least once a month. As time went by and I no longer worked in town I visited Chinatown less and less. Like you mentioned parking is a hassle and expensive. When word of Nam Fong closing went around we made a trip to get duck, char siu and Roast pork. After seeing your chicken I wish I had gotten one of those too. Anyway Nam Fong will be missed. Other favorite places is Roast duck kitchen and Duk Lee in market city. Mahalo for your video. I will watch it I. The coming years to reminisce.

You should buy the restaurant and run it. Everyone will love you

Thank you so much for the kind words. I can tell you this. If I ever own a restaurant, I will hook all my viewers up. You all have my word on that. The least I can do for all my subscribers supporting me through this journey. Thank you so much for watching.

Juxtaposition of the intro music: chef's kiss! LOL. Appreciate the memorialization of a Chinatown institution. Iconic landmark.

Truth be told, about a year and half ago, I noticed a definite change in quality and flavor in all their meats…char siu, roast duck, roast pork, etc. The line use to be out the door. Not anymore the last year or so. My go to place is now The Char Sui House right down the street.

    • @AuthenticallyCharles
      @AuthenticallyCharles  ปีที่แล้ว +3

I will check out Char siu house next time I go for my roast meats. I actually remember the line you are talking about before at nam fong. Back in the day there was always a line. Thank you for watching!

Dark meat is winnahs! Duck Lee or Asian Mix will be my next choice when Nam Fong closes. I feel guilty for not patronizing their shop as much as the store next door, Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery, but I love sweets. Thank you for documenting this iconic shop.

I was so sad when I heard it was closing. I went there yesterday and the line was so long that I had to give up as the shop lady told us they didn't have much left. Shoyu chicken looks so good. I agree with you that I regret not coming there more often. Thanks for the farewell video for Nam Fong.

⁸we live in Pearl City and go to Roast Duck Kitchen or Oahu Market most of the time. Sorry to be losing another iconic place.

Roast duck kitchen. Very good choice! I will have to go back there to check them out again. I haven't been back there for a couple years. Hope you have a great weekend.

:) GO Charles! Sad to see another great place shutdown :( Hope someone buys the business to continue it. Vancouver's Chinatown is REALLY suffering from homeless and drug issues spilling over, and many businesses GONE, replaced with gentrified places and forcing older Chines out :( ALL the BEST, ENJOY and Cheers! :)

It was the prices for me: so cheap for what you'd get. I guess even if it was open they'd be charging more too, but still, this place was a Chinatown landmark. Chinatown's been looking a lot better recently, too. They cleaned up the streets, it's a much more inviting place to be these days.

Yes, yes , I'm going to miss there is so many places that's gone. Sad to say hard to find good Chinese food in Hawaii. When I find good place I do try to use their facilities as best I can. Sad my family who lives in the mainland like San Leandro. Alameda, and out shirts of San Francisco say they can find Chinese food better than here or maybe more abundance than here. They tell me wait till I visit them. Sad the old style way of way of Chinese food is so disappearing even their decor.

Nam Fong's roasted duck used to be the best. But about seven years before its closure, the food had already gone downhill.

Not trying to be nit picky but the title with "Martket" is spelled wrong 🙏. Also that's sad that places like these are closing in Chinatown. Here in Boston Massachusetts, Chinatown, old BBQ food places are slowly disappearing too 😢.
