Azshara was the Queen of the Kal'dorei, the Night Elves, before the Sundering. She was a powerful sorceress, her golden eyes signifying that she was destined for greatness (much like Illidan). She was also extremely full of herself, arrogant and narcissistic to an extreme, basking in the adoration of her people. Sargeras, the Lord of the Burning Legion, sought to use this to his advantage, promising her that she would rule by his side as Queen of the entire world, if only she would let him and his minions enter through portals into Azeroth. She was completely taken in by this false promise, seeing the demons that were sent as holy agents rather than the disgusting beasts they were. Ultimately, the War of the Ancients concluded with the Well of Eternity, situated at the foot of the Queen's palace, being imploded through use of the Demon Soul, destroying the portal through which Sargeras was attempting entry, and causing the Sundering, splitting the vast continent apart. Zin-Azshari, her capital, was sunk beneath the waves, tsunamis claiming it and the lives of her loyal subjects. It was here, sinking to her drowning fate, that she met N'Zoth, one of the Old Gods who had been defeated by the Titans ages ago and imprisoned beneath the surface of the world. As in the cinematic, you see that she negotiates a deal with him to free him by becoming allies, not slaves, and he uses his power to transform her and her people into the Naga, a fusion of serpent and Night Elf that allowed them to build their undersea empire of Nazjatar, unseen by the races on the surface, all in her name and by her will.
*failed to negotiate. And she earned some 10,000 years as a slave with delusions of grandeur for her hubris. And that was probably only because her little outburst entertained N'Zoth.
as much as i love her, i think its funny how people think she actually won the negotiation, i mean he was going to save her and give her power one way or the other so she can serve him, all she accomplished is that she can keep the title "queen" which to something close to a god literally means nothing.
So happy you all reacted! Azshara is my favorite lore character of all time. She sacrificed her people to the legion, and when their invasion failed, reality kind of set in . . . her deal saved what was left of her Highborne and her as well. If you react to any “in-game” cinematics there is the 8.2 Rise of Azshara trailer and End of the Eternal Palace. (The animation is just WoW in game-so nothing too special). However! What I'm struck by knowing the character's history is her guile, power, and above all, PRIDE. She is effectively bargaining with a real God (sort of, complicated) and she wins. Light of Lights indeed.
I loved this Warbringers short. If you like this style of animation, I also suggest (and would like to see you react to): Overwatch - Sigma animated short. I think these 2 are the most amazing from a pure storytelling perspective, with mystery and drama, while also awesome for people that don't know the games.
Remember Warlords of Draenor - there was a series too, called Lords of war - showing you some big orc leaders from the past (Like Garroshs and Thralls Father)
