    I'm living in a tent in Vermont winters. I insulated my El cheapo tent with moving blankets & radiant barrier material. I put grommets in them so they could be hung with carabiners. I see you want to keep it bright. Maybe just hang the moving blankets at night when you're asleep & the fire 🔥 dwindles? You seem to have found a daytime solution. Bubble wrap is doing well too. I'm loving your solution.

      Wow I had the same idea! Moving blankets are pretty good thickness too. And you can sew an attachment ring in the ceiling corners of the tents if they don't have them already. I have learned though to keep the moving blankets out of the sun for some types; the material degrades if left outside too often.

      I came here to say the same thing. I insulated my tent floor and roof the furniture blankets. I also added mylar blankets lined with throw blankets that I got for a total of (drumroll, please) $12.00 for all of them. Thank you Walmart clearance bin! Also never believe them when they say mylar thermal blankets are tear resistant. That is a bold faced lie, mine ripped like crazy.

    Ive been in my bell tent now for over a year ,if you put some raised sides on your bed and carpet them with stretch carpet also a headboard it will be much less draughty and your duvet doesn’t fall off the edge ,were in the uk so coldest so far has been minus ten degrees C we also installed a diesel heater as more efficient although still use the log burner occasionally .cheers magnus and Hayley

    Just a suggestion but if you hang the survival reflective blankets( cost 1-3$ at dollar store) behind the cotton and did the roof too you would see significant increase in heat efficiency or if you want to spend a bit more refletics ( kind of a silver reflective bubble wrap ) and for the ground lay the foam mats where you plan to walk without shoes. Just a few ideas

      Thanks for that idea! We’ve thought of something similar but don’t always have the supplies in town to purchase. We are definitely going to be updating our insulation for this coming winter

    You could have tried aluminum colored bubble wrap that they use to insulate basement walls in houses. It comes in different widths. Another option is the absorbent pads they use for oil spills. The come in a bundle and would need to be sewn together as they are only about 18X18". It would be quite a job. It is the same material as Thinsulate used in clothing. I know someone who insulated his home with it. Another thing you could do would be to get a larger stove. The first wood stove we used in out tent was too large and actually drove us out by producing too much heat. We had all the doors and windows open. We got a smaller stove the next year which was perfect. A separate tarp or fly over the tent will help but only if you create an air space in between. A bunch of kids swim noodles tied together in place would create an air pocket. Also consider propane lights which give off heat as well as light. Whatever you decide, make sure you have adequate ventilation. A tent too tightly sealed will use up all the oxygen from the wood stove and is as deadly as carbon monoxide poisoning. You may go to sleep at night and never wake up.

    Ancient castes originally hung blankets rugs and quilts on the walls as insulation. Eventually they became intricate tapestries telling stories

    You can try Sheep Wool. It’s a healthy, flame and moisture resistant material that looks beautiful and will let the light through the tent. It is more expensive but worth it, especially for such a small area like a tent. 👍

    How do often do you have to knock snow off the roof when it snows? I'm curious to hear thoughts on how people keep tents like this from tearing open from snow weight on the top when winter camping when it snows?

    Do you do anything to strengthen the tent against snow load? I've placed 2x4 uprights under the center ridge pole when I'm not there to clear snow...but I'm still worried as were supposed to get 2 feet of heavy wet snow Thursday! Trying to think of additional supports I can add...

      We are burning soft wood and so have shorter burn times. If I wake up at midnight and stuff the stove then there will be just a few embers in the box to start the morning fire. Hardwoods would solve this problem but they are not available here :)

    You know, your comment about not 'wanting' to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom... I could not help but consider that your little girls may sometimes wet the bed. I did, sadly, until I was 12. It wasn't a matter of laziness, but i paid that price/was accused of this anyway) I did not wake up or I did not fully wake up, I guess I was a deep sleeper. If I'm guessing correctly, I appreciate your common sense and respect because I can't help but wonder now that I'm older (I could be your mother), that the ribbing I took from my parents and siblings was traumatic and may have had something to do with why it continued on for me until I was 12. No one knew how horrible it was for me to deal with, but no one really cared except my mom. I was 12 when they invented a metal bed sheet to sleep on (yes, uncomfortable metal); it sounded an alarm, a very loud one the moment it got wet, so I had no choice but to wake up and change the sheets in the middle of the night. But it didn't take long for that problem to end either. Not certain it was that horrific contraption. But this was in a home not a tent. Hope this isn't your situation and that, if it is, you continue showing mercy to your lovely little girls.

    I live in northern Ontario and planning to build my own house but with a prospector tent I’m curious as if it can be good for full time living? And we’re did you get your tent I can’t seem to find much for made in Canada

    • @northernersadrift9868
      @northernersadrift9868  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it would be our dream to live in our prospect tent full-time this is definitely possible if you make the proper modifications before hand and are willing to sacrifice a few comforts.
      Our tent is from walltentshop.com and is actually based in Idaho I was a bit disappointed when the tent arrived to find out that it is imported from Asia. With that said you can call Tyler at the tent shop and he’ll talk for hours to get you everything you need to get going. The website is walltentshop.com. The phone number is, 1800-234-1150.
      They have a warehouse that ships from Canada so that you don’t have to pay duties and import fees.
