and Lorikeets are monomorphic the only way you can tell the sex of a lorikeet is by DNA

mumandtwins Hey. Didn't mean to offend - I think it's awesome and one of the funniest things I've seen. Hormones do strange things.
By the way - you can tell gender by the shape of the head (males have more squarish heads in profile, the females are more slender) and by the fact that they are mounting. Male lorikeets are often obsessed with people's hands for some reason. Almost every male lorikeet I have known has been weird about hands ... We had a rainbow who had a rubber duck he was "in love" with. Female lorikeets don't behave like this when in oestrous they kind of squat down and waggle their tail.

mumandtwins Once again I didn't mean to offend, I just thought it was funny because horny lorikeets are a very common ummm ... issue. When they're young its true that you can't tell the genders apart - but as they grow older it becomes pretty obvious, especially through their behaviour. There are also very subtle colour variations since of which are more visible in UV light. As a rule males tend to be better talkers and imitators while most girls will only talk by imitating another bird. Also, males tend to exhibit exactly this kind of sexualised behaviour before they even reach sexual maturity at the age of two and often start experimenting with inanimate objects of various kinds and for some reason I still don't understand they seem to be attracted to hands ... males and females also have different dances: for Instance in this vid they're both doing the boy dance and the second one probably didn't know that he's meant to wait for the girl to reciprocate and dance together before they do the wild thing. It looks like they're just extremely hormonal teenagers who haven't quite worked out what's going on with all the stuff they must be feeling.
