  • Across the Lamu archipelago, traditional boat building is a dying practice. Scarcity of wood & the growing use of unsustainable materials such as fiber glass are rapidly eroding the heritage of dhows.
As the world's first recycled plastic sailing dhow, Flipflopi has shown that you can take an abundance of plastic waste combine it with traditional skills and use it as a raw material for heritage boat building and so much more.
As part of our baseline study funded by the SMEP program, we have held several forums with traditional boat builders across the Lamu archipelago to share our learnings and understand the wider acceptability of waste plastics for boat building.
