      @@binanocht6110 It hasn't achieved momentum because not enough people have been affected. I've watched what you refer to all my life, but it really doesn't impact people - until, suddenly, it does.
      You'll note that the less wealthy have been getting it in the neck for decades but there's been no real discussion, or even acknowledgment of this in media. Of course not! Media and politics are owned by the 'comfortable middle' and depend on similar people to sit, watch and believe.
      The minute people from certain select groups get affected, then it's suddenly 'news'. The most obvious example is the rise in mortgage payments, that suddenly had every news source interested. No interest displayed to the plight of renters mind you, but that's the nature of our media, those that run it and those that work in it.
      When the number of those comfortable enough to believe the story is reduced enough, then the owners of our society have real issues. So I get the frustration, but we should recognise that we have to wait sometimes for the comfortable to get with the programme and that only happens when they themselves get impacted.

      I think we are already there with zero hours contracts, no security in the rental market, and rampant inflation of basics like food and fuel making it difficult for ordinary working people to live a basic life. In addition, this government claims to want to level up and have people on better paid jobs, but they refuse to allow wages to rise to the level needed and are planning on bringing in legislation to make strikes almost illegal. Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas, the rich people at the top of all political parties are not going to do anything about it, they will pretend or lie to us, but they create the rules that give all the money to them, allow them to offshore and evade taxes, while those of us on PAYE are forced to pay tax on everything.

    Thanks Gary for your podcast today. I agree 100%. I am a member of the ‘National Leasehold campaign ‘to abolish leasehold. The progress we have made with our Facebook page has been amazing, in the space of 5 years, we have with the help of ‘leasehold Knowledge Partnership’ got Ground rent abolished for new leases. Next step extend a lease for a cheap and fair price without needing to pay a surveyor and solicitor. The Government have committed to do that this year before this gov term ends. Next step replace the leasehold tenure with commonhold tenure, a fair system used in most of the world. There are a lot of people in NLC but there are the few who really push push push…. If we all did this pushing we can achieve whatever we want, and quicker, it’s that straightforward. leasehold has been an unfair system of tenure for 1000 yrs because there was so much money in extortion of the masses that needed leasehold to get a roof over their heads. So everyone out there, believe in your power! Take your power!

    I don't understand why people can't see how bad it is. I noticed going into work at 16 that I was dirt. I saw my Mum working for Loreal at Gatwick airport go from a good, respectable job to minimum wage. All the while they paid millions for celebrities to say the ironic phrase "because I am worth it". But the workers are worthless. By allowing a lot of immigrants from poor countries who the companies could pay less and abuse, it allowed commercial greed to get out of control. It has been happening for a long time and even though the minimum wage has gone up, it just means MORE people are on minumum wage. Then, the economy gives companies the excuse to say "we have to lay you off, no pay rise". Meanwhile, they make loads of profit and as the wages don't move and minimum goes up... They are now on minimum.
    The property prices are obvious and have been since the 80s and 90s.
    The very reason we are all mentally unwell is because our communities have been systematically broken down. Since 9/11 the media has made us afraid of each other. Technology has isolated our youth to their bedrooms because they are scared of being rejected by others.
    The biggest impact on now was the late 80s/early 90s when you had a massive decline in living standards as well as that poll tax. Poll tax was designed to separate and segregate society, funnily enough, it united people through common aggression. They will slip up again as is happening now. The US government are so arrogant that they think they can hide things in plain sight because people are stupid. Our government are doing the same. I don't believe that insulating Britain was a real, homegrown protest... It was designed to make people agree with the removal of protest rights.
    How anyone can think ANY of these politicians have any interest in doing the right thing for the people is beyond me. Independent parties can't win seats because seats are bought. That is why our voting system is rigged. Democrasy is dead and that was clearly shown in 2015.
    We can win this fight very quickly. We can organize public disobedience. There are more of us than the rich so in numbers, we can revolt. Look at Iran, people have protested for years but only when the oppression police slipped up and murdered someone. It is happening here and we are doing nothing, we need to force our government to obey us.
    However, if we take too long, people like myself will be called terrorists and locked up.

    Gary we are 100% behind you. Hate to say it but I agree that things will get a lot worse for people before they get better. And as people become more and more disaffected, they will search more for solutions and I think that's when you'll get a big explosion in subs on this channel (and hopefully more of a "movement"). Unfortunately you're right though - this is not a short term thing.
    I still think we should write to our MPs and in that way, do you think if you made a form letter for all of us to send, that it would help? Or is that possibly something for down the track? Meanwhile, I am doing all I can to spread the word.
    I've gotta say too, the way I think about government spending announcements has completely changed thanks to you. I mean, this £2bn "levelling up fund" they just announced isn't going to help us either. I always knew that on some level but now I can see the bigger picture and understand why. People need to question who is going to receive and benefit from that £2bn, and what the wider implications will be for us.
    Can't wait for the book either - I certainly will be buying it! 💛💛💛💛💛

    really interested by your whole narrative and analysis, i relate strongly on the matter of collapse, economic contraction or the unravelling of society, but much more from the perspective of understanding energy descent, climate impacts and ecological limitations, and the need for a totally new economic model. I am working on those ideas but so much of what you are saying really resonates, tackling climate means eradicating poverty and empowering the many, and escaping the elites and oligarchs, which feels a way off right now.

    *IF YOU DONT THINK THINGS CAN GET WORSE* watch the Time Team dig in Manchester for the first cotton mill
    They uncover the houses built for the mill workers. At first one family had a 2-storey house with cellar. Then they split it into 1 family per floor 3 families. Then they split it into one family per room - 6 families. In the ned there were 3 families in the cellar alone - 12 to 18 people in a cellar intended for coal. 50 people in a house built for 1 family - *CAPITALISM* IT CAN ALWAYS GET WORSE

    All the high and mighty words of Blighty gungho for the Ukraine conflict with Russia, and freedom and democracy! The very real fact of the exponential growth of social/financial inequality during the pandemic is enough evidence that we do not live in a democracy. So, knowing that the term 'growth' has been used and abused to become a descriptor for increased wealth/capital, the real growth requires a mirror first so the same mistakes are not happening by another name, and a map of where the country fits in to the global system. Big endeavour and requires huge effort in communicating about the 'system' of capitalism so that dialogue can form around alternatives with the evolution of a new vision for a democratic egalitarian society.

    You're spot on, the imbalance that needs to change is something that's been building momentum (in its current form) since the 60s, spearheaded by very smart people on behalf of the powerful.
    We can't expect that to be fixed overnight. We have to build comparable momentum or it will just be a flash in the pan movement.

  • @katypreen9588
    @katypreen9588 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It worries me that the public won't be on board in enough numbers until the middle class has already fallen. Those with comfortable lives have had their nice houses and modest luxuries for a long time, and they can't imagine things being different. They don't want to listen to those currently affected: the people the government and media has told them are feckless and lazy. They're happy to swallow what the media tells them, so it's good that you're making inroads on mainstream platforms. We need more voices from across the social spectrum echoing this, but especially people who are seen to have a bit of influence and expertise. Grassroots movements are important for building momentum, but our biased media easily dismisses such efforts as unserious and amateurish (and a bit too left-wing for their liking, even if they're apolitical). I hope the people hear and absorb the message before it's too late.

  • @dylanemeraldgrey
    @dylanemeraldgrey ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The left has had your message for decades. Just having a message and support for the messenger is not enough. Study capitalism, study the history of the left. The irony is that the left has the analysis, but now can't organize itself - let alone others. We have to organize ourselves, unify, and internationalize. That's not happening. We have to start by organizing to help others and build institutions. The only way to truly win is to build a movement that is strong enough to challenge capitalists for power. We either replace capitalism with a system that puts people above profit, or billions of us will be displaced, suffer, and die. Once climate feedback loops get going in earnest, there is no going back. Contrary to all of the corporate greenwashing, capitalists have put the pedal to metal. If they continue to increase global warming by exploiting the earth, they are guaranteeing mass death. Inequality bad, mass death, worse. If you want to help, organize people to help other people, build a gathering place, educate and build with the helpers and the people being helped. Build a model that can be reproduced. Get that going in every community, and build a movement with all of them. Real physical material help with education. Education alone is not enough.

Most persons in the working class don't read so they will miss your book Clear you have to create a nucleus then the shared process can move forward. I with you all the way, spreading the message within our communities and making this a part of everyday discourse is going to be essental and given how online we have become it might not seem as obvious as it should. But your Novara Media video did very well and I think collaborating with online figures to get more eyes and ears on what you are saying and what we need to do is essential. Getting on TV on the likes of the BBC is great but younger people like me are very online and not really aware of whats on TV nowdays. Reach is so important, like him or not given how big progressives like Hasan Piker has become in America demonstrates how there is an appetite for something different. I hope you will try to work with online figures political or otherwise to get this message to young people. Im sure you've already thought of all this though. Im 100% behind you and the movement we need to create. This is just the start.

    There's lots of things people can do rather than expect you to do this solely from here. This will be one part of the challenge.
    - join a Union, and force your Union to take your conditions seriously (take Garys message)
    - go to your ward forums, demand redistribution, set up community unions
    - I'm not going to pretend that the Labour party is all onside. But find the politicians that are (Zarah Sultana etc) and lean into supporting their work (collaborate with Gary etc)
    - organise, organise, organise. Gary may provide the analytical coherence in our economic agenda.

    The only way to bring about change is through government action. A government committed to providing public housing for all who require it, tariffs to protect certain industries, nationalised public transport and zero unemployment would be a start.This would require active membership of any party willing to undertake this plan.

    We can do something, we can save instead of spending on things we don’t need. Consumerism is making us poorer and businesses richer. We can grow some of our own food if we have a garden. We can buy second hand stuff. Good for the planet and sticks it to them where it hurts. Conscious spending, if enough of us do it, it makes a difference. We consume to make ourselves feel better, but it’s leading to a catastrophe in terms of inequality, we have to change habits and educate ourselves. Thank you Gary, look forward to the book (don’t buy it via Amazon peeps) 👏🙏
