    I have a custom 823 < M > nib. It is boringly perfect :
    Writes well and reliably, it is well balanced, well sized, the section feels comfortable, it never runs out of ink, the flow isn't dry nor too wet, it is not too heavy but does feel hefty enough, it isn't cheap but it is relatively affordable, cleaning is somewhat easy with a Twsbi tool, the nib is smooth but has just a hint of feedback so that you have a good control over it .
    The only thing I don't like about it, is its mundane cigar shape look, but that's splitting hairs. Excellent pen overall.

    I have recently started binge watching your videos and really enjoy them all--thank you! As for the pen, my Custom 823 is the pen I reach for most often, as it hits that magical sweet spot of fantastic feel in the hand and nib to paper, a fun filling system, flawless start and performance every time, and simple elegance. My pen is less fortunate than yours, as your handwriting puts mine to shame...

    • @alexchambers6208
      @alexchambers6208 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Maybe it's your experience with those other pens that allowed you to love this one so much? I only own two fountain pens: a Lamy Safari and Pilot Metropolitan. Part of me wants to do what you wish you had done and make the jump straight to the Custom 823, but I wonder if I would be able to appreciate it fully.

    • @DesignInNature
      @DesignInNature 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @alexchambers6208 I completely understand the sentiment.
      I started with a Lamy Safary. It's a great pen for students and people wanting to familiarize themselves with how a fountain pen works. (I really, really dislike the grip now after getting too used to normal grip pens).
      I then got the Pilot Metropolitan because not only did it feel more substantial in my hand, but it also fulfilled an aesthetic preference of mine for a more traditional cigar shape in fountain pens. Much better nib than the Safary, to my taste at least.
      I then moved on to my first big purchase, which was the Sailor 1911L.
      I was surprised at how light it was (much lighter than the Metropolitan), but at the time I didn't realize this was normal for most premium fountain pens because they are resin plastic rather than metal. But WOW, what a great upgrade was my first Sailor 1911L!
      I then got a Sailor Profesional Gear in a Fine Nib (my 1911L is a Medium nib for better writing experience), intending to use the Fine nib Pro gear for drawing.
      I then got a Platinum century 3776 which I still really like.
      And then finally got my Pilot Custom 823.
      But in hindsight, I wish I also would have just bought my Pilot Custom 823 and skipped all other premium pens I got after my Metropolitan. Don't get me wrong, I love my Sailor 1911L in Medium nib, almost as much as my Pilot Custom 823 also in Medium nib.
      The Sailor Medium makes a finer, drier line than the Pilot Medium which is a wetter writer.
      I seriously believe these 2 pens together are so versatile that they cover ALL of my needs. But if forced to keep only one, no hesitation I would keep only the Pilot 823.
      I think the Pilot Metropolitan is an all around perfect warm up before jumping straight to your "Grail" pen, whatever that may be for you.
      In my case, that has turned out to be my Pilot Custom 823.
      A close contender in my list was the Pelican M800. Also a wonderful writer, but almost double the price of the Pilot.
      I honestly can't think of any other pen that would serve me "Better" than the Pilot 823.
      Any other purchase I make in the future would just be a "Vanity" purchase. Because this pen is just a juicy, smooth writer with great feel and weight in the hand and is just beautiful to boot.
      To be honest, I may just keep saving in small amounts to get me a second Pilot custom 823 to keep as a spare in case mine is stolen or damaged.
      I would have saved myself lots of money if I had just gone straight for the Pilot 823 right after my Metropolitan. I'm a user of pens and not a collector. Therefore this pen has me completely satisfied to the point I no longer sit and pine after more expensive luxury pens anymore.
      I hope my experience is helpful.

    I have had this pen twice. I regretted the move to get rid of the pen and now have it again. My only concern was cleaning the pen and adding silicone grease to the plunger. I did not know you could disassemble the filling system. I will continue using this pen. I use a fine nib. Very smooth writing with minimal feedback.

    I did not like the way you filled the pen Placing the nib directly on the bottom of the glass bottle 😬

    • @strshooter7399
      @strshooter7399 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I couldn’t agree more. The ink bottle has the indentation, but that doesn’t mean you support the pen and the pushing of the plunger on the tip of the nib! Man, that’s so wrong! You wipe the top of the bottle clean. With one hand you hold & support the pen body, and keep the nib from touching the HARD glass bottom. Resting your hand on the top of the bottle, while supporting the pen keeps the nib from being forced into the bottom of the glass. In addition, that support hand helps keep the bottle of ink steady, and not being accidentally tipped over. Nibs on paper, not glass… .

    I have not experienced the Custom 823 yet. I do have a copy cat that is my go to pen. In that case, the original one (Pilot custom 823) would be a “1 pen collection” for me as well.

    Can’t agree more now, however it was never my favourite before. I have a ‘WA’ nib in the fully clear version, Japanese import to UK. The more I wrote with it and the nib got ‘written in’ so to speak, it grew on me more. The grip size is perfect for me. I was used to wider grips (MB 149 or Nakaya) and the 823 is perfect for me. The size, the grip shape, the grip length, everything is so well proportioned for my hand. This is now my #1 pen and with the huge ink capacity it is just epic. 🙂👍🏻 Then add some Tsuki yo or Kon Peki and it’s virtually unbeatable.

    (LOVE your videos, very happy to have found your channel sir) I own the Fine 823, it is VERY much an extra fine in my opinion, and it is the best example I have ever tried of any fountain pen. For anyone wondering about getting a fine, know it is REALLY FINE in comparison to the M nib, but if you're like me and love an extra fine point, I can't imagine a better tool. Also, in Fine the ink capacity last THAT much longer, which feels like ages. Well done Pilot indeed.

    Thank you for a great review of a great pen. I consider the 823 a better writer than any of my other "grail"evel pens. However, this is likely somewhat do to my writing style; I'm sure my writing style is not highly evolved. I also appreciate the straight forward "business" approach Pilot took with this pen. I would appreciate knowing which pens you consider as good or better writer as the 823.

    I don't think I'm @ 3 years' usage yet but I do have one of these in an EF nib and rank it as one of my favorite pens. I've reached the point in the FP "hobby" (aka, 'disease') where I can't keep them all inked up; some are in and out of regular rotation, some just in collection and I often wonder what I would replace should I lose most or all. My most common conclusion is that I could likely be happy with JUST the 823 -- it's that great! It's NEVER out of rotation or ink unless I'm cleaning it!

I much prefer any of my other Pilot pens including the E95s, custom 74, 912, Falcons and even Metros. I find the 823 uninspiring to use, difficult to clean and plain in comparison to Sailor or Platinum's offerings. I actually took the #15 nib out and put it in a Ranga pen. However, I love your reviews and always enjoy watching you write.

    I can tell that purchasing fountain pens can usually be an addiction. It might be helpful people throw this (piece of information) to the table for serious consideration. However, it is a rather health-safe addiction, except if you are wasting your full (sustainability-considerate) living cost in such purchases.

    I can’t decide between getting this pen or a pro gear realo. The realo has slip & seal and the custom 823 has a shut off valve, so ink evaporation (one of my main issues with fountain pens) isn’t a concern with them. The only thing I prefer of the sailor is that the overall design is less boring.

    My Pilot Custom 823 is my best writing pen, easily. But I'm frustrated that the piston needs to be greased every few months which makes me use the pen less. I'm considering getting a Pilot Custom 743 to get the same nib with easier cleaning. Do you have any experience with the 743?

      I’ve never had to pull mine apart either. Agree something’s not right. I once had to use ammonia based pen flush in another pen - pulled all of the silicone grease out of it - had to relube that one. Now I use cool water ONLY. Stay with the same colour family and you shouldn’t have a problem.

  • @jamesaritchie1

    I've owned two of them, and I think they write as well, or better, than any pen out there under the frive hundred dollar mark. But I had serious issues with both of mine The first had the rubber seal just fall apart, and the second had the just simply broke wjere the rod connects. I've seen a number of other 823s thaqt had similar issues.
    I use a pen a good deal more than the average user. Never less than five hours per day, and often double this, or more. But I've owned a number of pens thaqt stand up to this usage just fine. The 823 doesn't. I'm not at all fond of vacuum fillers because when I have serious issues, it's almost always with a vacuum filler. I know a vacuum filler can be made to stand up to such use because I do have a couple that have. But the 8823 is not one of them.
    It is a wonderful writer. Pilot pens usually are. But it is not a pen for those who use one pen almost exclusively, and who write as much as I do.
    I'll add this. Soft nibs are NOT made to flex, are NOT made to give line variation. A soft nib is, as Brian Goulet put it, a "shock absorber", designed to absorb the little twitches and jerks and tremors we all have during long writing sessions. For this, a soft nib is a miracle worker. With proper writing technique, which means using the whole arm to write, and letting the pen do the work, a soft nib can all but eliminate hand fatigue and cramping.
    But they are not made to flax, to give line variation, and the number one issue I have in repairing nibs comes from user trying to get line variation from soft nibs. The damage can happen in an instant, or it can take months, or even years, to manifest, but damage is being done each time you flex a non-flex nib. Very often, the user doesn't even realize the nib has been damaged. The pen may get slowly wetter and wetter, or it may just stop writing as well as it did when new. Hard starts may get mjore common, and skipping can also happen. It all depends on the particular nib and feed, on how often the nib is put under pressure, and on the user. But the damage is being done.
    What bothers me most is that the owner doesn't realize he or she is the cause, doesn't even realize damage has been done, but they get disenchanted and sell the pen. Then I have to repair the damage. or try to. It can't always be repaired.
    If you want line variation, buy a flex nib. Or a semi-flex nib, which is what most modern pen makers go with because it saves them a lot of money in return repairs.

      Hey thank you both for your thoughts about this pen. I have been thinking on getting a Pilot Custom 743. However I do not know which nib to take between the Fine, Soft Fine, Fine Medium and Soft Fine Medium, because I am worried and concerned that 1) the soft nib may be weaker or more fragile than the normal version. 2) That it may cause me problems while writting faster, compared with a stiff or normal nib. 3) it seems that if we compare the nib Fine with the Soft Fine, the soft fine seems darker or wider. The same with the Fine Medium and the Soft Fine Medium. The Soft Fine Medium seem darker and wider. 4) I may not need a soft nib since the nib for the Custom 743 is already made in Gold, so maybe it is going to be already very soft, and not comfortable to write with. I do not write with a lot a pressure, I would say, and I just want it for daily writing my thoughts as a writer. I do not care about flex or line variation, I just want a proper and reliable pen to last me long. I have been watching different reviews and comments, but it is all very diverse. I definitely don't want a Extra Fine nib because I have been writing with a old Sheaffer and I want to upgrade to something darker and more noticeable in my paper. And also I was considering a Soft Nib because sometimes this Sheaffer extra fine it is a bit scratchy and I feel like an obstacle at some point during my writing sessions. What do you guys recommend? The width I want is nothing beyond real 0.5mm (not lile with mechanical pencils that write narrower and then they get wider )and and not the 0.3mm from extra fine. I also read that Japanese nibs tend to run finer than western ones. However I have never have the opportunity to test other nibs apart from my Sheaffer. What do you guys think?

      Well, taking the 823 apart is pretty easy. It comes apart almost identical to the TWSBI, and while I'm not fond of paying three hundred dollars for a plastic pen, which is all resin is, the 823 is pretty darned strong. If you don't own a TWSBI, buy one. It's a cheap way to learn the basics of talking such pens apart.
      The 823 really is a good pen, and a great writer, but in all honesty it is not the the best, most reliable pen out there by far. It's value is simply in how well the nib writes, not in the pen body, and certainly not in reliability. Chances are yours won't break, and chances are you'll get a good nib, so as long as you like the way the pen looks and feels, you'll love it, and you CAN take it apart and put it back together. It's easy, and there are several videos that will take you through the process.
      This just isn't a pen for me. I don't like the looks, I don't like the very thin resin it uses, I don't like that it's a vacuum filler, which is just a gimmick to me. I don't even like how much ink it holds. i like to change inks now and then, and without wasting any. Too, many of my favorite inks don't sit well in a pen. They get darker and darker and darker as time goes on.
      This isn't a problem with my work pens because I use more than a milliliter per day, so I run my Bronze age and my Scribo Feel dry before ink can start to darke, and I can change the ink in both every few days. It is a problem in my "fun" pens that don't get used nearly as often or as much. For those pns, I prefer cartridge/converters. Thery hold more than enough ink for ordinary writing, they're far more reliable than most piston fillers, and certainly more than most vacuum fillers, there's almost nothing to break, and a good one will last for generations.
      I'm not against piston fillers or vacuum fillers, I just don't like cheap vacuum fillers because I've had them malfunction too often, and I've seen a lot of them that have malfunctioned for others. From my perspective, the 823 has a cheap vacuum filler system, even though it has a titanium rod.
      The 823 also has a higher percentage of poor nibs than any other pilot pen I've used. The nobs aren't horrible, ever, but many of them just aren't up to Pilot's usual standards of smoothness.
      But despite my problems, it is a good pen, and, when you get a smooth nib, a spectacular writer. It should last you for a very long time.

      @@jamesaritchie1 Thank you, James, for taking the time out for writing such a detailed reply ! I really appreciate your gesture.
      I, already, have taken the plunge and have bought one in and, luckily, the nib is smooth.
      All said and done, I console myself with the fact that it is, still, cheaper in price as compared to a Mont Blanc 149, which bugger goes for much more and, still, has a freakin' resin body ! 😂😂

    I am coming up close to two years of ownership for my 823. I am as careful as can be when using and cleaning but have started to notice the threads to the knob getting minor cracks. How can they be prevented? My TWSBI Vac mini is the same and am guessing it’s a Vac filler thing. They are still fully functional but want to keep it from cracking to the point where ink seeps out. Any tips?

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you're very lucky, or unless you keep the pen in just the right environment, all piston and vacuum fillers will burp sooner or later if you don't follow proper procedure when filling them. This may be your problem. First, the 699 doesn't give a full fill on the first attempt. I'm not sure I can explain this well, but after you fill the pen, , turn it upside down and push the plunger very slowly through the ink. Stop as soon as it just clears the ink. Put the nib back in the bottle, and push the piston the rest of the way down.
      This works with any pen that doesn't give full fills. Now wipe the nib complete free of ink. Even draw some ink out of the feed. This should help eliminate burping. But any pen, including the 823, can burn when it has too much air in the reservoir, so it's best to fill the pen when it get down to the halfway mark. . With a regular piston filler, it's smart to turn the piston and drop two or three or four drops on ink back into the bottle, and then wipe the nib thoroughly. I often force a touch of ink back into the bottle with a vac filler, but it's a little trickier than with a piston filler.
      It's funny. I've been using fountain pens for more than sixty years, and I've owned hundreds. Of them all, one of my top five pens is a vac filler, but I love it despite this, not because of it, and it's an expensive vac filler, and has never given me the slightest problem.
