I worked at a large music center in St. Louis when I was a youngin' in the early 80s. The JUNO 60 was easily our top seller at a list price of $1795. Man we sold a ton of these! I sold one to Geezer Butler (bass player in Black Sabbath). He was looking for a 'toy' to play with. Very pleasant guy. Nice rock & roll memory.
You mean to say that paying 1800 dollars for a new one isnt such a crazy price, considering they were 1800 dollar sin the 80s....
@@robertsteinberger5667 well no now theyre selling for double that....
As Jean Michele Jarre said in a famous quote, "synths like these are like the Stradivarius, timeless and priceless sounds." Gorgeous awesome sounds.
I actually had a Juno-6! You're going to cry when I tell you how I got it. I lived in upstate NY near the Quebec border in a very rural area. I was driving along a back road and came across a yard sale. I stopped because I noticed a keyboard set up. Figuring that it was probably garbage, I stopped anyway out of curiosity. Lo and behold, it was a Juno-6...for TEN DOLLARS!!! I shit you not, the old lady was just clearing out space after her last son moved out. It became part of my regular rig until I lost it in a bad flood. I really liked that board. Now, I have the Roland JU-06 boutique module and I have to say Roland did a good job on it!
wow so many emotions. 10 DOLLARS? WHAT THE F? and then the sadness of losing it in the flood ;-;
@@iamkeiju6756 - Yeah, I lost the Juno and a Korg DW8000. I have a nice rig now, though. I really like what Roland has done with the Boutique Series. I have the JU-06 and the D-05 that recreates the D-50. Along with a Juno DS, a Roland Gaia and a Yamaha MX61, I put together a pretty versatile rig.
Lost it? Or it got damaged? Because I’m sure it could be fixed if you still had it and it was just water damaged.
@@therestorationofdrwho1865 Probably not depending on what components were damaged. Until recently decent replacement parts for a lot of the main board and replacement voice chips were lost to time. Now thanks to a handful of small companies, most overseas, there's killer stuff that can breathe life back into these amazing beasts.
@@therestorationofdrwho1865 They were severely damaged not only by water but some physical damage as well. At the time I didn't really think about restoration, and as was mentioned here many of the components are lost to time. Besides, it was a lot easier at the time to simply create a new rig with the insurance money.
Impossible not to love this synth - so authentic, gritty, and gorgeous.
Roland engineers in the 80s must have been smoking that DMT. How could you otherwise come up with such a glorious instrument? It makes the sound of angels. It’s creation. Every function is necessary and nothing is superfluous. Pure perfection. (Except it doesn’t have MIDI).
im willing to bet that most engineers in any field perform at their best when not under the influence of psychedelic drugs
Wait I have to look at it again I thought it does have midi port on the back but it's an odd port
Wow, my mother bought this for me 35 years ago when I was 17 and still have it.I remember that times could choose analog or digital like a dx7.thanks remind me good memory.from Japan!
You have a lovely mum. My mum brought me a yamaha psr 40, and a seal synth :-)
Ηow much money did she spent buying Japanese made synth, such as Roland ??
@@andreaschristodoulou4274
Not sure but about USD2000 from that time. More than value for me still.
George Michael did Last Christmas on this synth. He played all instruments including the drum machine. All sounds on that song came from this machine.
I think "Last Christmas" is some kind of a plagiarism of "Reunited", by Peaches & Herb.
@lifeinsocialism Wrong. There is no DX7 on Last Christmas. The bells and pad patches are both from the Juno. The only external instruments besides Juno are an electric bass and sleigh bells.
A lot of these sound reminded me of the original Blade Runner Soundtrack from 1982
Ya it has a little bit the sound of the CS80 vangelis used for the soundtrack. :)
When I hear the Juno, so many songs pop into my head. Eurythmics and Kim Wilde especially.
This is actually one of the coolest things I've ever seen
It's one of the best synths I have ever bought and I still find it very inspiring. For me, the chorus FX and also the touch/action are what make it so exceptionally pleasant to play.
Had a Juno-6 for about 4 months now. The same synth but without the preset / memory section.
It's a great synth. Creates far bigger sounds than it should thanks to the sub-osc, pwm and chorus.
Definitely pick a 6 or 60 up if you see one.
Had a Juno 6 but before that as a youngster I used to go to Hessys in Liverpool on a Saturday and play on the Juno 60 for as long as I dared. I think that's what really got me into electronic music, such a fantastic bit of kit.
My brother had one of these & I eventually bought a 106. The HS-60 is also basically the same thing. But with built in speakers. Once you learn the basics they are very intuitive to use & you can just jam on them for ages, concocting sounds as you go.
I have the juno 6 ,picked it up in the early 90's when nobody wanted such a thing, still one of my favourites, I fitted the tubbutec midi conversion recently which gives you more adjustable functions including portamento, and a simple note sequencer added to the arpeggiator - brilliant!
TheHamstein I want to get the Tubbutec mod. I just have to internalize every function before I move on to The Next Level.
@@larsekman8244 It's an easy enough conversion, but I was slighty worried about altering my precious instrument, -drilling the holes for the midi connectors was the most nerve-wracking bit! All came out fine though and it's great being able to hook it up via midi.
Dr mix looks a bit different today, I think he changed his hair.
This is not the main Dr mix dude. Lol. I think its one of his other colleagues
@@EphemeralProductions That is impossible. Listen very very closely to his accent, it is exactly the same. Ergo...
I love the sounds of this synthesizer. It's a real pleasure to listen !
I bought a Juno-60 from my friends dad in the mid 80's for $150 bucks cause he left it out in the rain and one of the white keys was broken! Such a steal but I earned it with my fast food job. Worked okay but had a short somewhere in it. Always tinkered around on it but finally sold it after 30 years to a guy in Australia for $750... I really had something special and regret letting it go. Love your channel!!
A good friend of mine had one of these and the best I could describe the sound... effortless. Open-throated, relaxed with no hint of tension that so many other synths had at the time. Sort of like a Hammond organ in the sense that it is hard to know exactly what in the sound made it that way.
Thanks for a great demo. It reminded me why the Juno 60 (and 106) are so great. Simple but powerful.
I preferred my Roland Jupiter 6 because it could do exactly the same things as the Juno 60, but had a split, so I could play the arpeggio base on lower end and strings on upper end....
One of my favourite polysynths...recently made a vid on combining it with roland tape eche nils frahm style..incredible possibilities and fresh sounding. Thanks for your competent posting.
No substitute for the real sound of a classic synth.
I have one and its insane. The chorus is what I live for, and its so easy to learn on. 10/10 recommendation.
There's nothing like the old classics
the juno 60 is simply magical and why so many people are not happy with roland for making a lot of gadgets now instead of re releasing a faithful build of the iconic classics in full scale
thats because kids want these gadgets.thats where the money came from.
we real "musicians" need to buy old second hand gear for lots of money.
@@LtdBoomer Also, in some cases, the original oscillator & filter chips are no longer available.
@@derekbaker3279 re-engineering is possible fans and geeks do it all the time for 106 voice chips
The Sweet Dreams (are made of this) riff wasn't created with a Juno-60, the whole song was actually recorded with a Oberheim OB-X synthesizer.
that Sintzer remember me the Tame Impala. very very nice
there's nothing like playing a Juno-60... best synth ever for playability and fun!
they are worth every penny beautiful synths
That sweet dreams intro is fire!
What an amazingly gorgeous synth!
So this is the machine that created my childhood soundtrack.
It's beautiful to hear new age.
I love the Juno 60. It's in almost all my tunes. You did a really great job showing people how to use it. I really enjoyed it. Keep up the great work. Take care, Sam.
I love my Juno 60, one of the few synths i ve kept hold of, fantastic sound.
Great!! I known "You love JUNO-60". I'm JUNO-60 user too!! since 1981.
can i please touch you, as it wasn't released until halfway 1982. If i remember correctly even later, as i saw it in the stores after my summer holiday.
Gosh Doctor Mix you make this keyboard sing like an angel ☺️
I think Enya used this extensively at the beginning of her career. You can hear it on the album The Celts
It was used on Caribbean Blue, as shown here. th-cam.com/video/umdgKw9un7I/w-d-xo.html
Such an amazing sounding machine
Wow,this synth sounds AMAZING!!!
"what really defines this synthesizer is the sound" I wonder why
The key for making these sounds work is adding an external effects unit. It makes your patches....3D
One of the best syth ! In my opinion better than 106. Lord forgive me for my syths !
3:06 Jackpot!
I could watch this video forever!! I love those vintage synths!
I just got my brains blown, I need one, now
If Behringer happens to make a good Juno-60 clone, I'm gonna be all over it. Someone GAVE me a Juno 60 along with the sequencer module a long time ago, and while I enjoyed playing with it, I just didn't explore it enough and ended up selling it for some quick cash. Decent money at the time but nowhere near what a perfectly working Juno 60 in good condition goes for these days.
I agree that it would be sweet if Behringer did a 60 clone but I must say DM12 as a module is stellar and I want one despite the fact that it may not last a decade; I may not either 🤣
Those sequencers are IT!
Still got a Juno 60 in great condition stored away. Will sell it one day for a lot of money no doubt!
Get it used, seriously. My friend had all sorts of issues when brought out of storage. Took mine 1 week to sort the faders and pots after the guy I bought it from stored it.
Roland Juno 60, Jupiter 8, D 50 and the Yamaha DX7 was the 80s covered.
I have this keyboard! Great bass can be programmed on this bad boy.😎
Wow lucky. Any vintage synth seems to go for way too much nowadays.
Cool! Brilliant musician, great presentation 4:16
Best one of these vids so far.
my Juno 60 (@1983) is still going strong!
correct....it has NEVER seen a repair shop.....i found it to be VERY road worthy.
That is truly amazing, and says a lot about how they built these things back in the day. Thanks for the reply!
nothing "contact spray" won't fix. (just spray some of it in the base of the knob and give it 5 min. Then turn the knob like 10 x really strong without the machine being on and voila it works again without the scratching sound) Good luck !!
I love that thing 👀 i wish it wasn't that expensive, what an legendary synth!
DAFT PUNK ALSO USED THIS KEYBOARD FOR THEIR MUSIC FOR THE MOVIE TRON LEGACY.. CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON SOME TRON LEGACY TRACKS BY PLAYING THEM ON THIS KEYBOARD
Samridh Kharbat They also used the ms20 HEAVILY for that soundtrack so don't buy one thinking all of that is possible with just the Juno. Some of the movies tracks were made only with the ms20. As was a lot of their studio albums tracks.
Sounds like Giorgio Moroder music! Very awesome! I do not play any type of keyboard but they fascinate me just the same. Thank you for posting these videos - I really enjoy them.
So glad not to have so a damaged Version of the Juno 60, but sound is sound ;)
Of course it sounds good and is an iconic synth. However, its contemporary rival, the Korg PolySix, was even better due to its VCO and FX section.
Как же шикарно они звучат!
Being surrounded by a Juno 60, a DX7, a D50 & an M1 is.........💥
Classic. The best.
Thanks for making this Dom, Cannot wait to try the new ju06a
Pre-ordered
I still have my Juno 6 with this famous double chorus
Still have my Juno-6 since 1984. A sneaky little thing about the transpose button, if you hold a chord and press transpose it will play that chord via one key but only one octave. I installed a little toggle switch in parallel with the transpose switch; hold a chord, flip the switch and it's locked on.
Can you make a 2 hour long version of this? :)
Amazing towards the end I was thinking huh, shades of 303.
I wanted one of them. But years ago I was lucky enough to pickup a Roland System 100 model 101 with the secondary unit and the sequencer to go with it. Another thing I'll have to add to the mix when I get all my music equipment set back up :-)
Whats the worth of the juno60 today? ...i will not sale, only know how many it cost on vintage marked today ;) many thanks
It's so beautiful
Now I want to find one and just play with it. Being a music producer, this is a great tool to use.
First, I resisted it because of its DCO technology. Then, I resisted it because of its single-DC9-per-voice architecture. Now, I simply don’t feel I need one because I’ve got a JX8P. I still enjoy what people have done with it though.
Brilliant demo, thank you!
I have the vst version from Roland cloud and I love it
I wish I could use this today. The sounds are great from this synth
1:06 is the boat horn mode xD
This was use in take on me keyboard intro synth
Around 2:05 when your press that chorus , it immediately sounds like it comes from outside my headphones !
Tegu Audio Line (TAL) makes a really good freeware VST software synth that does an excellent job emulating the Juno-60 called the TAL U-No 62. It was the first VST synth I acquired & used when I started getting serious about making electronic music about 3 years ago. One of the first things I did when messing around with the (virtual) knobs was come up with a pretty passable sound for a Doctor Who bassline... Just need to get enough cabbage together to get that officially licensed Moog VST so I can do the melody, and I'll finally be able to finish that project, lol.
Fantástico! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Good synth and still is.
I bought my juno 60 in the early mid 90s for $275 at a local music store, It now lists for $2,500... yes I still have it, in fact I took it back to the same store for repairs about 3 months ago, put acouple new sliders in as well as a few switches
Great video. Great synth. Great music being played. Brings back happy memories. Thanks! :)
5:10 sounded amazing
correct me if I'm wrong but didn't shukey levy used to use this synth in the early days of his career? (specificly when doing the music for saturday supercade) a sound similar to the "funny cat" patch was promenently in the music for the donkey kong segments.
I wanted one of these so bad back when. I went in content on buying the 60 but the JX3P had just came out and I bought that instead. I still have it, but..deep down inside, I still want a 60. I will not pay the ridiculously high prices they ask now. I won’t do it!
I have a Juno 106. Its great though it needs some circuit repairs. =/
I'd like to have this synth, it sounds so... Eighties...
@Dystopia Plus...I had a Juno 106 in the 80's and sold it in the 90's (big mistake !). I went into a Sam Ash recently and they wanted $1000 for one!...I miss my Juno !
I found mine in my basement from the 80s in fact it hasn’t been touched for 32 years!
@@xoxxobob61 Crap if I found one at a Sam Ash for $1000 I'd snag it in a heartbeat :(
@@neonether The Juno 106 is overrated. The Deepmind 12 can sound as a Juno, there is a comparison video here on TH-cam. I have them both I prefer the DP12 over the Juno.
@@padmad3k63 Yeah, I mean why would they be on thousands of hit records used by major artists for decades? Not to mention be some of Roland's most successful synths? Classics? Pssh.
