Simulation of V2X based Road Hazard Warning system using SUMO

The deployment of connected vehicles is highly anticipated, and likely to become a reality in the near future. There is an enormous potential for connected technologies to improve safety, which can only be realized if communication capabilities are paired with smart strategies to manage traffic, complementing vehicle sensors and navigation technologies. In this video, we illustrate the functioning of a V2X (Vehicle-to-everything communication) based Road Hazard Warning (RHW) system. The scenario of a freeway accident with and without the presence of RHW is simulated.
In the scenario where V2X is enabled (above), once the hazard has occurred, all vehicles are made aware of the hazard location. The lane on which the hazard has occurred is called the hazard lane. Vehicles not in the hazard lane are considered safe (green). Vehicles in the hazard lane actively tries to change lane away from the hazard lane. Vehicles immediately behind the crashing vehicle receive an Electronic Emergency Brake Light (EEBL) Warning. This warning notifies drivers that there is a crash ahead and therefore should slow down.
The simulations were done using the microscopic traffic simulator - SUMO by a team of researchers at the University of Texas at Austin. The implementation details, assumptions and further analysis is included in a technical paper that can be found at:
