A man I know stood in a big box drug store watching a homeless man beg them to sell him socks. He pulled up his pant legs and showed them he had bare feet in tattered sneakers. Quebec was going through a cold snap at the time. Daytime highs were -20C. Overnight lows were below -35. They said they couldn't. Meanwhile, candy bars and bubble gum were available for purchase. They also had a curfew in place. No nonessential people were allowed out overnight. As someone who gladly voted for him twice, I wouldn't say he was perfect. I had a beef with him on a few issues, but for the most part, I think he was pretty clearly the best US president since at least first term Reagan, and Trump was better still. Maybe even the best since Eisenhower. Quebec was going through a cold snap at the time. Daytime highs were -20C. Overnight lows were below -35. They said they couldn't. Meanwhile, candy bars and bubble gum were available for purchase.
They also had a curfew in place. No nonessential people were allowed out overnight. For some fucked up reason, no one thought to designate homeless shelters as essential services, so they'd just boot all their residents out into the street overnight. Taking issue with these kinds of measures means you are "denying" the pandemic. I'm blown away by the lack of nuance involved.
The people I hang around with know the virus is serious, but we disagree with the draconian curtailment of our freedoms. I've had COVID. I shouldn't be forced to wear a mask. Especially since the long term effects of having had COVID make them intolerable. As someone who can't catch it or spread it, I should be able to visit anyone, whether they're vaccinated or not.
