Whaaaat, you actually helped me so much at 1:18. I have been trying to create a collection of lenses myself for quite some time. I create lenses based upon the original lens patent information using CAD software, and then export them into blender as curves that I can apply modifiers to. They have never ever once worked. I had tried increasing the max light bounces, Increasing the transparent bounces, messing with normals, adjusting scaling, and so much more. But nothing ever worked. After about a year of trying different fixes, I gave up. But changing just these three values worked flawlessly! My collection of lenses I have created finally work thanks to you. You are a lifesaver man.✌
yeah for sure - the render time is definitely the disadvantage of this method - on the faster lenses you can expect about 2-3x the render time - but some others are slower - and take more samples f.e. the retro rocket 35mm and the sharp 2x are fast - as in 2-3x the render time
Is this any good with animations? The issue with zirc's method is that you just have to brute force samples and long render times if your not doing render passes (and even then you might be waiting a week or longer for short animations). but its always really good for stills and not really that hard to setup (even for a beginner/medium experience user like me). its also really easy to customize what you want. so my worry about even buying this would be that i cant adjust the lenses manually and that its just the same render times that ive been dealing with. note: i did notice the paper plane animation but my concern is still that it was long render times.
Hey there! yeah I mean the render time is for sure a disadvantage of these lenses - but - with denoising it's not that bad, - I would say you can expect about 2-3x the render time - but this is an estimate also - this does change based on what lens you use - the retro rocket 35mm, and sharp 2x render relatively fast - while something like the helium 420 renders quite a bit slower (needs more samples) I just used sheepit www.sheepit-renderfarm.com - to render the animations in this video - sheepit is actually really good now - ever since they increased their file size limit to 2048MB

Thanks for this Cool Overview of the Lenses!!! 👍😉
Thanks, very concise and informative!
Edin you legend
this is very convincing, but that should add quite some time in the render.
