  • Simon and Matt set up and discuss the DD Hammocks Superlight A-Frame Mesh Tent, along with a Superlight Tarp for rain protection.
    The DD Superlight A-Frame Mesh Tent is, fundamentally, a waterproof groundsheet with an integrated bug net. It uses two extendable hiking poles to erect, rather than the additional bulk of carrying separate tent poles.
    For bug magnets (like Simon) it is an ideal solution to provide maximum immersion in the great outdoors, without being eaten alive by insects. It also provides a PERFECT free-standing structure over which to rig a tarp shelter.
    Here's a handy link to the snap-lock style ultralight hiking poles Simon references in this video: amzn.to/2ofrhQM
    Here's a handy link to the Superlight A-Frame Tent page on the DD Hammocks website: www.ddhammocks....
    Please note that at least one new tent offering from DD Hammocks has been released since this video was produced. Information was accurate at the time of recording.
    As always with videos featuring specific equipment, I want to be absolutely clear that this video is NOT a paid endorsement of DD Hammocks or its products. DD Hammocks have not been involved in the production of this video, and the products demonstrated were purchased by Simon with his own money. No payment (in any form) has been or will be made in exchange for the production of this video.

    Thanks for the thorough review. I just purchased this tent from DD today. Going to use it in place of my DD Hammock in by bug-out bag. Take care.

    This is a great tent, and does come with a separate purchase a rain fly, a tent i see with multiple set-up configurations such as using two tri- pods on either sides with the one pole too the tri-pod facing outwards now giving you three wide openings , or set this tent up using a ridge line which will give you the same three wide opening space without a pole in the middle of the side doors to run into. Overall a very good tent.

    I like how this set-up goes. Well demonstrated. I Personale think a longer tarp would be better . Thanks for this demonstration.

    Great review of the DD mesh tent. I know I’ve been very pleased with the hammock from DD (the XL as I’m 1.97 m) although I’ve changed part of the suspension for Whoopi slings. DD makes very good gear at reasonable prices. Their 3 by 3 tarpaulin is also a good product.

    Looks like it would be more preferable to have a slightly lager tarp, like 3x4m for example, since the wind direction could change and therefore the rain could hit the other end, right?

    I’m pretty interested in buying a dd tarp but I’m concerned with ticks and such what are the benifits with having a bug net with the tarp instead of just a smaller 2 person tent

    All these bug net tents have tie backs, that's a bit silly in my book. The doors should only be opened for the absolute minimum time possible !

    interesting vid, tent looks good and great to see with a tarp. It is one I have been considering. Do you happen to have the DD SuperLight - Pathfinder - Mesh Tent? I'm not sure if it's new as I don't remember seeing it last time I looked on DD's site. It looks pretty perfect for me, but it would be nice to see it with a 3x3 tarp before I bought one. Thanks for sharing.

    • @PackedToLive
      @PackedToLive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi buddy,
      At this moment in time, I do not have the Pathfinder tent. However, I will have one before the end of the week as I've just ordered it (only discovered it existed yesterday after editing this video).
      Now, looking at its dimensions, I can see that the DD 3x3 (or the Superlight 3x3) will definitely provide ample rain coverage for it.
      Since I'm doing a 4 night camping trip this coming weekend (and assuming it arrives before then, which it should) I'll be sure to do a video showing at least the Superlight 3x3 tarp pitched over it (and possibly a video attempting to rig the Superlight Small, BASHA-sized, tarp over it as well)
      I bought the A-Frame as it looked like a good option for two people camping. Since shooting this video back in December, I've used it quite a few times... including LAST weekend up in the Peterborough area with my buddy Bob (from Bob's Bushcraft here on TH-cam).
      It's DEFINITELY large enough for two grown men and their kit.
      Understandably, you're looking at the Pathfinder because it's smaller and lighter, for one man only. I do a LOT of solo camps myself, so soon as I saw it I figured "yup, should definitely give one of these a go".
      Ordered today, should be here in the next day or so, will test it out on my extended weekend trip, and post a video next week (probably on Tuesday or Wednesday).

      @PackedToLive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've subscribed to you, by the way. I noticed you're starting out on TH-cam, your videos look interesting (will give all three a full viewing when I get home) :)

      @AlbionCamping 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the thoughtful reply and sub. Yeah the pathfinder looks perfect to use with my 3x3MC tarp for a nice stealth camp. At the mo its a toss up between the pf and the ionosphere. I look forward to seeing yours set up. Have a good weekend, and good luck that it comes in time.

    • @PackedToLive
      @PackedToLive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DD are usually extremely good with their shipping times. I imagine it'll arrive tomorrow while I'm at work, then I'll have to go collect it from the post office some 25 miles away on Wednesday before I head out.

    • @PackedToLive
      @PackedToLive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just picked up the Pathfinder mesh tent from the post office.
      Will shoot the video this weekend, and aim to have it uploaded early next week.
      Got to say, it's impressively compact and light in its pack. ~560g all-in (including everything that comes with it, I mean)
      At least this time I'll be setting it up with snap-lock hiking poles instead of the annoying twist-lock ones I've been using up to now :)

  • @Pauls2025
    @Pauls2025 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for the thorough review. Ive just found your channel and have subscribed. I have the DD 4x4 tarp and i am assuming it would work just as well with this, if not better? Kind regards, Paul

    • @PackedToLive
      @PackedToLive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it will work well... though of course the amount of clear ground around your pitch will need to be a bit larger (to accommodate the larger tarp).
      The 4x4 will also provide COMPLETE protection from high winds (where a 3x3 could allow wind-blown rain to blow in if you either pitch in the wrong direction in bad weather, or if the wind direction were to shift after you've pitched).
      Also, thanks for the sub, the compliment and the question :)

    Hi, do you plan on doing a review on the DD Superlight A-frame tent also (as you did on the pyramid tent)? I already own the A-farm mesh tent and would be interested in your opinion. Greetings from Germany.

    • @PackedToLive
      @PackedToLive  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would, but they've apparently changed the design of both the mesh and outer since I shot this video, and - from what I've been told - it no longer allows you to insert the poles handle-up as seen in this video. This means the outer would not work with this first-generation inner, assuming what I've been told is true.
      I may have to put an order in for both a new inner AND the new outer. If that happens, I'll certainly shoot a video of the combination.

  • @Jikan04
    @Jikan04 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    argh! I just can't decide which one to go for, this or the pyramid. what's letting this one down for me is that there isn't a door on the opposite side to the main door.

    • @PackedToLive
      @PackedToLive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To be fair, this has doors on THREE out of four sides. The Pyramid only has ONE door.
      Also, this one is longer than the Pyramid.
      Honestly, I prefer the A-Frame myself... with a tarp over for rain cover :)

    • @Jikan04
      @Jikan04 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Packed To Live yeah, that's what I dislike about the pyramid, once to outer is on no you can't see all around. But, I'm 6 ft and pyramid is taller than the a frame. ah, dilemmas

    • @PackedToLive
      @PackedToLive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not taller. Both tents are 135cm... just the Pyramid is ONLY 135cm at the CENTER (where the pole is) while the A-Frame is 135cm right along the ridge.

    • @Jikan04
      @Jikan04 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Packed To Live oh, I thought pyramid was taller. May have just made my mind up. Thanks

    Wilderness Innovation makes a WAY better product. Waterproof top, surrounded my netting. 6 feet tall, 10 feet long, 4 feet wide. Has special slits so you can hang your hammock in it. Too bad that company is not so popular ad DD because he discontinued it. I got the last one. They make better tarps, better poncho systems ( they convert into hammocks, have a liner that snaps into it that turns into a coat, underquilt, top quilt ) better everything than DD. You all missed out! Best bushcraft system he makes on the planet!
