      @@guajon1 Well, if that is the choice of Puertoricans, then I respect it, they should decide. But I feel that staying a territory of the US (neither independent nor an US state) is detrimental to the Island. I will also say this: most countries in the world have been invaded at one point in history, which almost always results in a population that has multiple identities. If Puerto Rico were to become independent, some would feel their american side is taken away. In theory, the US constitution allows a state to have its own language and culture. Plus, look at other islands in the West Indies, most are "americanized" anyway. I'm not sure independence would make it easier for you to preserve your identity and culture. What do you think?

      I think the bigger question is, is that debt going to get forgiven now? It's all well and fun to speculate but in reality, Hamilton's not here. And Puerto Rico is in desperate need of it now.

      Interesting how you can make a career off of Hamilton without gleaning some lessons from his central role, namely how he got the U.S out of debt.
      It’s not like PR owes that money to the U.S government, they went around selling bonds for 40 years to bankers and investors and never paid them back.
      Even if it was forgiven nobody would ever invest in the country given that their word means nothing, so what then? Debt forgiveness and then loans to rebuild?
      Again Hamilton has a lot to say about situations like this that is very insightful.

      Of course, I’m just pointing out the irony of celebrating him without realizing why he should be celebrated, namely the work he did for getting the U.S out of debt.
      The reason you study the past is to learn from it.

    • @tadious9415
      @tadious9415 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      One of Hamilton's biggest accomplishments was to have the federal government assume the state's debts to allow everyone to pay them together and for the states that were struggling to recover and then build credit for the US. I don't see why he'd see the need for anything different when it came to Puerto Rico, maybe not forgive it but have the US assume their debt so they can focus on recovery and not have that over them. But that's an important point about learning for the past.

Otherwise we're just facilitating an unhealthy addiction to government aid, and that will destroy Puerto Rico entirely. Puerto Rico's biggest fault is their indecisiveness. That's why it's taking them so long to recover. Here's hoping Hamilton's resolve in the face of his island's hurricane will inspire them.

      rene tobar ........PR is not asking for a hand out .......they simply want to restructure their debt like detroit did in filing for chapter 9 bankruptcy. If I'm not mistaken detroit is coming back .....so why can't puerto rico do the same ?? Not to mention in necessary JONES ACT that doubles if not triples the tax on inport/exported good from the ports of puerto rico. It's jacking up prices on goods in puerto rico to a people that are already not making any kind of real money.
      Imaging detroit in their past financial condition ....except that everything they receive or ship out gets taxed 2 to three times the amount from every other state ??? A 2 liter soda costing $2 dollars in boston .......in detroit ....would be paying $ 7 to $ 8 dollars . Sounds fair to you ????? A bit exaggerated ....but just trying to make you see how just a portion of this debt came about. Puerto Rico has capablilites to pay into the treasury . Back in 2016 they paid 3.5 billion dollars toward the treasury.
      It's a bunch of little stupid laws , acts and crooked business practices done by both local and US federal government that is a major reason why puerto rico's debt is so huge that most folks do not know about. What's sad is that no one wants to help . All it takes is for someone to simply eliminate the jones act......and allow PR to file for bankruptcy so that they can restructure their debt .......not eliminate it.
