I'm a bit of a knife 'collector' (any knives) but I use your philosophy and take a sharpened half dozen for all the tasks. Skinning really takes edges off. I just bought that Eveready headlamp too (4 actually - they have multipack deals) and am very impressed! Take a good look at the MOLLE 'medium' ruck - 49L external frame (approx. 18 inch H x 12 inch W lightweight horseshoe shaped plastic frame), 60 lb. max load , deep main bag, two outside large zippered pouches, PALS on both sides of pack and on the lower of the 2 outside pouches - a pretty damn good suspension system of padded shoulder straps and hip belt. Significantly larger than Army 3-Day 'assault packs' (and a frame) but significantly smaller than the MOLLE II full size ruck. 👍
