This is an awesome project. When my '89 XJ motor (I6 4.0L) finally wears out (ONLY has 235K miles now) I think I will do but with the 5.3 LS. Keep up the good work!
Nice work fitting, I prefer a ball flange at the headers and again from cat to muffler then I use a band clamp for the tailpipe to muffler , allows me to easily remove everything
Had some Magnaflow resonators alone on my 95 Buick Roadmaster LT1 along with mid length Kooks, Mag x-pipe and high flow cats. Sounded damn awesome like a newer vette
I used the same design of Flowmaster y pipe on my Silverado when converting it to a single 4" exhaust. I think it's one of the more efficient designs. Others seem to neck down at the merge before expanding to the larger size. It's always satisfying to watch you weld together a custom exhaust. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! I remember reading a magazine test many years ago, and they had said the Flowmaster Y pipe was one of the best flowing out there (especially for the money). There's some way fancy ones out there, but they're like $200 or more
Hey LT, what I ended out finding out the hard way is that there just isn't enough space next to the trans pan to avoid massive heat soak to the trans pan. (Pretty much boils the trans fluid) I ended up building my own merge collector and keeping it tight to the frame to keep it away from the trans. Looks great though.
LT, if you have a bore scope you could look inside the pipe and see if there is any "sugaring" on that stainless. That will really tell you if your too hot. When I used to weld SS my weld would look really good on the top and I would flip it over and sometimes would have that sugaring on the back.
Exhaust looks great! Glad you were ably to get it out in one peace. It didn't look good for a minute, if you would get it out!!! Can't wait to see it done!
A quick way to tell if it is 400 or 300 series stainless steel is to see if a magnet sticks. 300 series should have very little if any at all (may be some in the heat affected zone around the welds) stick with the magnet. 400 series will stick the magnet pretty strongly
You are really talented with exhausts and pretty much everything LT! Good work! Keep these video's coming man! If you're up for a challenge, I'd really like to see you build a 8 to 1 merge collector in one of your projects! I want one for my sbc just for the sound! But pre built ones don't seem to exist so I'd be curious to see a talented builder build one! 🙂 Just to see what kind of work is involved!
Lawrence LT Tolman Hell yeah it would! You’re like me. I like to do stuff completely different from the crowds. My Suburban is like a giant XJ you can camp in. Haha! :)
Aerospace welder here, color of weld only applys to titanium visual inspection. Nothing else according to D17.1 ,besides class A titanium welding takes place in a argon chamber and that shows no color when done right.
hello =) you did an excellent job, congratulations I'm doing swap 5.3 on my xj 2000, but I can't find suitable headers that fit well, all the ones that I found don't fit and I would have to cut the frame a bit but I don't want to do that, I see that you put some that fit perfectly well Could you tell me which headers you used? Thank you
LT, may I ask why you're not on TV anymore? Would you adress this in a video? Or did you do so already. You were my favorite host and all of a sudden you dropped off the radar to reappear here (on my radar at least). I like the way you present stuff and as a lifetime powersports mechanic I'm still learning to this day from guys like you.
@@LawrenceTolman I've seen that video, I remember now... please pardon my crappy old man memory. Keep it up LT, be yourself and please don't lose who you are when you become really famous on the tube cause that's what's in your future young man., being famous. Good luck on all your projects, your earned it kid!
You might want to add some flex pipes. I built the y pipe to my ls swapped xj almost the same way and it keeps blowing out the collector gasket including solid copper ones
LT, I am loving all your content. Your have inspired me to get to work on my truck, and take a few videos along the way to post them on my own channel. What camera and editing software do you recommend?
when I first started, I was using only a gopro, wired lav mic (audio is important) and iMovie. I have upgraded since then to a Sony ZV1 and Adobe Premier Pro, but I have some links I put in the description which might help for equipment.
I've watched LT as long as he was on Truck Tech, and the opportunity to have him do the swap and have it documented on You tube is why I towed it 1600 miles past probably 500 shops that could have done the job. Can't wait until he fires it up. Really surreal watching him work on my junk!
@@jimmyburks7030 aye man I’d do the same if I had junk to haul to him.. you made a great choice choosing him he does great work and is very detailed. I got to say you’ve got a nice piece of junk there man 👍🏼 I’m a big fan can’t wait till he gets it fired up
Badass LT! Can that exhaust kit only be tig welded? I haven’t welded in a very long time, since high school days. I want to get back into welding and I’d love to fab up my own exhaust. I have a cheap flux core welder available but not sure that would work.
Hey LT, do you think there is anyway a set of long tube headers for anything vette ctsv camaro Silverado ext… would even come close to fitting in a LS swap Cherokee ?
its just a 14" abrasive blade from Home Depot. It does OK on this thin material, but the cuts do require a lot of clean up. For a chop saw, I really like the Trajan Carbide teeth saws we used to use at work. They require almost no cleanup work at all, and put almost no heat into the metal
in my opinion on a modern truck, unless you're going with a true long tube header it won't be worth the money, modern exhaust manifolds flow pretty good.
@@LawrenceTolman dang.. well I thought you done really well on that show.. you know your stuff. Guess I'm just going to have to subscribe to your channel then huh lol...
I cant wait to hear how this sounds with the big Magnaflow Muffler! It'll be awesome.

Like watching the exhaust videos. Wish you were closer to KY to do the exhaust on my OBS Chevy
You gonna fab up some rock sliders?
Great video LT! Ever thought about doing a toolbox tour? I’ll love to see the tools you use to make magic happen and your history with them.
I just started watching the channel and knew you looked familiar. Then i saw a episode of truck tech today and boom there you were😂
haha you caught me!
Man I was holding my breath the whole time you were fighting to get that "Y" pipe out in one piece! Great work, it looks amazing!
Thanks 👍 I was a little worried, I'm not gonna lie

I like the ball and socket flanges as well
Love your videos! Best on the web! Extremely detailed and knowledgeable. Wish you were closer so you could do my exhaust!
Maybe one day!

another reason why I liked the narrower Y pipe, to keep exhaust a little further away from the trans pan.
I originally used the same one you had and didnt use.

Love any exhaust video but this was one I learned so much from. Thanks LT sensei.

A wealth of real life information at a realistic pace. Keep at it 😜💪🤙
Your videos are very detailed keep up the great work
Thanks, will do!
Love your attention to detail on the exhaust
Thanks!
If you have a pulse on your tig that helps a ton to tack with no filler.
i noticed it did tack a little smoother with the pulse on

lots of work I imagine, and I'd def need a better saw to make those cuts... but I'd be up for the challenge on the right car
Awesome job man! Time to upgrade to dual flow meter and purge the next system .
yeah, purging certainly makes a good difference.
Nice job L.T.Cant wait to hear it ...💪💪
me too!
Sanderson headers are who make them for Novak. In the set I got the installation instructions called for no gasket but to use exhaust rtv.
hmm... nothing I love more than some RTV on an exhaust flange lol
Good job Broseph! I can’t wait until you start on the gigantic long arm Suburban Prerunner/ Overlander on 40s!!!!! It will break the internet!!! :)

yo LT what u need in your shop garage since u always have the saw on the floor, you should build or buy a new saw table
LT you need a stand for your chop saw and bench grinder....your knees will thank you as you get less hair...I speak from experience
I really want a vertical band saw for stuff like this, but yes that would make life a lot easier

sure, you can weld stainless with just about anything, stick, TIG, or MIG. I like TIG because it looks the nicest when its done
The link says it’s 304. 304 is much better than any 400 grade stainless.

I am not anymore, I got done back in September with my final season
What a pain to weld under it
not fun for sure
Awesome build. You need some work on welding tho
practice makes perfect or something like that
I have that same truck, where’d you buy the body armors it has on it
they're from Rusty's Off Road
Do you NOT want a stand for your chop saw? Or have you just not gotten around to it?
haha, just have not gotten one yet, but also not sure about where I'd put it
👍💯
couldn't you use a magnet to hold the pipe where you need it when putting the tac weld in?
true stainless isn't magnetic
LT what do you think about shorty headers on a daily driven 2018 Silverado 5.3? I'm thinking about stainless engineering headers 25-1040 part number
in my opinion on a modern truck, unless you're going with a true long tube header it won't be worth the money, modern exhaust manifolds flow pretty good.

stainless steel pickling paste can get rid of that color

OMG start it! lol
got a little while to go before that lol
Can I get a part # on that MF muffler? I’ve been looking for a nice muffler for my mild 5.3, and can’t find anything that sounds nice.
its a 12279 5x8 body and 24" long
Link for the kits!!
just added it a few seconds ago...
Thanks man, great work on the exhaust btw 👍 and the entire swap
It means it was welded toooo hot !!!
its a fine balance between just enough heat to make the weld and too much...
😎👌👍✌🖖😁
