i study literature and i never liked reading short stories because i always thought they're boring to read and listen but really, i enjoyed reading it and listening to it at the same time and it was just entertaining and omg loved it
Why would short stories be (generally) more boring than other forms of literature you study? Like novels... which are, one might say, like long short stories.
The audience laughs because they see how ridiculous the woman’s racist comments are, and how the woman is blind to it herself. That is often how it is. The racist person does not see themselves as racist.
The fact that his mother had so many sympathizers on the bus shows how they were raised back then. That's what I call racism. But you can't change how people were raised. That's what schools are supposed to do, socialize people, but, if that doesn't take, when a person is young, there's nothing to be done for it. There's no point in punishing an old dog for not being able to learn new tricks. This ``Julius'' was more annoying to the black guy on the bus than the woman who moved or the opinions of the ladies. I wonder why the author chose to call him Julius. The great caesar who was betrayed
I don't know who's worse, the racist woman or her r/iamverysmart spoiled son. Edit: Okay I just heard the penny scene and made up my mind, the woman is too racist, she's the worst. Edit 2: He is the worst, I just finished it, he's horrible, wayyyyy too horrible.

God I hate how O'Connor's stories always have such tragic endings, I feel so bad for Julian's mother. Sure, she was somewhat racist but she was still a kind and innocent woman, she made so many sacrifices just so her son could be successful. Meanwhile, Julian thought he was the most brilliant mind of the century, a white savior, and a total cynic. And to lecture his mother like that at the end after she'd just been bashed in the face. Honestly, the black mother is just as racist as Julian's, moreso even. Knocking an older woman onto the ground like that. Still, was a very well-written story and I loved the humor and the narration. The mother's fate just breaks my heart, all of O'Connor's stories are like this which ie why I tend to have mixed feelings on them. I just prefer happy endings.

Upsetting? Trust me, it's just people getting the humour of the story. Nothing to be upset about it. And there's not a hint of racism in that humour. It's the funniness of ridiculous attitudes well-imitated. It's OK, of course, if that doesn't match with your sense of humour, but be careful not to jump to the conclusion that those of us who do find it funny are thereby showing ourselves up as racist or something like that.
