    It is too thick to be called graphene
    it is just a graphite layer...

      W. Hermann because Graphene is just one atom thick! It is totally transparent and by definition ONLY comes as a single sheet not in powder form.

      Bob Lewis Are you sure?
      What if each particle there is a very small sheet of carbon one atom thick, but because each sheet is so small in area (though being composed of many atoms) we only see them as specks of dust?

    The principle process is that the graphite(millions of graphene molecules jumbled together) is spread out in a 'thick' layer on the smooth plastic sheet, so the bottom graphenes stick to the surface, and those above are rubbed away to nearby bare plastic, where they too can stick to the surface. If you do this enough, (10-20 minutes, until there is no bare surface) and the entire surface is only 1 (molecule) layer thick, you will get no more black when you wipe with a fresh white tissue (no more stacked layers to rub off). The rubbing has also (mostly) crunched the edges of the stuck graphene sheets together (electrically), making a single large molecule of graphene on the plastic surface with pretty good conductivity. If you looked with a powerful microscope, you could see the very thin 'decoupage'-like effect (or like black sea-ice pack) with quite a few irregularities where the original graphene molecules were pushed edge-to-edge into one-another. The softer the paper and the harder you rub, the better the joints and total conductivity will be as it snaps loose the overlaps, and pushes the shards into other gaps of exposed plastic surface. (It is a little like pouring out dominoes, and spreading them out into a single layer.)

      graphene is not known for it's single atom layer specifically but for it's structure.... It's not that easy to manufacture... Until now it has only been made up to size of a credit card through very tough processes and a hell lot of capitol..... We can't make graphene just like that by rubbing...

    You use powder graphite, when the plastic surface is covered, graphite is exfoliated mechanically, so, the conductive property is due to few-layer graphene. Just an illustrative example.

  • @boblewis5558

    THAT is NOT Graphene! THAT is just a graphite coated surface which you could do with an ordinary pencil (shave off some graphite). A simpler and better way to achieve an evenly coated surface (STILL not Graphene!) would be to use colloidal graphite. This is the stuff sold as Permostat for coating PVC records to avoid surface static build up - and it works brilliantly!
    True Graphene is VERY difficult to produce in large sheets. If it were THIS easy, don't you think there would be DOZENS of manufacturers lined up producing the stuff? TRUE Graphene is just ONE atom thick and would be WAY stronger than the polythene sheet substrate on which this process is dependent. Epic FAIL I'm afraid.

    • @abraham1O2
      @abraham1O2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob Lewis more like you dont understand graphene production. Graphite is just billions of layers of graphene. There are chemical processes to separate the layers into chunks of graphene but the end result is a powder. The difference is that with the graphene powder, even just rubbing it onto the plastic surface will force the millions of layers to connect with each other at the very base of the plastic, forming a very crude sheet of graphene. If he were to continue rubbing for a while eventually only the graphene will be left on the plastic.

    • @boblewis5558
      @boblewis5558 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      abraham_102 on the contrary I understand what Graphene and graphite are only too well and the fact that graphite is comprised of layers. My two points remain:
      1. THAT is NOT Graphene, for the reasons already outlined.
      2. If it were to be such a simple process to produce Graphene then why are some of the most brilliant minds in the industry NOT using this method? Do you somehow think that IBM (one of the biggest researchers in this field) would not jump at the chance to use such a simple method to produce quantities of the stuff even if just for research? Please! Give me a break! 🤔🤔😵😵

    • @boblewis5558
      @boblewis5558 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mud eel REALLY! Please quote your sources! What do you mean by "bulk"? Sheets 1m X say 1m? 20cm X 20 cm? Or just 0.5mm X 0.5mm? The whole industry would just LOVE to know how YOU can produce just ONE 1m sq sheet never mind hundreds of thousands of square metres!

    • @abraham1O2
      @abraham1O2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bob Lewis look up a channel called the thought emporium. Also, graphene production is really easy. Whats difficult is making high quality graphene for research purposes. Calm down, drink some humble tea. Also, a bunch of researchers just recently published a method for mass production of graphene. What you are saying wouldve been true a decade ago. Nowadays, not really. There are simple ways of making shitty quality graphene, and expensive high quality methods.EDIT: you DO realize that graphene sheets come in microscopic sized chunks right? No is saying you can make huge 1m squared sheets of the stuff. Although it is now possible to do that, just very expensive.

    • @dmo4657
      @dmo4657 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is very easy to produce. A. K Geim and K. S. Novoselov used just a scotch tape and a graphite rock to produce graphene. They were awarded Nobel Prize in 2010 for this simple method.
      It might be hard to separate it from the sheet of paper so they have invented new methods for synthesising.

    Try and put an ohm meter on a pencil lead which is graphite and you will find it is a conductor. Showing that the thin film of graphite conducts electricity does not validate that you have graphene. Graphene is a great conductor of electricity and you would have very small resistance in the thousandths of an ohm.

    A very good demonstration that you have done here that you can deposit graphene sheets on a soft layer such as plastic BUT will this work on Glass ?? I suspect it but can you try on glass surface? because plastic is soft and has long strains of polymerized molecules of very low hardness while glass has high hardness about 7 and may not allow the build up of connecting layers of graphene on its surface.
