    Which one is your favourite? Contemporary cool or modern traditional?

      Modern for me. I love the strong contrast of black, white and Grey. My micro is inside the island too.

    I love that Nick and Karin disagreed on something! 😂 I guess there are some "rules" that should not be broken, but it really goes to show that taste in design is subjective. So if you want to do something and it makes you happy, trust in your own instincts and don't get too hung up on what other people are telling you to do.

    Hi Nick! I personally love the traditional space more but both with gorgeous. You had such a good point about most people not knowing about going to a stone yard or other places outside of big box retailers. I also think these custom places are way more expensive. The idea of going to a paint store, a flooring warehouse and other places always seemed like it was for the wealthy to me.

    • @SuperDrLisa
      @SuperDrLisa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same to me. No offense, I'll stick to my nearly indestructible corian countertops. The care that goes in to real stone, especially marble, is not easy. While the marble coffee table was beautiful how do you get that in there? It mudt weigh a ton! One red wine spill and I shudder to think of the repercussions.

    • @katherinespencer2073
      @katherinespencer2073 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SuperDrLisa Some furniture actually needs to have the floors reinforced. Water beds were like that so most apartment buildings did not allow them. Moving weight is always more than stable weight.

    • @katherinespencer2073
      @katherinespencer2073 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have so many more things to do each day than polish things or give specific care to things. With several properties to renovate, landscape, repair, paint, put additions on etc. fussy building materials are out. I have found as a senior that so many people, particularly women want things badly & will get into debt for them, buy often before it is fully paid for they are already neglecting the daily or weekly care required. Take for instance stone floors. Gorgeous, until you allow the grout to get dirty because most people now don't get down to scrub floors weekly or mop every evening before dirt dries in. Same w. paint. People spend all kinds of time fussing over exact shades...then don't wash their walls every spring after heating is turned off. They would be shocked if they compared the colour 5 yrs down the road. Better to go w. what you can pay cash for & be happy. Contentment is within us, not from things. I buy mistints all the time...greys, off-whites, yellows & greens. Nothing rediculous unless I'm painting the inside of the garage or shed or kids furniture. But saves a fortune over time. Then a yard of fabric w. the relevant colour in it for some accent pc & I'm thrilled w. the result & the $ still in the bank. Light shades of paint in colours which I like sometimes get tweaked by me using Tole Paint from the little bottles. HAVE NEVER HAD BAD RESULTS but can't redo that colour exactly in future.

    I prefer the softer pallet, but also wanted to point out that in my experience, a Parisian apartment would have family heirlooms (in the art and the furniture) mixed in with the contemporary items. There would also be a more eclectic use of color, for example grandmother's giant old mirror with darkly aged and flaking gilt, or papa's old tobacco-brown leather wing-back chair, or mama's favorite verdigris plant pots. Not to mention a wide variety in the photos and frames. In that way, a contemporary, neutral, pallet takes on a more natural variety of colors, shapes, and accents, which make it more homey and less like a "showroom floor".

I LOVED the applied mill work behind the bed , the mini-office in the 2nd bedroom, and the enclosed sun room in the 2nd one.

    Both of those condos are very Modern. It would be interesting to see a really traditional design. I had to chuckle at the white lint (feathers?) on the first living room's sofa. Even for a photo shoot, it couldn't be kept pristine. An obvious reminder that black-and-white themes look great but are hard to live in because - lint, animals, fingerprints, crumbs, Life.

    Both designs create a pause and applause (just made that up😉) Appreciate the explanations for choice. I disagree with her idea of pop of color in one object, though. To me a room seems more cohesive, more fluid if an interesting piece has one or two colors to pick from and spread around in smaller ways. More of a balance. Don't want to feel like the room is tilting in one direction and I can't climb my way out... Love your videos, Nick. Transitional more than modern, but I always learn helpful design tips from you. I LOVE Nicks ability to appriciate design that isn't his style. That is how you know he is a true professional. I feel like he could do do any space to meet the style and vision of the person he is designing the space for.
    NOW I am NOT a professional and I dispise that first condo so much! I know Nick is a big fan of this designer and I can respect that, but prefer the vibe of Nicks suggestions throughout the years. The message I get from his content is that you can have a clean, beautiful, intintional space that is cohesive and warm. You can create a space that takes risks but not so many that the design of the room drowns out the people in it, but instead is a curated space that helps to tell your story. You can find a balance between timeless and trendy, and you can be authentic and well designed at any price point. While Nick's Style isn't quite mine, because of his content, I feel like I better understand my own style. I would LOVE to see a model space he has designed.

    I had a condo in 2008 with the same layout as the first one, except the bathroom came before the walk in closet. AND I had the picture rail above the velvet sofa in the same location, the tall black media unit in the same location, and the grey Wassily chair too! Mind blown. 🤯

    I love this and hearing the thought process of everything. When I'm designing everything has a purpose and a reason and it's nice to learn how other designers think.

    This was so good Nick. Now I'm showing my age but definitely the Paris home for me. Although I loved that lounge in the first one. Thanks Nick for showing us through these beautiful apartments and showing us that you have legs. Cheers from Australia.

    I love the contemporary design, and also how Karin was able to make something more traditional look fresh and elegant. I love also how Nick steps in to make pertinent comments (with a hand twitch), so challenging the approach Karin has developed keeps us thinking. This type of video works week for me, but I like your sassy monologues too. I get a reliable weekly laugh from Nick.

    Loved this video! So fun to see two of my favorite design TH-camrs together. Also loved that Karen used Claire as an inspiration for her design - loved her beauty channel back in the days and just thought about her some days ago. 😄

    Hi Nick. You did exactly what you’ve suggested we do. Stay true to your style but appreciate the design of others.

    I didn't know you can have an enclosed patio. I so want that for my future home. I want to be outside but I hate bugs and honestly, the idea of a TV outside worries me due to weather + electronics. So this idea is like a middle ground. I can be outside but still inside... if that makes sense. I am so excited to see more videos like this. Also thanks for the visuals (both...concept design and real life examples) when the shakers came up. Designer to designer vocabulary doesn't necessarily need to be explained. But as a n00b, I had no idea what a shaker was let alone know what was being referenced. So cutting to some visual aids really helped and I doubt I'll forget what a shaker is now. (I personally liked the thin shaker or flat panel) Such a fun, educational, ans inspirational video. Great job Nick! Thanks for sharing Karin!
