Mike's Pile-up Battle - Solo POTA (Audio Only) = CW Practice

- Trying a new video format when activating Solo. Becky (N4BKY) and I love to POTA and activate together but on occasion I head out solo (she’s golfing this time … HIHI). I recorded audio, since my helper wasn’t there, to be able to check my logs. People learning CW might find it fun trying to copy this POTA activation. Can you get them before me? It takes me longer to get call signs than the average bear so you may get lots of chances HIHI

❓WHO ARE WE?
We're Michael & Becky, also known as N4FFF and N4BKY. We're an adventure couple who also loves CW (morse code) and radio stuff. We are both trying to get better at CW so having two of us there trying to copy really helps us figure most of it out! We love adventures and this is another way for us to get out there and have fun together.
If you catch one of us on the air most likely we are both at the ready. We like to hunt POTA's and each make contact so don't be surprised if you hear from us both.

Nice job. You had a few people responding when you weren't calling them. That's frustrating, but you pushed through nicely.
I always like QRP because it limits the pileups, except when it doesn't. ;)
For sure! It definitely makes it easier as an activator when the hunters try really hard to only respond when they know we are questioning them to come back :-) We also know that especially for anyone learning CW, maybe they can't hear the other stations and may not be able to copy well enough to be sure we weren't calling them. I'm sure when we first started hunting and maybe sometimes when there is a ton of noise, we could end up guilty of the same HIHI
We are QRP 95% of the time. This was one of the first times running above that. I am guessing that meant more stations could hear me so more likely for the pileups.

All videos are great! I normally can’t watch videos so I listen to them and reason why I enjoy CW copying videos because I only need my ears. However if the person is still learning and need to confirm what they copy those subtitles to that you add is really good too. Like the format and keep it up! Hope to work your station soon. KQ3Q
Lidi, thank you for the feedback! You make excellent points. I also often just listen to the videos like yours while I'm exercising or doing errands for copy practice. I forgot where I picked it up, but defaulted to 550 a while back. For some reason, on our G90, it ignores it when we turn on the narrow filter, so I kinda have to be used to both.
Thanks for the tip on the RV Radio Network Fall Rally! We'd love to go if we can pull it off. We'll start researching it now. Sounds perfect for us. If you are going too, it would be fun to meet in person!

This is the app that we use. It actually is what got us into pota in the first place. It makes it so easy to quickly see the spots and does the hard work of recording the part number and stuff for you.
The app has a built-in map feature which is probably perfect for most people. I built all the maps in this video manually using custom python code that I wrote for visualizing my activations.
I actually switched to using it not just for doing activations but I have a separate log in the app for my main log and a separate one for my hunting. I then just periodically export the logs and upload them to qrz.
