Automatic generator start and stop / Automatic Transfer Switch / Automatic changeover switch

  • An #automatic_transfer_switch (#ATS) or an #automatic_changeover_switch transfers power supply from its primary source to a backup #generator automatically, when it senses partly failure or a total failure in the primary source.
    When a failure occurs in the primary power system the ATS invokes the backup source which is a three phase diesel powered #automatic_generator here, to run electric equipment until utility power is restored.
    This ATS is capable of automatic starting and stopping of the generator too, in addition to the automatic transferring of power to the load.
    ATS needs to be properly designed and wired to the primary and backup power sources, as it must communicate effectively with both power sources to switch power and connect the equipment to the proper power source with a minimum delay period.
    If the video is useful, please subscribe to the channel.
    Thank you.

      Actually the size of the panel is to be decided according to the component sizes and the relevant wiring work too. Some component sizes might be different according to their brands also.

      Generator manual start button wires need to be connected to the two green points marked as start connection on the diagram for automatic starting.
      Generator stop button wires need to be connected to the two red dots marked as stop connection for auto stopping of the generator.
      If you need an auto - manual switch for generator, connection from the battery can be provided through a 2 pole breaker.
      This breaker OFF position will act as generator on manual starting only, still the power will automatically change over after you start the generator manually.

    Excellent explanation! Just one question though: contactors have 3 main poles and 2 accessory poles?? The ones I usually see have just one accessory...

    • @ElectroAcademyEA
      @ElectroAcademyEA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normally contactors have 2 auxiliary contact points, NO and NC.
      But, according to the requirement, you can purchase heavy duty contactors with 4 auxiliary contact points, two NO and two NC points.
      There are contactors where you can add more auxiliary contact points on to it also.
      Additional contact points can be slide on to the contactor top and lock it.
      It should be done according to the manufacturer recommendations only.

    • @ElectroAcademyEA

      @@michaelisongekwere1402 Yes.
      Further, you can use a 2 pole breaker when wiring 12 volt power from the battery to this system.
      Breaker "ON" position is your generator automatic start/stop operating position.
      Similarly, breaker "OFF" position will act as generator manual start/stop position.
      In both these positions power transferring will be fully automatic, although you have to start the generator manually, in breaker "OFF" position.

    Can’t one timer relay do the job

    • @ElectroAcademyEA
      @ElectroAcademyEA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Timer 1 is there to make generator to run on load for 2 to 3 minutes even after grid power is available.
      If grid power goes off again within this period, generator is on load and power supply will not be interupted.
      Although recommended, you can omit this timer if intermittent power disturbances are minimal.

    • @ElectroAcademyEA
      @ElectroAcademyEA  ปีที่แล้ว

      From the generator supply, you get separate neutral cable.
      So, the two neutral cables need to be connected separately, as shown on the video.

    • @ElectroAcademyEA

      Sorry for that I have not shown it in the video.
      As done for the 3 power lines, you need to get two neutral lines separately from the grid and from the generator to the junction box, and connect it.
      From the junction box, only one neutral line to the load.
      3 pole contactors on grid side and generator side, need to be changed with 4 pole contactors to provide neutral wire through it.

    OK but I have a question how would this design change if you you wanted to build an ATS that changes between 3 sources. An example would be if you had grid, solar backup and generator in that priority order. Would be great to know as there's almost no info available on this specific topic

    • @JOSE-tt8tb

      Bro, it’s simple, just make another same set of panel and it’s out considered as second prior after the grid, for example just do this circuit with solar and generator and it’s out again do with grid supply, in this way you can make infinite number of power sources 💪😉

      When Isolator is at OFF position, you need to start the generator manually when grid power is not there.
