I’m assuming with the soul spear and mass damage difference it probably all depends on the enemy resistance % multiple hits against a weak target is gonna add up more than one big hit and a strong enemy multiple hits do less and a single hit does more damage

True, deathcam mode is ROUGH. As someone who’s done a lot of challenge runs, i literally never use any of the major glitches like that just because of how awful it is.
13:50 My guess is that O&S have higher flat magic reduction then Quelag. To explain there's two ways every attacks damage gets reduced, first flat and then by a percent, so if you have 5 soul masses doing 100 damage and one soul spear dealing 400 but the enemy has a high flat defence like maybe 30 you'll loose more damage with a bunch of smaller individual projectiles since 100-30=70x5=350, where as with a smaller flat defence like 10 you'd end up dealing 90x5=450 dmg (after that the percentage reduction would obviously be the same regardless of the type of attack)
This is also the reason why elemental weapons do less damage than purely physical weapons with the same AR. In terms of the damage calculations, it's effectively 2 hits, each of which gets reduced by the flat amount first and the percentage second. You usually get better damage output with a +15 (or +5 crystal) weapon with an elemental buff rather than a +10 fire/divine/magic or +5 lightning/chaos/occult/enchanted weapon.
This was my assumption too, but according to the FuturePress Strategy guide, Ornstein and Smough actually have *less* magic resistance than the Iron Golem and even Quelaag. Magic resistances: Quelaag: 229 Iron Golem: 326 Regular Ornstein: 226 Super Ornstein: 221 Regular Smough: 153 Super Smough: 153 Now, granted, I don't actually have the FuturePress Strategy guide myself to check, but two separate wikis quote it and agree on the numbers. There's also the chance that said strategy guide is flat out wrong. It wouldn't be the first time a Dark Souls strategy guide was just wrong about something. Also, the guide was written in 2011, so patches may have changed these numbers if they were true at some point. It would be nice if someone could datamine the game to find out enemy damage resistances, but I know Dark Souls' code is pretty finicky to work with.
Another banger. Information on strength scaling with Dark Bead (and Dark orb): all catalysts technically do add extra physical damage as long as they have strength or dex scaling. It actually uses the same generic formula for calculating the physical damage of the catalyst R2; most are just pretty bad. Tin banishment, demons catalyst, and manus catalysts are really the only ones that provide any significant boost at 50 strength / dex.
13:02 Before the cutscene, Smough was in that spot doing his big hammer scoop attack. That's a crazy amount of time for that hitbox to remain active, I've never seen that before.
If the cutscene starts while a hitbox is present the hitbox doesn't get removed until the area is reloaded (i'm not sure if it needs a soft or a hard reload) since the other boss technically never finishes the attack.
@@Titanite_In_NY I think it only happens with this one. I'm not sure but i think the mob being despawned by the cutscene in the middle of the attack is what prevents the hitbox from being removed, since that's probably handled by the mob's animation; and I can't remember any other cutscenes that remove active enemies. Edit: Thinking about the cutscene where Seath appears from behind in his final arena I don't remember there ever being a lingering hitbox from one of the clams but then again it's very rare to trigger it while a clam is in the middle of an attack and not merely chasing you.
I just watched a video about the attack hit boxes (of enemies) in from soft games and let me tell ya, they are fucking nuts. Some hit boxes pop and and out of existence during attacks with no clear logic in timing, or are misaligned and in nonsensical places. And trust me it’s even worse seeing the hit boxes with your eyes than anything I could describe with words. Apparently a lot of the difficulty in from soft fights is how inconsistent and unintuitive the hitbox design is, literally not our fault
TrevTheDev has a neat video on how damage calcs in DkS1 work, and what's probably relevant for Soul Spear vs Homing Soul mass is that there are different damage calculations done depending on your attack's pre-defense damage and the foe's relevant defense. I would guess that your damage is so high against the early game bosses that both spells end up in the same damage tier despite Soul Mass being 5 separate attacks, and thus they deal more total damage, whereas against the later bosses, Soul Spear is likely a damage tier or 2 above the individual hits of Homing Soul Mass, causing it to face a much more forgiving damage calculation.
Fun fact “the place beyond the pines” was filmed in my hometown. Not fun fact it was a massive pain in the ass to drive with in 50 miles of where they were shooting.
The Demon's, Manus, and Tin Banishment Catalysts are the best for Dark Sorceries specifically. This is because these staffs use their STR/Dex scaling to increase the physical component of the spells far more than the other staffs.
13:50 it's because they have higher defence. Homing soul mass is 5 hits, so it has to calculate defence 5 times. A 1000 damage soul spear just has to cut through 10 defence (resulting in 900), whereas a 1300 damage homing soul mass has to cut throguh 100 defence 5 times, lowering it's damage (resupting in 800) On enemies with lower defence, homing soulmass will always deal more damage Also the calculations aren't technically done with direct subtraction, it takes your attack and the enemy's defense and changes the formula based off its ratio, but the calculation results in something very similar to direct subtraction so for simplicity's sake it's the best intepretation
If we're considering the ratio formula, each soul mass only deals 260 damage, and if a boss's defence is 100, that's a ratio of 2.6, and that ratio in the formula results in around 70% damage. The soul spear would have a ratio of 10, so the formula would allow it to deal 90% damage
Regarding Dark Bead scaling: Any catalyst that has some form of physical scaling can boost dark sorceries' phys damage, most of them just have such low scaling that it's not worth doing.
Seeing how much HP bosses have was surprising. If you're strong enough to kill Gaping Dragon, you're technically strong enough to kill Gywn. At least as far as stats as concerned
You really spelled out that your a good sorcerer. This challenge is quite difficult so I'm glad you've shoot your shot (or should i say one shot) with this one! Very nice 👌

I mean, you could also just try using two spells at once. One shotting enemys requires, that all the damage needs to be done at the same second. ONE HITTING enemies only allows you to kill them with one hit
It's because of the math of the magical resistance. Homing has 5 hits which are all calculated separately and none of them do more than 2* / 4* the magic resist number.
I actually appreciate the fact that this wasnt actually doable, and then I got to see kind of a "what if?" please do more challenges that are less likely to actually work.
2:40 Something to note about the Tin Banishment Catalyst is that it actually does work better than the standard and even Tin Crystalization when using Dark Sorceries. It also gives Dark Sorceries Dex scaling, though it would still be an inferior version of Manus' Catalyst due to its lower base MadAdjust. Still, I don't think it should've been fully dismissed, especially in the part when you had to give yourself Manus' Catalyst in an attempt to one shot Artorias.

I've never heard of it, but could Soul Spear have something like a "big spell" bonus like large weapons have where you can stagger certain enemies with one hit while small weapons don't and that's why Soulmass dealt less damage to Ornstein? Or maybe because they're humanoids while the others (Taurus, Quelaag, Golem) aren't? Maybe some kind of pierce effect where the spear ignores a certain % of reduction while the mass does not?
