    i've been digging into this because
    some old but quality monitors i find at the thrift store gives me zero eye strain
    but new monitors from best buy and microcenter and amazon, give me eye strain despite all the eye strain tech.
    i'm concluding that its the backlight technology
    not many videos on youtube actually address this

    I work in the communications field. Multi-mode fiber uses LED light (usually red) to transmit data over the fiber optic cable. There are warnings about looking directly into the end of the fiber connections and the possibility of invisible light being a risk of eye damage. It's the invisible light that is the most damaging to the eye.

    • @Madarpok
      @Madarpok 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That warning is not exacly related to LEDs. Fiber optics often uses infrared light, which is invisible, but it can still burn. Because it is invisible, you are not alarmed that the cable is active and accidents happen. Also it does not trigger the blink/look away reflex like visible light.

    • @Gamevet
      @Gamevet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most multi-mode fiber equipment in the 90s used LED to transmitted light, over using Laser Diode light used by single mode. I've seen switches in the 90s (with white LED light) that had warnings right above the ST about looking directly at the light. Nowadays, companies like Cisco use red laser diodes to transmit data.
      Yeah, the IR light is what is the most dangerous and as Bryan says in his video, it is being emitted by LED screens.

    • @Madarpok

      This video was NOT about infrared light at all, it was about blue light. And LED screens do not emit significant IR.

      You're right. I watched it again and noticed he was talking about UV light.

      Gamevet IR is the most beneficial part of the entire electromagnetic spectrum, not the most dangerous(that label should go to Gamma and X rays). Looking directly at a harsh laser diode is what's bad for your eyes irrespective of the wavelength emitted.

    WLED's are terrible for your eyes. They produce enough blue light to cause damage, as well as trigger the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells to stop melatonin secretion. That disrupts circadian rhythms as well as increases cancer risk, since melatonin is an essential antioxidant.
    WLED's and CFL's are both pretty bad for you, and you're better off using incandescent bulbs for indoor lighting. If you light to appropriate levels, it's actually very inexpensive to use incandescents, and they have a 100 CRI as well as no metamerism.
    The trend of replacing high pressure sodium street lights with WLED's is another dangerous and stupid one. Since blue light scatters most(which is why the sky is blue), it makes driving in fog or rain more dangerous, as well as producing veiling luminance and glare.

    This is an issue with pretty much all panels (phones, tablets, etc.). In the day you should be fine, as usually how it's set is fine for day. But at night. That's when your eyes will get strained and what not, much more when you don't have natural light which is more of a blue haze (like a pure white)
    So the solution is usually something like F.lux (which changes the screen to be more orange, which really eases the strain on your eyes. Or something with a Amber / Orange filter glasses, something like Gunnar Optics.

    Blue light also can trick your brain into thinking that the light is brighter than it actually is. This in tern will trick your brain into staying into day mode for longer making it harder to go to sleep.
    You will see blue lighting used in dark places you need to see but don't want light to bleed into the sounding area - for example when lighting up parts of backstage, blue lighting is used so that walking lights don't conflict with the stage lighting.

    LEDs are naturally in the infrared/red spectrum, its where they're most efficient. My eyes have actually gotten better in the past 6 years, used to wear glasses in high school and quit all throughout college and thereafter. Switched to ALL LEDs, monitors, phone, bulbs, etc. It's a matter of taking care of your eyes, i always turn brightness all the way down and switch to a warmer color tint on all screens, always have a light on and never read in pitch black or in super bright light.

  • @Madarpok
    @Madarpok 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the problem was that your blue LED light was using, well, blue LEDs. Blue LEDs emit only blue light, whereas white LEDs emit other colors as well. However, not all white LEDs are equal, in fact there can be massive differences in the spectrum of the light emitted. One should probably seek out LED lights that have a warm white color instead of a cool white as they should give out more green,yellow and red light and less blue. Also many LED lights have a flicker at 100-120Hz, some bulbs flicker a lot, many has a bit of flicker, and a few have no flicker. Some people may be sensitive to that.
    On the topic of monitors having LED backlights, I think it is less of a problem than in general LED lighting. The LCD panel has red, green and blue subpixels, and thus two thirds of the screen area will have color filters that block blue light. Only the blue subpixels will let blue light through. I guess if one is spending a lot of time looking at a mostly white or blue screen, then it can still be a concern, but most monitors provide a way to set the intensity of the RGB channels separately, so one can always just lower the blue value in the OSD and get a nice reduction in blue light.
    Oh and some LED backlit monitors flicker too depending on the brightness set, and it can cause eye fatiuge in some people.

    Flourescent light is also bad for your eyes. It's been tested by health specialist and opticians it has a very detrimental effect on ppl suffering from glaucoma. So I am assuming it cannot be that good for healthy eyes neither.
    LED's are in fact not that bad in terms of lightning they produce, when compared to all the other lightning alternatives to the incandescent bulbs LEDs come closest to their gamma curve and is the most natural from the lot.
    The problem with LEDs and particular the ones used in the monitor displays is that in many cases the companies are using blue rather than pure white leds f.e., even some of the ones that are supposed to be white has that blue peak. Maybe more than some.
    Gunnar optics aren't actually guaranteed to protect your eyes from the UV light, the visible blue one yeah, but unless they sport a 100% uv protection on them I wouldn't be that sure that they are keeping your eyes safer from the "blue led" light.
    What is more of a bet to protect your eyes and minimize the risk is glasses made from stuff like trivex that have inherited 100% UV protection. Polycarbonate has it too. Decent sun glasses with 100% uv protection work as well.
    Other than that you may be able to reduce eye strain, but if you are talking about lowering the risk of long term damage you need to use something that has 100% uv prot, bcs uv isn't in the visible spectrum, at least not in the human one. You could wear tinted shades or spectacles, but without the uv protection you might be just as unprotected as you were without them.

    Get a lower frequency LED. It's not the LED but the color of the light.
    Also that's cyan, not white. White light is the combination of all visible wavelengths.
    Cheapass white LEDs use a fluorescent phosphor to make yellow to balance out the blue. RGB LEDs are much better for white lights.
    Use a red/orange LED instead. They exist.

      Hey Josh, Paul is right... it's either 4690 + H97 Mobo or 4690K + Z97 Mobo. If you want to overclock, and I suggest you do, Gigabyte offer some decent Z boards at that $150 range you want to spend. The PSU isn't the best, non-japanese caps, below average ripple etc and 750w is crazy overkill for the system. Look for something with better quality at 600-650w. The case also has no room for the ASUS DRW, you need an external drive to install Windows from a DVD. Also, get Win 8.1, not 7, all the negativity about it at release just doesn't fly anymore.
      au.pcpartpicker.com/p/mwvfRB
      There ya go! $1623 (without external DVD drive). Z97 mobo, better psu, slightly faster RAM, the rest is pretty much the same except... drum roll... and still under $1700... with... a 256gb Crucial Mx100 SSD!

    Interesting topic, at night time i run a 5metre RGB LED Strip around my room to give it some light, it can get quite bright so i do lower the intensity, but for me personally ive never really noticed anything different after been exposed to the LEDs for a few hours, even the next morning. Light doesnt affect me as much as sound, could be something

    Folks they are using blue led on all electronics reason,to throw you circadian rhythm,that's what tell your body when to go to sleep.
    At night instead of feeling sleepy and going to bed you stay up watching tv,with that blue led shining in your eyes or on your laptop.
    By science it's fact blue light is bad for your eyes,the cars with led lights,when they came out with the flashlight you couldn't look into them because of the intense glow so why they use them for headlights?
    People think having bright headlights on their car help at night but it doesn't because they only can be so bright,when it rains most the light reflects off the wet road.
    The halogen is a nice orange glow,it's natural,led is not,our eyes are meant for the sunlight and the moonlight.
    One way to stop this ,is stop buying the led bulbs in the stores,run regular bulbs in your house.

      I started stock piling incandescent, and halogen par bulbs back in 2007 when I heard they would be banning them.
      I never liked cfl bulbs, LED are the same , but most have a sickening flicker.

    Not only led's but led monitors also have this blue light hue. I do a lot work in the computer (animating) after a couple of years my eyes started to get way to tired and dry,that feeling when you come of salt water in the beach it actually stings a bit. So I bought the gunnar optiks,it has a lot of bullshit advertising like get faster reflexes n more headshots such n such. When you get pass that type of promo bull shit they actually say that it will block this blue hue and actually help with reading text n enhance a bit of contrast. I've been using them for about 6 years now I will not dare stare at a monitor without these lenses now, i could go on for hours staring at the monitor now n when im finished my eyes feel way better. You should give these a try, the help a lot n protect your eyes its just the way they present them kinda stupid.

    There is a reason why my BenQ 2411z has a LowBluelight option.. which basically changes RGB scheme to lower blue levels thus everything is slightly yellowish. Weirdly though, first weeks when I used that feature my eyes hurt like bitch after 2-3 hours... now I am used to it and after 10 hours in front of monitor my eyes are nowhere near as fatigued as before. There is something to it...

    • @totojejedinecnynick
      @totojejedinecnynick 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will notice it on white backgrounds.. like here on white BG that youtube has. If you ramp lowBlueLight up to maximum you will notice that white becomes slightly less blue-ish and becomes slightly yellow - nothing disturbing tho. However that is valid and useful only if you have RGB settings and white balance set properly (in monitor and your GPU drivers as well). Previously I had ASUS monitors and I must say that dialing that to perfection was easy.. but this benq... a lot of testing and eye fatigue had to be experienced before I mastered it :D

    I'm still using incandescent, and halogen bulbs. I pay little more for electricity, I dont mind. Never was fan of LED lightning. Also, still using CRT monitor. Never had good feeling from new televisions/monitors, they are probably LED backlit. Too bad, at least one company didnt let making new quality CRT monitors, Im sure still enough people have interest about them, so at least one company can live out of it. I'm finding banning normal bulbs as attack against freedom and rules of capitalism as people still wants them, and same as you can pay extra for luxury dinner, you should have option to pay luxury for electricity to have nicer lightning.

      After 15-20 minutes after looking at Led backlit screen, phone or being in a room with led bulbs or lamps i get headaches, horrible eyestrain, dry eyes, double vision, motion sicknesss, weakness in the whole body, losing the ability to mentally focus, this only happens to me from led lightning can stare at my ccfl and crt all day without issues. I wish all LED lights were obsolete. They ruin the night sky, they blind you when driving from oncoming cars and they even change the colour of items, so you're unsure of the correct colour (for people who rely on colour design). They are just awful.

    Blue light doesn't damage your eyes, but looking at mostly blue light for a while before going to bed might degrade the quality of your sleep, and being tired in the morning will make your vision feel weaker.
    Warmer light sources like incandescent lights don't trick your brain into thinking it's daytime.
    Ultraviolet damages your retina, although LEDs are not large sources of UV.

      Matheus Bitencourt I am changing the bulbs that I get exposed to for any duration at night to incandescent. Both led and cfl are great in the morning when you want to boost your serotonin production. Otherwise if you use them in the evening or at night you are interfering with your circadian rhythm.

    • @cloviscareca
      @cloviscareca 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bret Fuzz you're damn right. I did exactly the same thing. I duplicate every light spot in my home, so I have a spot with powerful CFL at morning/afternoons and low power incandescent bulbs at night. I don't like led anyway
