@C. B. Gitty Crafter Supply Are canjos a slightly more modern version of an old Appalachian one-string (occasionally 2) instrument called a 'Pickin Stick'?
Hello Will, yes canjos are basically one-string dulcimers and are played in a very similar way. If you learn to play a song on a canjo, you should fairly easily be able to translate that over to an Appalachian dulcimer.
Diddly bows are played with slides, these are not. (they can be I guess, but they are fretted, whereas diddly bows are not fretted because they are only played with slides). They originated with poor african americans during the reconstruction and jim crow eras, who could not afford to buy an instrument. Canjos, on the other hand, are descended from an old mountain instrument called a 'pickin stick' that had one, occasionally 2, strings, that have been around since before metal cans became a widespread thing. Music sticks AKA chord sticks instruments are also a descendant of the pickin stick, except a chord stick has 3 strings and a triangle or teardrop shaped wooden soundbox. A popular brand of those instruments is the McNally Strumstick.
Hello, Nathaniel. Thank you for asking about what books we carry. We have several canjo songbooks which you can see here: www.cbgitty.com/search.php?search_query=canjo%20books§ion=product While we don't have bass books (yet) or books specific to music theory, we do have a large selection of books and other educational resources www.cbgitty.com/books/ If you have any questions at all, please feel free to reach us at support@cbgitty.com, and we'll get back to you asap
We have done a couple in the past, but don't have any production models. You could of course restring one of our canjos with a larger, wound string if you wanted to though.
Reverb Mystery Box crew? After seeing every Reverb review that mentions what they recieved saying they got a Canjo, I'm left wondering, do *all* of the Mystery Boxes contain a Canjo? These things are cool but I asked everyone I know to get me the mystery box as a holiday gift hoping to get a bit of variety and having a few new handmade instruments in my collection, and I made plans with my friend group/bandmates to do a mystery box secret santa thing. I'm considering replanning this because as cool as these are, I don't need half a dozen Canjos hahaha.
Thanks for saying so, Ripp. We like them too. And given that the C. B. Gitty shop is in an old mill building in New England, we're surrounded by bricks.
Thanks for checking out this video and leaving a comment, Tommy. You can see all of our finished canjos, canjo kits, and canjo books here www.cbgitty.com/search.php?search_query=canjo§ion=product
