- How Princess Diana "stole the limelight" from the Queen. Traditionally, Elizabeth marked the beginning of each parliamentary session with a formal ceremony and a speech in the House of Lords. In honour of the occasion, she would dress in ceremonial robes and wear a crown. The monarch was usually accompanied by members of the royal dynasty as well. Royal biographer James Whitaker testified: "Diana had an incredible new hairdo, and she showed up with it at an extremely important event confirming the sovereign's authority, and it all went to waste because the newspapers and television channels concentrated only on Diana's haircut. Elizabeth didn't mind Diana's new haircut per se, that's not the point, but by presenting it on the opening day of Parliament she diverted all the attention away from the important event. And that's not good for democracy and it's not good for the Windsors." The princess's hair has caused a stir because it is the longest length ever grown by a Princess of Wales. Diana's stylist Richard Daltonotmet that he and the princess were shocked by the attention. He said that after that, for those events where the princess was to appear next to Elizabeth, they chose the most restrained styling options.

The media in England is mostly tabloid, and very sleazy. They don't have any papers with the caliber of the NY TImes or Washington Post.

Just shows how powerful Di was if she could do this with just a new hair style. Di brought a sense of style to the Royal Family, something they had never known before. When you consider how frumpy the Queen and Princess Anne used to dress, it was nice to see an attractive lady with a sense of style for a change.

Every time Lady Di appeared in public no one could see anyone else, it was not only her beauty but her grace and charisma and that was not her fault, her soul attracted attention even if she had worn the most humble dress or hairdo, she was transparent and pure like a breath of the most needed fresh air.
It's so stupid. She was just trying to look presentable for an important occasion as royal protocol demanded of her. Whatever she did she was going to get the spotlight because the media was obsessed with her. She really couldn't win with that family.

The attention that she drew in this way upset others for the same reason. Charles would be at a charity event & want press coverage, but the paparazzi were taking pictures of Diana in an outfit or hat. Same for Princess Anne & her patronages. I understand the reason for wanting those important things highlighted, but Diana didn’t deserve their animosity. She couldn’t hide every day to prevent the press choosing to cover her instead.
Diana was a blessing to the gene pool of royal family as well as King George and Margaret. Thanks to them, the world had very handsome crown princes and very beautiful grandchildren who are getting better and better looking day by day as day grow up..

I heard in documentaries that no one is allowed to upstage the queen. Even when the queen would finish eating, everyone had to put down their utensils and be finished, too. This was a fantasy series, so there were women called confessors, that had magic to control people, and they ranked higher than a queen and king so they had the longest hair. I think commoners weren’t allowed to have hair past their earlobes, it had to be kept very short
