  • Gardening can save a family anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousands depending on how much your family eats. The benefit is that it is all grown organically so the true value is much higher. This is how many plants I grow to make my recipes for an entire year. A great place to start is writing out all of your classic recipes and determining what you can grow from those meals.

    A B O U T M E:
Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are TH-cam, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s TH-cam channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her TH-cam channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

It would have been nice if you had concluded with a roundup comparison of purchasing next to your advised method. I have been fighting to get my wife to prep for years now and she is packet reheats all the way. I have simple tastes but I now realise that I have to learn to preserve and cook (hint hint) the whole way. My wife's reaction to your video was "what about the power cost of doing all this?" I come from a semi-rural suburb in Australia and my wife was an urban dweller in Germany but now we are in a rural area in Germany (I won that one) Keep up the good work and ps I'll be learning to cook and preserve this winter!

I make sure I plant extra pumpkins and squash via the three sisters. They store well in my cold cellar. The excess is organic feed for my meat chickens. NO dig no waste garden, if I don't eat it, the chickens will and the rest goes in the compost. I'm going to check out your channel for composting and the use of manures. I'm another one who has subbed because of CP. You had about 31K then. Almost another 10K since. Glad to see the co-lab is paying off. For both. One of my favorite aspects of my gardening. Is using the over the rail planters for veggies. All around my patio rail I have 10 planters. Mostly bush beans. When they are getting near the end of bearing beans. I have planted more seeds in the soil beside them. When the first plants are done. I just cut them off. That way I don't destroy the soil and roots. I look forward to watching and learning more. Topped my peppers because of you. Thx.

    -2 pounds green beans
    -1 pound carrots
    -1 pound summer squash
    -1 pound winter squash
During our 2020 pandemic, I had to go to 4-5 stores to find these items for about a month. The last 2 years I have been growing a lot of these items (squash & green beans). I just freeze them in frozen bags. Buying them frozen is around 6-7 dollars a week for my one dog!

Ngl, I really dislike the word "prepper" now. I always relate it to angry ppl buying those crappy overpriced MRE's sold in a bucket.
Anyways, I'm glad this video was made for the novice subsistence growers and a review for the seasoned.
    Just want to add in:
When it comes to seedlings: check your local nurseries for good priced seedling ready to transplant (AVOID big box stores; ive had better luck with plants bought at the dollar store lol). I recomend this for plants you dont want to start from seed (for me it's eggplant). I picked up some eggplants for $2 a pop (compared to $5 a pop at the HD.
I also recommend looking into seed trade events near you. Here we have them once a year and you pay a small entrance fee. I bring some of my unwanted/surplus seeds to trade with other growers and recieve other seeds for free. They also sell fruit tree scions. This is a great chance to network and get the down low about other resources and services you might need later on.
Always PLAN PLAN PLAN before you do anything but know more stuff will pop up, and that's just a natural part of the process. Be you and be creative, this is your garden. Goodluck

I am looking forward to canning with you. I do alot of canning every year both water bath and pressure canning. New recipes and ideas for preserving in other ways will be very much appreciated. I have a dehydrator and a freeze dryer is in my wish list. May not happen but you can always wish. I am lucky that there is a farm about 2 hours from me where I can get produce in bulk. I usually buy 150lbs of tomatoes, 40 lbs of onions, 50lb of potatoes, 40lbs of bell peppers(growing my own this year) With price increases this year I think it will be around $200. Last year it was about $140. We grow our own garlic, beans, cucumbers, snap peas, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Cabbage, zucchini, winter squash (this year we are trying Georgia Candy Roaster) cantelope, watermelon, and leeks. We have blackberries, blueberries and red currant bushes. I do grow hot peppers, as well as a few tomatoes and every other year we grow tomatillos to make salsa Verdi.

“How to keep your green thumb green… in the winter”?
What would be needed to grow indoors in darker parts of the year, but also when it’s bloody cold out? (Say like I’m in Edmonton)
Lights you recommend? Worth it to buy a light?
    Heating mats? Again, worth it?
Plants or foods worth growing indoors or ones that would be a waste of time.

*Canadian accent, "Pasta, pasta, pasta"! 😂😭💀 Oh, and I've got 12 garden rows I've been planting corn and cukes in, so far. About to plant pole beans and cowpeas. Got two raised beds. One has 7 potatoes planted, and the other was intended for peppers, but my two surviving pepper sprouts can't seem to handle the sun, no matter how much I harden them, so they haven't gone in there yet. In the meantime, there are some really healthy volunteers from our compost that have sprouted up, so I may just let those ride, and see what happens. Got garlic sprouting, bunching onions, and most of my other stuff keeps failing after I sprout it, or else I'd have more varieties 😆. But this is only my second actual garden, and I'm diggin' it.

I have been looking for a video like this for a long time. Love it!!! I am already working on the garden thing….but this is next! Regarding cheaper options…in my town we have something called “Free Plant Stands.” I have been able to start gardening with the donations of grow bags and seeds from the generosity of the gardening community. Many libraries in the US at least, also have free seed banks. I have desert soil where I live so I have invested a bit of money in getting soil going here, but am planning to worm “farm” within my beds. Blessings to all starting your gardens.

I wish I had seen this video when I was sowing my seeds! I have 9 tomato plants (1/2 early girl and the rest assorted), and 9 pepper plants (5 sweet bell pepper, and rest versions of other hotter peppers). My plan was “I’m going to learn food preservation”. I may be in trouble… or have Neighbours who benefit from my abundance! Haha

Hi Ashley! Great video, but you didn't mention how much you spent for hydro or gas to cook all of your cans. I think it will deduct some amount from your total. But the best benefit from all home-growing veggies is quality. You can't compare cucs, toms, cabbage for sure, greeny leaves. If you tried once home-growing veggies, you will never go back to store one. TY

l🥰 "I go overboard...CLEARLY". lol. LOVE you Ashley!! Thank you so much for this video and I cannot wait for your new channel. I went bigger this year and rented a community garden plot. I had no idea how much to grow, and did an estimate of my own. 40 tomatoes, 60 potatoes, 500 peas, 2 different pepper plants, 2 cucumber plants, idk how many green beans (hopefully enough for a year with both bush beans and pole beans), pie pumpkins, zucchini and sweet corn from my father in laws field. All food to can or dehydrate. I have a 37 feet row of beets, and another of carrots. Onions every where in-between celery and tomatoes. ummm and I am pretty good on how many herbs (basil, celery, marjoram , thyme, ect). I can't wait to see if I have enough, and your estimates here are helping me so much!!! I also stepped up on succession planting and interplanting. I am having so much fun!!

I typically like to just can the tomatoes as is and turn the jar of tomatoes into what ever I need for dinner so I don’t end up having say more salsa when I’m in need of pasta sauce. 🤷🏻‍♀️
At one point I knew that 12 Roma plants would provide enough canned tomatoes for the year, however after watching your tomato trellis video I am hoping for a higher yield!

I have tried to dehydrate grated potatoes without using oil for breakfast hash browns , like the kind the store sells in a small cardboard container, but when it cooks it turns to a mashed potato like consistency. Have you tried it? Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

I've read cronicles of explorers that came through the plains over a hundred years ago or so, they spoke of vast tracks of land torn up " ...as far as one can see" by the passing of millions of buffalo, it was said to extend to a depth of over a foot, and totally blackened the surface. If the prairrie survived ( if not "was created by") 10,000 years of these herds roaming about where does the idea of no till come from? Working nutriants into the soil seems natual in this situation.

Great video is what people need to know.I'm Italian so I did plant so many tomatoes too much maybe 55 for 2 people, and plenty of eggplants and sweet peppers I will roast them and save them in the freezer sweet pepper in zone 9 almost 10 they died in January plus is will cover them up. They give me so many cherries and I'm not crazy about them I put rum, with cloves lemon peels, and cinnamon, so I did with apricots,I did jams and ice cream too. Did my mint syrups cost 50 cents for the sugar when I buy cost me 3 euro. Prices of veggie will rise so fast is what the evil goverment ..I have potato, sweet potato, corn, herbs, fennel, plenty of pumpkins, zucchini, etc., plus winter stuff like broccoli...i will donate the insects that EU and WEF suggest to them. People waste money on vacation right now instead to get ready. Pity I did not move to Mexico cause I love avocado.

One thing that I do a TON of is using regular old pasta sauce jars for canning. There are ups and downs to using them, and the lids only last for one or two cannings, but the cost (free) is pretty appealing. There are a lot of naysayers to the practice in the US, but (as I'm told) it's quite common in some countries such as Australia - and I've never had any issues with canning that way. Big thing to be careful of is to not shock the jars with super hot contents when the jars are cold. The jars can be cracked that way.

Ashley, I’m very interested in what you had to say in this video. Do you pay for water in Canada? We do here in Western Australia and where I am in can get very hot. I’ve had a few doomsaying-negative-Nellies saying the cost of watering a vege garden negates the savings from canning your own produce. I’d like your opinion on that. Also, I went to your website to see the recipe for the canned coleslaw. I can’t find the recipes anywhere. Could you direct me? I don’t mind paying for it if it’s a buy in your shop thing. 🥰 I was fortunate enough to have to help my mum ever since I can remember through canning season. I hated it at the time but I’m very grateful now. I have a large family and we love coleslaw so I’d really like to know the how’s as well as the how much-es!!! 🥰 Thank you for sharing. 🌹Rosie of Oz🇦🇺 & 🐶Omega the Cavalier🐶 My dog - she likes to garden, cook and watch TH-cam with me!!!

Depends on where you are here in Canada. I don't pay for water because I'm on a well in the country and also collect rain water. At the city house I moved out of last year we did pay for water, but it wasn't terribly expensive. That said, where I live can be very arid and we go through a lot of droughts and heat waves. I implemented a lot of things like mulching and using drip hose to save water, and plan on doing the same here even now that my water is free.
