Blata tal Melh Trekking Bahrija Malta

  • Today's adventure takes us to l-Blata tal-Melh, which translates as "the rock of salt", due to the salt-pans here and lies on the coast of Bahrija behind the area known as L-Imtahleb. The stretch of coast lies just south of Ras ir-Raheb, just off Fomm ir-Riħ Bay. The only access is on foot via a45 -minute trek down steep uneven ground. The trek gets particularly tricky nearer the bottom. Some say it was an Italian businessman who produced salt there and he had commissioned the work. The stairs would enable workers to carry salt down to a waiting boat that would take it to Gnejna.
Apparently, the staircase was also used as easy access for people working on the salt-pans, as using a boat was easier than walking, even if there were no sacks of salt to carry.
Of course, you want to see this place. It is certainly off the beaten track but well-worth the effort. Apart from the interest created by the human footprint, the location has very unique characteristics that give it a unique beauty on the whole island.

Amazing views. Many memories of this place, been there three times for sure. About two years ago we trekked and slept there and took some milky way photos since that is the darkest part of Malta with the lowest light pollution.
That stairs my father, when he was younger, used to go with their boat from Wied iż-Żurrieq to fish and collect salt and they used that stair to climb.
Also that is the same place some years ago two guys were completely washed away and ended in a nearest place and were rescued, thankfully they were still alive.

This is very beautiful indeed. I've been wanting to visit Blata tal-Melh but don't know how to access the place. We recently managed to go to Ras id-Dawwara through Miġra l-Ferħa by bike and needless to say the views were absolutely breathtaking. Is there another way to access Blata tal-Melh from Bahrija by bike? Obviously not all the way down but at least we can take turns to walk down and explore the place or lock the bikes in Bahrija if it is not too far.
