  • This is a music video for my video game cover of the Dungeon Theme from the Original Legend of Zelda game for the NES. I tried to blend the original 8-bit sounds from the NES with live instrumentation. The arrangement was is also a nod to one of the coolest songs ever made "Ghost Town" by the Specials:

The Legend of Zelda, originally released in Japan as The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu,[b][8][c] is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo.[9] The first game of The Legend of Zelda series, it is set in the fantasy land of Hyrule and centers on an elf-like boy named Link, who aims to collect the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom in order to rescue Princess Zelda from Ganon.[10] The player controls Link from a top-down perspective and navigates throughout the overworld and dungeons, collecting weapons, defeating enemies and uncovering secrets along the way.[11]
Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, it was originally released in Japan as a launch title for the Family Computer Disk System in February 1986.[12] More than a year later, North vbeing the first home console game to include an internal battery in the US for saving data.[13] This version was later released in Japan in 1994 under the title The Hyrule Fantasy: Zelda no Densetsu 1.[d][5] The game was ported to the GameCube[14] and Game Boy Advance,[5] and was available via the Virtual Console on the Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.[15] It was also one of 30 games included in the NES Classic Edition system, and is available on the Nintendo Switch through the Nintendo Switch Online service.
The Legend of Zelda was a critical and commercial success for Nintendo. The game sold over 6.5 million copies, launched a major franchise, and has been regularly featured in lists of the greatest video games of all time. A sequel, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, was first released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System less than a year after its predecessor, and numerous additional successors and spinoffs have been released in the decades since its debut.

This piece always held a lot of mystery for me. I remember stumbling across the first arpeggio by chance on my Casio keyboard as a kid and wanting to understand how to play it. It was a fun process to take it apart, figure out exactly what was going on, and come up with an arrangement for it. One day I just started feeling that 16th note-y drum groove under the melody, and ran with that idea. I recorded myself playing a loop into a cassette machine, recorded the original 8-bit Square Wave synth parts, then filled out the rest of the arrangement with bass, guitars, and keys.

Aww yeah, that fusion of live instruments with 8-bit sounds is a thing of beauty. The silky-smooth flute interplaying with that chiptune crunch. The winding synth and resonant guitar. Dungeoneering has never felt so comfortable.
(and hey, I'd never heard "Ghost Town" before, either; you've given me TWO great new songs to listen to!)

I love this. I like your improv riffs on this song because the original can get a bit repetitive over a long stretch and this keeps it fresh. Also I wanted to mention how much I like your video editing and how well it fits with your songs. I like the memey bits too. Overall fantastic work again.

Thank you so much! Yeah, one of the challenges with VGM covers is trying to find tasteful ways to expand on them. I was pleasantly surprised at how interesting the original was, so it gave me a lot of leeway to experiment.
The feedback on the video editing is much appreciated. That’s another challenge with making VGM covers 😅 so I’m very happy to know people are enjoying that element. Thanks so much for the support.

Thank you! It will be on Spotify this Summer. I also have 2 other EPs on there now, and will be releasing stuff more regularly starting next month (VGM cover licensing can be a headache). I’ll post news about releases here and on my other socials.
