The reason for the Richard Kelly pseudonym was that Laymons UK publisher in the early 1980s (NEL) turned the book down so his agent shopped it around to other publishers and WH Allen brought it. To avoid contracual confusion the Richard Kelly name was used. Although published in 1987 the book was actually finished in January 1983. Just reread the book myself and thoroughly enjoyed it and your review.

Man, ten years ago there was absolutely no love for Laymon on youtube. I'm happy to see new videos on his work.

I was pleasantly surprised by his treatment of the families and especially kids in this book. The beginning was a bit unusual and disorienting in the way he simultaneously introduced everybody. The camping stuff was surprisingly good and never boring. Wish part three was longer and presented more dangers, showed more of what they were up against. And Just Before Dawn really is a good movie in the same vein.
