It’s a great album. Lyrically brave and direct, structurally challenging, aesthetically noisy. Yet, expertly executed and surprisingly catchy. Of course, it’s not for everyone, as no art is. I’ve described it as a jazz-punk-hip-pop album.
@@SincerelyHannah In fact, Shameika and Fiona have actually contacted each other, Shameika Stepny has been a voice in underground hip-hop for ages, and they've collaborated on a new song, Shameika Said, which can be found here: th-cam.com/video/W_YIsUG3r8I/w-d-xo.html
Shameika was a girl she went to school with ... She was a real person ... I'm a HUGE FA fan ... Have been since "Tidal"... I love this lady's music more and more with each album ...
I keep hoping to find a review of this album to matches mine. I HATED this album beyond words. Also did not care for The Idler Wheel either. Love her first 3 albums but will never listen to the last 2 ever again. Still waiting to hear what people actually like about this album beyond technical or political things. When i listen to music I want to enjoy the words and music. I'm not listening to it for political messages, or experimentation, or production value, etc. Also in just about every song she repeats the chorus over and over. Way too repetitive.
valid points! While I did enjoy this album for it's experimentation and production value, I think what I really loved was her lyrical stories and her vocal performance. She puts sooo much emotion and depth into her voice. But it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea and I myself am not always in the mood for this style music :)
I have all of her albums and think each album has been better than the one before. The Idler Wheel for me is perfection. However, this album is absolute garbage and I cancelled my purchase. Boring.
What exactly you’re looking for? Songwriting of every song is so good. Beautiful melodies, very catchy vocal performances and catchy & thoughtful lyrics. I guess the only thing you didn’t like is it’s repetitive choruses.
@@vigneshwarandevanathan2594 The repetition is a big part of it, but I just didn't find the songs engaging. There is not one song on When The Pawn that I don't love. Only one or two that is just alright on Tidal and EM, so clearly I loved her stuff up until TIW. I just haven't enjoyed the last two albums at all. That tends to happen with a lot of artists though. After a while, they start doing new things that don't appeal to me. I don't know.

Yes, couldn't agree more!
@@SincerelyHannah And yes, Shameika is a real person.
No. It just jazz fusion..not hip pop. Wtf
She said in an interview that Shameika is a real person.
