Thanks for speaking out about depression. I was diagnosed with chronic depression a few years ago and like you say, it's something we learn to live with, as it's with us all the time. Music is but one of the many things that can bring us joy. Thanks for being here. Cari Saluti, brother. 23.

Oh, by the way Dereck... your comments about the Stella Vander and her fellow female vocalists, certainly ring true with me... as I watched a special concert from the last couple of years, that Magma assembled to a small scale audience, in which the vocalists carried most of the power and intensity of the music!.
I was so impressed by this arrangement of vocalists, that I had to give them a silent clap at the end!.

Thank you for sharing your Magma collection. I was lucky to find the 10 disc live collection Konzert Zuhnd some years ago at a great price (I'd never be able to afford the full price much less collector prices) and have never looked back. My copy of newest arrives tomorrow!!!!
Music and reading keep the soul alive. Blessings to you and thank you for your posts.

Thanks for showing all those Magma LPs, Dereck. I've never heard them but I remember JJ Burnel of The Stranglers raving about them. Like you, I also sold a bunch of records in a moment of madness. I'll never forgive myself!

hi dereck! a couple days ago, a friend's recommendation pushed me to properly dig into black midi. i was pleasantly surprised to find that you talked about black midi in the video you posted the very next day! your consistent praise of them has undoubtedly been a big factor in the space they take up in my subconscious, and i'm really glad that i finally checked them out! so thank you, for supporting music new and old!

    Good Afternoon Dereck
Wow what a Magma collection. Bought the Eno album Film Music you recommended some time back, thank you. I also like the 45rpm copies of "Discreet Music", "On Land" & "Apollo". They do sound very good played at 45rpm. However, I am still after a very quiet vinyl copy of "Neroli". Dereck, I hear what you say regarding depression, we all suffer from it at some point in our lives: although for me that's where music can be a comforting distraction from that "Black Dog" as depression is often called. My three fav things to do are; music, reading and surfing, I find these so enjoyable. Luckily, we have great beaches here on the East Coast of Australia. Dereck, Stay safe & go well.

I saw where Attahk was on a short list of Charles Hayward favorites.
It might be "poorly recorded" but, to me Inedits is my all-time favorite Magma LP.
We get to see a different, far more violent, and stripped down image of the band.
Side A's Jannick Top compositions peel the paint off of the wall -truly amazing.
I remeber getting into Magma 25 years ago (I'm 43. This was before TH-cam or even Napster. You made "blind-faith purchases based on reviews and word of mouth ) and starting with 1001°C and MDK and being blown away by what they were doing but thinking it wasn't what I thought I'd find. Then I listened to De Futura and I heard what I was looking for.
Jannick Top's name stood out and so I concentrated on that name and that lead me to Inedits and it's A side. Seeing name next to those classically derived, almost cryptic song titles told me I was in for something beyond expectations - holy shit was that true.
The interplay between Vander and Top is second to none.
There's a video on YT from 08 or 09 where they're doing KMX XII (Vander is on drums, I don't remeber the bassist) and it's pretty amazing as well.
If someone asked me about Magma I think I would tell them to listen to Udu Wudu, Attahk, and especially Inedits before anything else.

I said goodbye to some people last weekend that didn’t get where I was coming from and actually chuckled at me! Soooooo I got up from the table at the restaurant and said .....”you two have a blessed life goodbye” and I feel good about it, a weight lifted from my shoulders, it was a burden that I need not carry...see ya D👋🏻. Namaste my friend 🙏🏻✨

I envy your collection! But I do at least share in your exceptional tastes! (By the way, in consideration of your final personal comments, one of the reasons that I love Magma is that their movement into the light, into positive energy, is always hard-won, always pulled out of darkness and the potential for despair. Their music can be some of the ugliest at times. But--like Coltrane--when the sweetness emerges from it, it's real and pure, not pretense and shallow manufacture. I think that deep connection to spirit is why the Vanders can keep going at their advanced ages. Christian can't blow us away with raw speed and power like he used to, but he's still full of soul.... ) Be strong, friend! I love that you're sharing your love of the magic.

Hey Dereck, I thought it was interesting that when I heard 'Black Midi' for the first time, just the other day, I subconsciously knew, that there was a point of reference that I could attach to what I was hearing, but it was in such a different context, that it may as well have been beamed in from some other civilization in time and space!.
However, the two references that I came up with... which by the way are completely different!... were King Crimson, and Magma.
Somehow you too, seem to have mentioned these in the context of 'Black Midi', which I thought was rather interesting! (it wouldn't be the first time either, that we had some random intersecting thoughts like this!).
As for 'Black Midi', if I had to sum up the spirit and attitude of that band in one word, it would be 'Frenetic', but very reactionary... everyone plays to the strength of the whole, which is where the magic comes.
I couldn't quite say the same for King Crimson... but at their best, they do manage to produce it.
But Magma certainly has this in common with 'Black Midi', along with the undeniable intensity!.

Derk- I have 82 Cds by Magma, along with 200 live recordings. I am one of those crazy collectors, and have Magma on LP, cassette, CD and DVD. I have 2 large boxes of articles about the band, including the book on Fender bass by Klaus Blasquiz and other books on the band. I wrote an article about them in Option in 1988 (interviewed CV and SV) and then published a longer one on Sea of Tranquility. I met Christian and Phillip Bussonett when they were in Chicago in 2016. I saw them live in 1999, 2015 and 2016. Here, enjoy this absolutely crazed solo from the late James Mac Gaw (RIP) (from Kontarkosz): th-cam.com/video/1eGgXa360-E/w-d-xo.html
