Maiden Voyage is a single movement work of multiple scenes, that gives it the feel of multi-movement work. It is meant to depict a voyage that is taken by the quintet, they start with a call that brings them out to sea, they then experience rough waters, and more tension. The trombone then takes part in the singing of a longing song, which could depict a member of the crew longing to be back on shore, until the music is interrupted by the depiction, and sighting of an underwater monster is shown through the aggressive tuba. Finally, after all that we have witnessed - we return to the shore, and the final chord that fades away, mimics the initial call to sea heard before.
