That Bruin/ Habs game with the score shown as 5-1, would end up Montreal: 7; Boston: 5 at the Boston Garden and would end up being one of the greatest Playoff upsets of all-time, with the Habs winning the Cup in Jean Beliveau’s final season ( he won 10 Cups as a player).
Long story short, Parent's mask was returned to him in 2012. He authenticated it and gave it back to the owner, who said he'd give it to the HHOF posthumously.
Hearing a referee on a live mike (Lloyd Gilmour) at about 48:00) was most unusual for a broadcast in 1971; I can't recall another example from that era.
Bill Hewitt's famous last words at about the 6:41 mark of the video: "The referee and the two linesmen have done a sensational job of keeping this game under control." At about the 28:28 mark and even more so at about the 42-minute mark comes the brawling that resulted in a record $16,950 in fines for the 28 players involved, with Vic Hadfield throwing Bernie Parent's mask into the crowd. The recipient of the mask somehow managed to make off with it despite being surrounded by police; what brilliant work by the NYPD. If I'm not mistaken, the only playing time for Guy Trottier was during the few seconds late in the game that he went from the penalty box to the bench after serving someone else's penalty; and the only ice time for Brian Glennie came during the brawls. As late as 1971, people dressed up to go to hockey games.
Although it is great to be able to revisit games of the past, I wish people with recorders had used the fastest speed (SP on VHS machines, for instance) rather than the slowest (SLP on VHS machines). The similar boundaries applied to BETA machines. Of course, it was much easier to fit the entire game on a slow speed on the recorder, but, obviously, a tape at slow speed was terrible to watch after a decade. Oh well, something is better than nothing.
I’m watching and a guy Horton for the Rangers scored against the leafs. There must be a new guy in the league named Horton. I’m watching the game after that and I’m thinking that guy Horton is a good strong player. Later the announcer calls him Tim Horton and I realize it’s the same Tim Horton but playing against the Leafs. I looked him up and he was 41 years old here. Why did Toronto trade him?
Particularly Vic Hadfield who would walk out on Team Canada a year later in the Summit Series. He was mad because he wasn't being played because he couldn't keep up with the faster Russian players. So he left Russia and sulked back to the NY Rangers.
Yes, agreed. In the 1975 playoffs between Montreal and Vancouver, Babe had to sit there and watch his son, Tracy, get destroyed in a fight with Larry Robinson. He didn't have a WORD to say !! 8D

No wonder I fell in love with hockey this very season at age 11
Thanks for this game, buddy! I'd love to see some more Leafs stuff.
Thank you so much! Truely appreciated.
Boy I miss those games
Good stuff .love old time hockey
The ad at about the 18-minute mark of the video talking about "Pinto quality" hasn't aged well.

Thanks for Part 2! Wonder if Parent ever got his mask back...

@@nhlovertimes730 Thanks for this! I remember watching this incident live when I was a kid.

Great observations!

Tapes were expensive!

Not Jim Gregory's finest moment. I forget why Horton was traded, but it happened the year before.
Lol this video proves that the Rangers could not take a loss well

Oh my gosh for once I actually feel bad for the refs. 30:48 They were hardcore
Don't give it back!
And they lived maplelaughs ever after
Dale rolf doppelganger abe Lincoln
Hockey was so irrelevant in ny back then that playoff games ar msg would start close to 9 o'clock so not to conflict with circus 🙄
How can there be no penalty for rangers player to throw face mask in crowd?
What would be the penalty? Unsportsmanlike conduct? Refs back then would have said, "protect your equipment at all times."
It was Hadfield who threw the mask and he had already racked up about 20 minutes in penalties with only 5 or so to play.
Wow Babe pratt was a terrible commentator

That's Babe between periods, but Bob Goldham as the colour commentator during the live action.
Sure was. Bumbling boozer no doubt
