CHANGING OUR ENGINES: the hardest part | YANMAR to NANNI [Ep126 RED SEAS]

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 20 มิ.ย. 2024
- This is the final stage of our double engine refit as we replace our old Yanmar 4JH4E engines with brand new Nanni N4.50s. We have built our own fibreglass engine beds, aligned both engines and now we just need to connect up all the fuel and water hoses and install new consoles up at the helm. We are so close to the end of this project and we can't wait to turn the engines on and see if they work! Fingers crossed!

📖 Our Story 📖
We're Iain and Brioni [The Reds] a couple of redheaded Scots who sold everything we own and moved halfway round the world to buy a boat that we could call home. We have a habit of finding ourselves in the most unusual circumstances, but that’s what makes life interesting! We live in search of the most remote places to live and sail so hit subscribe and join us on this adventure!
One of the Yanmar engines on our Leopard 47 catamaran completely died on our Pacific crossing last year so we've been limping along for 11 months with only one. Now we're in Tahiti to remove both engines and replace them with brand new Nanni N4.50s. The extra challenge is that we're doing all the world ourselves, while the boat is still in the water, and it's cyclone season!

Tune in next week when a critical malfunction launches Iain out of the engine bay and into the water where a pair of Tahitian Sea lions bring his semi-conscious body back to the dock.
Great stuff.
Wait….are you a patron with early access?!?! How could you possibly know that’s what happens 😂
@@RedSeas A patron or someone with a gift of seeing future events.
Awww, you got me! I wasn't expecting a cliffhanger! I should have realized there was a high probability of it. Looking forward to the next episode!
Well.. it had to be done. 😀 next weeks episode will make it all worth it. I promise. Going to be so much fun sharing what happened next.
Nnnoooooo......left hanging again😂😂.
Seriously though well done you two
Thank you! And sorry we couldn’t help ourselves. It just had to be done
Oh you lovely pair of ^&*^*! That cliff hanger got me proper shouting at the screen "nOoOoOOOOooooOOoooO!" Well played. Seriously well done you two! Can't wait to see the next one!
😜 sorry mate! I mean it had to be done right? Trust me, things are never as simple as we hope they would be so next week should be a really fun episode. Sit tight.
@@RedSeas Oh 100% :) Can't wait!
You probably know this by now, heat expands iron metall, cold shrinks it 😅 regarding the bolt that was stuck. Just spent a couple of weeks binging all of your episodes, and oh my, you've been through a bit! Inspirational it is to see you coming over to the other side of any obstacles thrown your way.
Hi, thanks for taking the time to check out the adventure. It’s been a wild ride for sure. I guess we always figure that the tough moments will turn into great stories one day so why not try and enjoy the moment…not that we manage that every time. There have been some pretty tricky moments. 😂
..oh Man,,, talk about a 'Cliff Hanger',,,, lol,,,, good job on leaving us wanting more,,,, I predict all is good and it was successful start,,,,
Who doesn’t love a cliff hanger?!? It will be a fun episode to share next week. Perhaps we should open the polls on what happens when the key is turned?
I love the fact that obviously you love hitchhiker as much as I do what with you installing improbability drives 🥰😅😂🤣🤣
Absolutely! It’s full of life advice. And as you can see, the probability of our engines working first time is 200341 against. I mean…we installed them! At least we worked out how to use the wooden scissors by now.
@@RedSeas you guys are so funny.
You guys are masters of the cliffhanger 😂
If those engines do start Nanni could not buy better publicity.
Really hope they started hopefully we'll find out next week ❤
Hang in there. We are sooooo close. It’s going to be a fun week
Community help better than chat gpt AI 👍🏼
Absolutely!!
Thanks for the cliff hanger guys, I think everyone is going to be very excited to her them Roar!
Can’t wait till next week!!!
Cdn. Dave
Here’s hoping they roar first time 😀
I mean…patreon knows. Just saying 😜
Great cliff hanger
It just had to be done. Sorry 😀
@@RedSeas something to look forward to next Sunday
Let me know if you need anymore of the screen material I sent you
Man that material has been soooo useful. Bri haven’t stopped making things. I think the only thing slowing her down has been lack of solar power to run the machine 😂
We will absolutely let you know if we run short. I’m nervous that we end up putting the whole boat in a big sock of fabric at this rate 😜
Check out those two back panels tho! They are so good at getting the cockpit temperature down while we can still see what’s going on around us. Need to find some more fixings so we can finish the saloon windows tho.
Who doesn't love a good game of "Lift and Wiggle!" 🤣😂
🤣
the gold colored u-shaped mounting bracket has a dimple under it that is meant to go in the slot just behind the black end of the main part of the cable, about 1" to the left. this ensures that the exterior part of the cable stays in line with the interior push-pull part of the cable as well as keeping the exterior part stationary
Ok great. Thank you for the clarification. I will have to jump in and see if I can sort that. Nothing like learning on the job 😜 appreciate you taking the time to explain it for us.
Yes, I noticed that as well on the video shot of the throttle cable.
Clever cliff hangar! Nice work!
Cheers. Sorry to leave you hanging but next week will be a great ep
What a Cliff Hanger! We have to wait a week to see Iain get blown out of the back of the boat! 😆
So sorry you are going to have to sit tight. 😀
Now I have to wait a week to hear those babies purr.
Great job guys.
Sit tight mate. It’s worth it. Nothing is ever as simple as we’d like it to be
You can go off people you know, what an ending.
😜 yeah, sorry but we just had to
We just have to do………. This farce is mostly funny and has their complications 😂
Just a few loose ends to tie up right? 😂
The joy or doing things your self. When you finally get to turn it on for the first time and find out if you did everything right or not. You might have some priming issues but with how simple those engines are you shouldn't have much issues with. Air in the fuel system can be a challenge, though air in the raw water system might cause a few hick ups as well. Would like to know how that anti-siphon system works and why it was suggested to add it. Well until next week have fun and stay cool.
Yeah, it’s a bit like sitting an exam after weeks of studying. If we did it all right then all should be well but if not then we have a real head scratcher.
As for the anti syphon loop, it’s positioned at the output of the impeller pump. The idea being that we essentially have a gravity feed of raw water “primed” for the cooling system. This way the engine will always have raw water at startup. If air gets into the thruhull as a result of air passing along the hull at speed etc, it is bled out this way and we get a pretty clear indication of any raw water blockage in a visible way. It’s belts and braces for sure but we figured why not treat these puppies well.
OMG, how can you do that to us? Gosh, you guys are not only good in replacing engines but putting suspens in your videos as well. LOL. Perfect, and, I may be wrong but I am sure those guys will start right away!
Well, it had to be done right? We honestly had no idea what was about to happen so figured everyone could enjoy that same feeling for a bit. Next week will be a fun episode to share with TH-cam. Hopefully our patrons can keep the results hush hush until then 😜
Hi guys, all I can say every time I see your videos I get so excited because I know it’s going to be a lot of fun. I just really love and appreciate you know you’ve put a lot of fun into life. Keep up the good work Cliff from Australia
Cheers Cliff. Our goal is to put a smile on your face so hopefully we manage that. It’s all good fun and we just have to go with the flow..even when that isn’t always the direction we were hoping. Thanks for watching and following the adventure.
Ooooooo!° That was cold!!!!!😂😂😂
Until next week, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii! Cheers 🍻
It just had to be done 😂
Love to see the amount of subscribers going up every week
It’s been unreal! We are so close to the elusive 10k. Please do keep spreading the word. If everyone who washes were to invite a friend, that would be crazy
@@RedSeas always do love you guys humor and reality makes me look forward to Sundays. One of these days I hope to meet you guys in person.
You two are evil😂now we have to wait till next week,as always great video
Yeah, sorry about that. But it’s never as simple as we’d like. Next week will be a brilliant episode 😀
I love the "DreamCatcher" shirt!!! We were on board her just after you hitched a ride to USVI.
No way! That’s cool. Jake and Steph are legends. I hope you had a great time with them.
Why do I feel like eating spaghetti right now? 😂🤣😂
🤤
No doubt it fires up. You've done a great job here.
Here’s hoping. 🤞🏼
Shame you guys couldn't have painted the engine areas white beforehand, would look alot nicer. Good job, what a cliffhanger you left us in, lol.
It would have been fun to paint white instead of the green it is currently but it would probably have turned into a full bilge repaint through the whole boat (never know where to draw the line). Still, it cleaned up pretty well and the new silver insulation makes the whole engine bay much nicer to be in.
Didn't see you bleed the injectors, so next week will be interesting!
Ah yes, we did actually bleed the whole system but must have missed that part off the edit. Sorry. Good catch tho
Cool so bouth engines are now installed good job
Yeah! Super pleased that they both fit. Just need them to fire up
Love a start button
Yeah baby! Feels like the future.
Talk about a cliffhanger!!
Such a good cliff hanger!! 😀
No way... what a end 😅. Well done ✅ with your new engines. Looking forward to hearing the sound of the engines next week.
I know. It had to be done tho next weeks episode is going to be a fun one to share.
what...! cliff hanger. Your guys are awesome.
Yeah, It just had to be done. All becomes clear next week. We love a good cliff hanger after all. 😀
Ahhhhh, it's a cliffhanger!
Hang on. Don’t let gooooo! Next week will be so much fun to share
Hi guys, been watching you only a couple of months. Really enjoyed each episode. Good luck with your new engines. Keep up with the great TH-cam. Ian from Berkshire ❤
Cheers for following along. The more people that hear about the channel, the better chance we can keep this adventure going. It’s been one wild ride so far and with these new engines, we are super excited to see where we end up next.
Excellent editing on this video....great job!
Cheers! We try really hard to tell the story as it happened and the editing can be the hardest part funny enough.
I would have seen if the old cables could be re-used. Save sooooo much work.
They were is pretty bad condition and the new looks are far better quality.
Good on ya, ended it at the exciting moment
It just had to be done tho right?
And after they start, I assume celebration at the restaurant at the end of the universe?
😜 only if I can steal a black space ship that is just so black that everything is written in black on a black surface with a small black sign written in black that tells me not to push any buttons!
Ok anyone else reading that response may be a lotto concerned. Now where’s my towel?!?
Cheers guys..
Thanks! Another step closer to working engines! 😀
Wtf - You did it to us again…now I have to wait a full week to see if it went bang or great…😢
Sit tight. It’s never as simple as we want it to be. 😀
@@RedSeas I’m starting to twitch sitting still now. It’s like a drug addiction….🤣🤪
😂 sorry…..not sorry? 🤣
To make that dark look good get a sheet of ply and stick it over that area and cut new holes out. Would look good once coated in epoxy and given a sanding.
“That dark”?
@@RedSeas dash. Aka where the instrument cluster lives.
That’s one idea. We have to play around. But ply with some glass over it would probably work best.
I've seen other channels use nylon/plastic cutting boards to mount controls to.. cheap and not bad looking. also be super sure you have the electrical grounding correct..
Yeah, it’s a great solution. Our helm display is actually mounted like that. Perhaps we need to look around the kitchen departments of some stores for new cutting board 🤔 we were thinking about glassing it or perhaps even using our 3d printer to make something. But cutting board is a reliable option.
Nice work team red seas. Great to see how competent you both are. Time to buy two pairs of safety glasses though.
You missed the “in” off that word I’m sure of it 😂 yeah, Red Seas safety is usually restricted to sea going activities. We just improvise our way thru projects like this.
No I stand by competent. You are doing a good job and learning good techniques. Just don’t get injured by skimping on some basic safety procedure.
Hay gadge what was that ending, I wanted to see fly out the back of the boat. HAHAHA
😂 there’s still time for that. 😜
No you did not!😡😂🤣
No way… I was NOT expecting that one😢
😜 well…couldn’t help it really could we? 😂
Great team 🎉 congrats
Thank you! It’s been one heck of a ride. Learning so much.
Ya couldn't tell us if it started? What a cliff hanger.
Nothings ever that simple after all!
Please double clamp every hose and retighten after the first few short heat cycles.
That’s exactly what we did 😀 the guys at Nanni were super quick to pick up on that too and shot us a message asking that we doubled up all the clips. Great eyes
would have been helpful if he said that the reason it was incorrect was because the slot on the end of the throttle cable is supposed to fit under the hold-down clamp on the engine
Ah interesting. The alignment of the cable bracket to the left and the throttle cable would have me think it fits to the external face of the throttle arm. Perhaps I will have a play with that and see if it swings behind. That’s what you mean?
I have redone my dash and put a piece of black shinny perspecs to cover the holes as the dash
That’s a cool idea. We have been between using cutting boards or 3d printing something. Bri has considered just going all out and glassing/gel coating it to make it look really nice but we will see how that goes.
Life the universe and everything. Fire ‘‘em up!
Donate for a Dream
Nailed it.
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow, that is the formula. Air, Fuel, spark, glowplugs GO!!!!I'm very impressed with these Nani Aussie Engines, top job.🇦🇺👍🤣 That was really Cruel to do that at the end😭
Yeah, if fools like us can fit them then they must be good! They have been incredible to work with and the engines are super solid. We get a feeling that this will be a very happy relationship.
Ah well done 😅
However i think you need to polish your understanding of a indirect diesel.
Swirl chambers are generally used in the kubotas. Its worth understanding, however, that is just my opinion 😊 well done both of you.
Cheers! Yeah there is so much we don’t know and it’s been fun learning on the job. Certainly going to keep figuring things out as we get to know these blue beasts.
hahahaha ... who taught you to do that ! ....now I have a week to wait ! unless you do a special one ???? DO IT ! LMAO
😂 yeah sorry. Just had to be done. We love a good cliffhanger after all.
Boooooooooooo what a cliff hanger!!!! that's worse than those soaps on TV, that's really mean stopping your excellent video there. 😁😁😁
🤞first go
😂 I guess we had your attention then? Trust me, it will be worth it for next weeks episode.
@@RedSeas 👏👏👏 can't wait
AAAahhhhh, a cliff hanger!
😂 we couldn’t help ourselves. We just had to do it. Next weeks episode will be a fun one to share. Trust me.
@@RedSeas I love how you two do your videos, the camera work, scripts and the editing - fantastic. You really make me feel like I'm there watching all your adventures. . . . I even love the anticipation of the cliff hanger!
Wow thank you. We really love sharing the adventure. So pleased to have you following along.
Best to have 2 clamps on each end of your exhaust hoses…
Absolutely. The guys at Nanni spotted that and gave us a shout to double up on all the clamps. We went round and “snugged” up all the hoses before double clamping them. 😀
Doe these new engines support NEMA2000?
They aren’t common rail however we have a trick to that. We share a bit about it next week but we should probably do an episode on it or something.
3-2-1….. noooooooooo! You rotten bu99ers! That’s so not fair. :-). Good job Team Red.
😂 just had to have a bit of fun. Trust me, it’s worth it for next weeks episode
What the? Another week of suspenders.
Sorry! I mean we just had to do it. You will see why next week I promise!
WHAT! You stopped at the button push you bastards.
😂 well, it had to be done. Trust me when you see next weeks episode you will understand why
@@RedSeas You sound just like Debbie Robinson back in high school. She would say to me "wait till next Saturday it will be great"........ next Saturday never came and neither did I. Be happy, be safe
😄😄😄😄😄👍👍👍👍👍
Cheers! 🍻
Engine will not run without AIR ...... you missed that on your diagram .... also air-filter needs to be cleaned and checked often for reliable power.
You’re right on the money there. Yes, I kind of overlooked that air was integral to combustion. We have blowers in each engine bay to pull in a bit of extra fresh air and circulate in the space but I always forget they are there. 😜
Those 90's, not good. Need sweeps
90’s? Not sure I follow.
24:30 incorrectly installed
Any hints how you would install it? It works well enough and looks good to us.
@@RedSeas the bracket/clamp the one with two bolts is supposed to clamp over the groove on the cable, if you look closely there is a key on the clamp this is supposed to fit into the groove further back on the cable. Hard to explane as not able to post pictures on yt . This will fail if not addressed, if you need further details let me know where I can message you with pics. Cheers
