It was this tune along with Time is Tight that convinced me (as a 15 year old), to sell my drums and buy an L100 & a 147 Leslie. That was back in late '73...Best move I ever made!! ☮
Steve Cropper was never underrated.. He was respected by everyone in the business, and by millions worldwide.. So was Duck Dunn, and Al Jackson jr.. I know Anton Fig is the drummer here before anyone comments on my mentioning AJ jr..
Unsung hero of music, his skills were more than just on the guitar, as a producer, A&R man, hell even as the cleaner he had an input on music being where it is.
Booker T sure as hell is one of the very best users of the interaction between Hammond and the mighty Leslie… just gets the balance right and does not over use the fast setting. Awesome track….
Rest in peace al Jackson Junior who was slain way before his time, one the best drummer in the world, at the time, him and his kids grew up within my Memphis neighborhood with me,we all loved him so.
On this day in 1968 {November 9th} Booker T. and the M.G.s' "Hang'em High" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #9 and spent 18 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #35 on the Billboard's R&B chart... Was composed by Dominic Frontiere for the 1968 Clint Eastwood movie of the same name... Hugo Montenegro covered it in 1969; his version peaked at #59 on the Canadian RPM Tracks chart... R.I.P. Mr. Montenegro {1925-1981}...
In '72 I got a Hammond M3 and Leslie 910 speaker with foot controls. This was the first song I played on it, followed by Green Onions and Time is Tight. Love this song. Great cover of the Movie theme (Clint Eastwood, Pat Hingle, Inger Stevens) by Dominic Frontiere. Back then, music was performed by musicians. Interesting how modern "music" features massive amounts of sampling from 1960's-1970's music. Kids need to learn how to play instruments again.
I put this record (45 rpm) on the box before leaving for school (6th grade) and would not make it out the door - the song stayed on repeat for hours, and of course I ended up hooking school because I could not break away from listening to this tune.
On this day in 1968 {December 28th} Booker T. & the MGs performed at the Miami Pop Festival in Hallandale, Florida... At the time the group's "Hang 'Em High"* was at #40 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and six weeks later on February 2nd, 1969 it would peaked at #9 {for 2 weeks} and spent 18 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #35 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart... Between 1962 and 1971 they had seventeen Top 100 records; with two making the Top 10, their other Top 10 record was "Green Onions", which peaked at #3 {for 1 week} on September 23rd, 1962... * Hugo Montenegro's original version of “Hang ‘Em High” peaked at #82 {for 2 weeks} on July 7th, 1968...
I was 17 when this single was released on Stax Records.....the 60's, aah, yes.....How we have progressed, J-Z, Coolio, Snoop Dogg.....Damn you youngsters...get this...black music uses to be music...witness Hang em High!....just sounds racist doesnt it?? HANG EM? get the hell over yourself and realize that the best times in music are behind ALL of us.....enjoy these and recall the glory days. Can you picture listening to this boffing your girl in your GTO drinking $.99/ 6 pk beer? I CAN!!
The climatic keyboard riff was a melody taken from 'And the Address' by Deep Purple, released 3 months prior to Hang 'em High. Listen to Deep Purple's song for the riff at 1.34, 2.01, 3.02 and 4.01, all done by guitar. The studio recording of Hang 'em High plays the same riff 6 times 0.33, 1.02, 1.31, 1.59, 2.27, 2.55, and sounds fantastic in the way each climax get stronger and stronger from 1st to 6th, with a beautiful crisp keyboard sound. Praise to Booker T & The MG's for making this fantastic Score in the movie Hang em High.
Booker T. Jones is a no nonsense, no frills musician. He needs no smoke, mirrors, or fireworks; just his organ. He sits down as if it were nothing, then hammers out a performance that will echo through the centuries.
WOOWIE~~!!! THE CLASSIC BOOKER T AND THE MGs..LET'S NOT FORGET DONALD "DUCK" ON THE 5 STRING STRATOCASTER BASS!!! CLAASSIC MY MAN claaaaaaaaaassic my maaaan~!!!!
avery day when three trucks were in back of the saxs we used to go in and watch Booker T & MGS due there thing and they played all the songs for hours at a time now kids this we in my home town MEMPHIS,TN twice jerry lee and the man would stop by E L V I S
@kutbaag Musicians of the day WERE clean, or they didn't do gigs. They had to pay serious attention to the actual craft of their professions. That's why the classics hold up to this day.
This is the theme song for "The Soul Show" every Sat at 2:00 pm on 91.3 WYEP FM Pittsburgh. I Believe you can stream their station live from their website. If you want just do a search or two on Google to find it.
This show's location is mislabeled due to the name of the Japanese television program which videoed and televised it, "Live From New York". It was actually taped in 1991 at The Strand in Redondo Beach, Ca. I know, because... I... was... there! (Losing my edge, indeed).
Best recording of Hang'em High I've ever heard. ❤️ Love it! ❣️
I started listening to Booker T in my 20's, I'm now in my mid 70's, in 2023.. 😊
agree 100%
Booker T is awesome. No showy display, or crazy costume, no pyrotechnics, just pure music!
They earned their money the hard way, they actually played music and well too.
Booker T. Jones, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Steve "The Colonel" Cropper; it just doesn't get any better than this.
It was this tune along with Time is Tight that convinced me (as a 15 year old), to sell my drums and buy an L100 & a 147 Leslie. That was back in late '73...Best move I ever made!! ☮
Steve Cropper is one of the most unsung heroes of rock guitar.
Sands of time Every video has a “this world famous, world renowned guitarist is underrated” post 😂

Proof that Cropper is underrated...everybody has heard of BB King only guitarists know of Cropper.

Sho you right
Time does funny things to ones mind ,they forget a lot.
Booker T sure as hell is one of the very best users of the interaction between Hammond and the mighty Leslie… just gets the balance right and does not over use the fast setting. Awesome track….

WADR to the now defunct Detroit radio station WJZZ jazz106 gingle “often imitated; never duplicated”!
Most Important, they were nice guys. I knew Steve and Duck from Audubon Golf Course and they treated everyone Great..
Along with James Brown they defined 60's soul and funk. R.I.P. Donald Duck Dunn. One of the greatest bass players of all time.
Anton Fig is a monster drummer man!
I am. I still listen to this at 52 years old. It's one of the greatest songs of all time. Still jammin' at their age.
To those who claim they didn’t do this song first…..they did it best!

Fogerty called this band the best back in the heyday of CCR.
+Daryl LeBeau yea but the vocals were a bit weak
Tim Mullens they couldn't dance either.
Quite weak in astro-physics as well,I`ve heard. But they sure can play.
Thats respect from someone who know true art /misic at it's best

Thanks for the info . Wondered where I’d heard something like it before !
I could hardly wait for Steve Cropper's fade out ending on this number 50 years ago. It was great . This was greater.

Aha! reminds me of the 1st time i entered a cinema hall-EONS AGO! Regal Cinema, Mombasa,Kenya,East Africa. Watched a very young Clint Eastwood then!
Brings back great memories. My high school boyfriend had a band and they did a great cover of this.
I put this record (45 rpm) on the box before leaving for school (6th grade) and would not make it out the door - the song stayed on repeat for hours, and of course I ended up hooking school because I could not break away from listening to this tune.
