    That was the best explanation/demonstration of this technique I've seen or heard, ever!

    Thanks.I am working on that.So far,no good but I will keep trying. I have been using overblows and overdraws for a long time but I usually avoid the 1 hole.I never had a problem with 7 o/d or any others. I was the first person I know to use 10 hole overdraw...I think because most people were following Howard Levy and he didn't seem to know about it- at least he never mentioned it in his instructional videos. I did my first one (by accident!) in 1966.

    Hi Tinus,
    Really informative vid. Thanks.
    Do you need to spend a lot of time setting up the hole 1 reeds to achieve these overblows?

  • @overblowcom
    @overblowcom  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally have never had this problem but I have heard from other people that have that especially on the hole 7 overdraw. I think that the problem is that you are using the same part of the tongue to do the choke and the overblow. Try to move the playing of the overblow more toward the back of the tongue as if you are doing it tongue blocked, that might help.

    @T-NO 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    try straightening out the reeds that will help choke the closing reed without it losing air and will let you gap just a little wider so the normal note will still play. Any curve in the reed will make it more difficult to choke the reed and means that you have to gap extra tight in order to get the overblow/overdraw.

      Tinus Koorn Thanks for that! 2 years later and I can get those notes of the 1st and 7th hole dependably. This is on my Low Eb up to my high G harmonicas.

    Also I could use the half choked double note, I like that too!

    Hi Tinus, thank you for all of your material! Sometimes I have trouble setting up holes 1 and 7 to play BOTH the natural note and the overblow and overdraw (On a C harmonica these notes are C to Eb and B to C#). If I get a good gap setting and I hold the overblow and overdraw the natural note will be unplayable. I of course open the gap a little but then the ease of playing the overblow/overdraw decreases. Any tips?

  • @dangerousdaveT

    Well,we will soon know.Have you seen Brendan power demonstrating it? Pretty good I would say!Maybe some of the lower blow bends need tweaking for better tone,but they are not very useful anyway- but might flow better in a particular riff.Of course the 2 hole blow bend will solve my problem with the 1 hole o/b !

    Thanks Tinus!
    One question, although you mostly play C Harps, what's the lowest harp you get the Overblow on the 1?
    For me A works good. I haven't got a Ab, on the G it's hard.
    Greetings
    Konstantin

    Amazing Tinus, always useful tips, what happened to your website

    • @overblowcom
      @overblowcom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Something happened to me; I have a condition called hyperacusis which is a oversensitivity to sound. Because of that I am unable to play harmonica. When the site broke I didn't feel like having anything to do with anything harmonica related. I am looking in to getting it back up now. Still can't play though.

    One of the problems I have with 1 hole overblow is that it tends to be too high in pitch- no problems bending it up, but I need to bend it down.I play it with the covers on.On a C harp it should be Eb but it is usually a quarter tone (at least) too high.Trying to bend it down,I lose purchase on it somehow and it reverts to C. It's ok with the plates off but you can't easily play a gig like that! Any tips or suggestions?

  • @overblowcom
    @overblowcom  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Konstantin, I can play a sustained overblow on the G harp hole 1. The only lower harp I have is a low C but I can't overblow hole 1 on that.

    The XB-40 does just what it says. The full chromatic scale is available through the same bending techniques that all accomplished diatonic players master.

    What is the easiest key? For instance my buddy suggested using a Bb to start overblowing and it helped. Thanks

    • @overblowcom
      @overblowcom  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don Schmitz It depends on the size of your head

    • @donschmitz2412
      @donschmitz2412 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kinda surprised by your answer, find it hysterical for some reason. I have a giant Northern European head. No joke. In my entire life I have found two guys who have bigger heads then me. Luckily I am a big guy and my giant head appears normal. Just out of curiosity how does that influence the key of harp you select? Now that you know I have a monster size head, do you have any suggestions re key? I also want to thank you for your very simple teaching methods and approach for difficult techniques. I can ob in several holes but am not good enough to integrate them even into scales. The challenge is fun! Thanks, Don

      overblowcom I’m guessing because of the natural resonant space?

  • @dangerousdaveT
    @dangerousdaveT 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    In reply to Frenk78rpm I did a recording of Miles Davis' "All Blues" way back when.(I think late 80's)
    In it I use the double note effect by half overblowing the 6 hole. (Yes!It was deliberate!) I think it sounds really cool and I had never heard anyone else do this at the time.It was very expressive of the feeling I had for this tune.

  • @pixelvnce
    @pixelvnce 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool! I gotta try that as overblows have been eluding me for sometime

  • @GlenDoll
    @GlenDoll 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The XB-40 DOES do that! That's why I started "SAVE the XB-40" on facebook. Hope you and Dave will check it out. I was going to post a link here, but it isn't working.

    • @overblowcom

      The same way you pla a normal bent note; by changing the resonance frequency of your mouth cavity.

    But still: Many players of diatonic harps don't want to mess with valves, wich are included with Sub 30 and Hohner XB 40. Of course there is still also the Suzuki overdrive but...

  • @overblowcom
    @overblowcom  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bending half steps is far more difficult than overblowing and you need all those bothersome half step bends if you play xb40.

  • @marcoevans4349
    @marcoevans4349 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am content with just playing all the "normal" notes and bends on my harmonica without resorting to ☠️voodoo☠️ just to get a couple more notes. Notes you can just as easily fake/imply or leave out of your song.
    Overblows=Overated 👏👏👏
