I saw this vid on my recommended and looked it up on Netflix, watched the whole movie and just finished it a minute ago. Now looking at the comments and literally every single one of them were my thoughts watching this
I want the "The Other Half of It" from Aster's POV. She was crushing on Ellie since day 1, watching her play in her father's church, being favorite heathen not mediocre, the intense look in the hallway, the shy smile in the toilet, inviting herself to the station and then getaway for the day to her secret place with her crush. Being alive, herself and scared to death around Ellie, so she kissed Paul to shook herself of her feelings for Ellie. Also, the million dollar 1000 watt smile after getting kissed by Ellie. Oh my, the fanfictions are my only respite, I have watched this movie 100 times on repeat and still cannot get over Aster and Ellie :D

My favourite moment was definitely the bathroom scene where they are just standing there, they don’t even have to say anything and yet the staring was honestly so intense
My favourite part of the movie is when they're just at that lake talking. It's just so beautifully shot and the dialogue is so good as well. Especially when Ellie talks about how every book, song and movie has a best part. I kinda feel like there was a bit of irony there because maybe the director was trying to imply that the scene was the best part of the movie which in my opinion it is.
I hadn't thought about it but I totally agree! It is one of my favorite scenes too, they have great chemistry that shows very well the comfort they feel when they are in each other's company. I love how there is originality in the film, it was cliché at a certain point but at the same time it showed me something new. The look of the letters exchanged until the drawing on the wall.

The director said it was a deliberate change in rhythm for the movie. Most of the film was fast-paced except when Aster found Ellie in Paul's room up until the hot springs. Bec when youre w someone you love, time slows down.
Aster knew Ellie wrote the letters the seconded after she opened her mouth about the painting and that hole invite thing was just an way of getting to feel what she felt in the letters safely

I watched this movie with my mom, and I'm there smiling deep inside during those silent gay moments of them together. While my mom never noticed anything unusual, and still thought Ellie and the guy will be together. She was in shock when she saw Ellie and Aster kissed at the end 😂 I was screaming and she just looked at me with question marks. 😂
If you think about it, the kiss from Elle was the actual first kiss Aster had where she felt true love. She didn't feel real love from Trig or from Munsky.

YES! I've watched the movie several times and it took many "takes" for me to catch that one. Love it. This movie has so much depth and much that just comes off as "clever" to me...in a good way.. Like insightful.
I actually tried this shit in real life. I genuinely thought she felt the same. I was shamelessly flirting with her with my eyes. I even held her hand a little bit too long in a handshake. And then i realized she is super straight and was just a very polite and nice person to not have embarrassed me.
At the end of this movie, I thought-I just love this movie. It starts out that Paul and Ellie love Aster, and by the end Paul and Aster love Ellie. Paul is a great character-I love how he comes to really see and appreciate Ellie. He is so supportive and protective of her and her dad. They are neighbors and Paul is lost in his family-though nice touch that his mom says she'll love him even if he is gay. His taco sausage passion. So sweet. I think Aster is clearly taken with Ellie, even seems to be seducing her in the pond scene-wades over and takes her shirt off and puts it on herself-you see it when they are floating about. I think Aster put on her shirt out of respect for Ellie. "I'm a Russian Doll of clothing!", great line! They are on an intellectual par and thus are, I think, fascinated with each other. Paul's speech about love and how there are many different ways to love was so poignant. It applies to all of their relationships. Complex film about love in the sweetest package! I also hope they do "The Other Half of It" (my working title).
Aster was like a bi icon since like that sundress and denim took my breath away. Also ellie is such an epitome of gay panic and longing. Their letters, convos etc made it seem like they were both in trance -detached from this world
i’m not even part of the lbtq+ community I just think it’s really cool how there’s a movie so many of y’all can relate to it’s makes me so happy to see people relate to something that feels like it belongs to them just how people have they’re own little things that feel like its for them. I love how they raised together in sync really showing how they were each other’s half. And I think aster knew that it was Ellie, every since she talked bout the left stroke and what it resembled - that’s why she said with Paul she felt “safe” meaning she felt as though it’s was normal but when she said his words felt “unsafe” it was cause she was feeling a great a lot of love for Ellie and the words and the understanding they both had showed they were really for each other and she maybe knew that.
There are numerous comments here on the relationships between Elle and Aster, but I wanted to comment on what I thought was the first and most basic relationship Elle had - the one with her father. It is the "quietest" one in the movie, but is foundational for the rest of the story. As a good little Chinese daughter, she is devoted to her father and up till now has not thought of going past the town boundaries because of that filial loyalty. But as Elle blossoms in her friendship with Paul and ultimately her relationship with Aster, her father quietly releases her from her self-imposed loyalty when he tells her he didn't want her to be like himself - defeated, withdrawn, depressed, with all ambition and hopes withered away - but to be like her mother. Not an explosive, joyous moment like the final kiss, but a quietly satisfying moment and a very real expression of her father's love.
This movie made me blush made me feel awkward and made me cringe... but I think it wasn’t cringe but more like butterflies... i skipped a lot but now I wanna watch it again...gosh I think this made me even more bi 😫😫😫

Really great song choices. They had so much potential. I actually like how open ended they left it. A sequel would be great but I think this is very realistic representation. And it didn’t end with a tragedy or lgbt+ dying! Ellie says I hope you find something good to believe in, not it. But no worries ✌🏾
I only watched this movie cause I saw a few comps similar to this abt ellie and aster and thought it looked like a nice movie, didn't realize how it would become one of my favourite movies ever. I’m not a big fan of romance but this rocks! I stan both Ellie x Aster and Paul x Ellie. All of their chemistry is no joke. Wish there was part 2 or smth but probably Netflix’s not goin to sadly. Really great song choices. They had so much potential. I actually like how open ended they left it. A sequel would be great but I think this is very realistic representation. I only watched this movie cause I saw a few comps similar to this abt ellie and aster and thought it looked like a nice movie, didn't realize how it would become one of my favourite movies ever. Also, my fav moment was definitely the second date between paul and aster where ellie decided to start texting aster in the middle. Thought it was a really fun and creative scene.

I’m not a big fan of romance but this rocks! I stan both Ellie x Aster and Paul x Ellie. All of their chemistry is no joke. Wish there was part 2 or smth but probably Netflix’s not goin to sadly. The things that Ellie said in the church is everything. Btw Aster seems like having a hard time accepting she likes girls cuz her strict family and stuff, got messed up in somehow so..

The ending is kinda satisfying even though they didn’t end up. I mean I’m reality it’s kinda rare that ppl didn’t end up with the one they love.. it’s the way this world works. Only in fairy tales these happy ending works. But Ellie found her another half and also Aster. Paul is so cute that he even searched that “how you know you are gay” he’s trying to understand Ellie even though he believes it’s a sin. The last scene he ran along with the train so just so so cute and heartwarming.... But after Ellie said “Moron” just cracks me up lmaooo
But still I think she likes Ellie from the start lmao:: still my opinion though 😂😂
