Seven Maori were either fined or jailed under the TSA 1907. I was able to find 3 names out of the 7 after a day searching online.

6 months jail was the hashiest penalty passed down under the act to a Pakeha woman Mary Ann Hill whoses remedies killed a number of people. 6th months is hardly a deterate which probably explains why this knowledge around rongoa was not lost was not lost. If you read the act it was targetted at specific behaviors.

The Tohunga Suppression Act did not make Maori medicine illegal per se. The Act was to protect Maori people from quacks and charlatans who claimed supernatural powers for the treatment and curing of disease. The bill was introduced by James Carroll and supported by all four Maori MPs.

Correct, people should read the Act instead of believing more claims of colonial harm. Maori advocated for this, and it is only suppression of self appointed tohunga with no cultural knowledge using pretend spiritual elements for healing that actually caused harm. Not suppression of tohunga in general. Similar law was passed against quack doctors selling fake potions at the time and preying on people's desperation. That law didnt mean all doctors had to stop practice, just as the tohunga act didnt mean all tohunga had to stop either.

Sure mate, a law to protect the natives whom they obviously cared soo much about. They were racist catholic laws to prevent Maori from practicing the fullness of their spirituality, plain and simple!

Our tohunga could never fake their mana, we knew by korero from whanau who they were, but pakeha definitely were fake and still are, THS act was to stop our people from using our Tohunga to use pakeha Doctors and their poisons

@@kayleigh8957 lol, you're makijg it sound like english gave a shit about maori, and did them a favour. haha, they didn't, they basically wanted to strip maori of their practices so they have less and less identity. They took all of maori land...and then and say, "Oh look, we're just trying to help you"... hahaha GF

Whoever made this video and posted it, you're either very poorly informed, or deliberately spreading false vilifying history.

I'm not sure this is a valid question but I will ask anyway, are you of Maori descent? I agree there is 'Some' truth to your statement, but, look at history it didn't stop there. Colonial harm wow, there are many, many acts that have been directed at Maori to impede their development in this country. 'Every person who gathers Maoris around him by practising on their superstition or credulity' this can also mean any knowledge Maori had developed pre-European contact and wasn't of European origins, which eventually went onto language, culture, socioeconomics so on etc.
