  • Trying to grow a 2000lb Giant Pumpkin - week-by-week series
    EPISODE 7 - June 4th - June 5th
At this time of year the plant is growing fast in multiple directions. The secondary vines require some organization to get them positioned where I want them.
The plants get some frequent applications of soluble fertilizers to supplement what's in the soil.
And finally wind is a major risk to these leafy plants, so I'm trying out some wind protection that some other, better growers have been using with success.
BTW - all this year's videos now have captions in them to explain some of what I'm doing.

nice looking plants a couple of questions . what is your fertilizing program . do you soil test / how old are the plants since you put them in the ground . and how old were they before you planted

I started the seeds April 12th, transplanted them outside May 6th. Yes soil test every spring and then add fertilizer amendments based on the test results. The fertilizing plan really varies depending on how the plants are looking

is it important that grass doesn’t grow underneath? i started a mound in my backyard but never cleared the ground of grass. should i lay down landscaping fabric ?

Grass will make root competition with the pumpkin plant.

Hey Ben - at each leaf node there are roots, so if there's grass it will be harder for the roots to get to the soil, and once they're there there's competition with the grass roots (as DrZergling said). Landscape fabric won't help with that. Ideally there wouldn't be any grass. But maybe as a middle ground you could still bury the vines at the leaf nodes to give the roots the best chances of success

Nothing too exciting - just a regular vegetable garden for a couple of years
