Nixon's profound understanding of foreign affairs is simply masterful. He's well spoken, articulate, lays out his plans thoughtfully. Nixon knew how to play chess on the world stage, and he does not get enough credit for this!

But there was a mess up. He didn't manage to contain the Watergate scandal... Because containing it ran into the problem that US public servants found it against their conscience to suppress the investigation.

Definitely the most misunderstood president in history, but Detente is the clearest example of where Nixon was wrong and Reagan was right. Nixon's whole attitude toward the Soviets and their satellite states was "Let's figure out how to get along as best as we can, minimize damage, and keep things contained," while Reagan's whole approach to the Soviets was simply, "We win, they lose." In essence, Nixon was right at the retail level but wrong at the corporate level.

Good comments. I think the difference was that Nixon was seeing the world as it existed, while Reagn was seeing the world through the emerging neo-Con world view: That the US must defeat the Soviets and Communism.
Nixon realized that Communism had its merits among Third World nations, and that opposing it in those environments would likely grow into mission creep. He was not a neo-Con who was determined to pay the cost in American lives. As an example, look at the bloodbath in El Salvadore and Nicaragua.
Reagan's team complimented his own belief that Communism must be defeated in detail - never to return. Also, Reagan saw the fall of the Berlin Wall as justification for all the chest thumping that occurred among those neo-Cons in America. I remember eveyone that was anybody in DC taking the Victory Lap in public. Later a certain Russian ex-KGB officer would not forget that humiliation. I don't think Nixon would have allowed the huge public displays of hubris - knowing what could happen in the future.

First and only 15 minutes late, what surprises me is how highly he thought of Russians despite the communism they were under. Chinese too of course which he is definitely correct about but in particular the Russians and his rather benevolent views of them. It is a magnanimity that I find difficult to emulate despite how necessary it was, still is. Edit: Wait Wait Wait, détente with containment? Okay, that is more believable. I was wondering why America was sitting idle when so many countries were falling to communism and I am glad some voices were haranguing the government. I need someone to explain this détente thing now.

I hope everyone sees the analogies that Nixon mentions in regards to Afghanistan as it relates to Ukraine. @@sliftyy ruZZian troops appeared on the peninsula as early as February 20th 2014 - almost a month before the so-called "referendum." That's when Crimea's occupation and annexation process began. Those taking part in this process were awarded ruZZia's Ministry of Assault "For the return of Crimea" medals (dated 20 February - 18 March 2014). Putin himself has occasionally admitted to the occupation and annexation in the wake of it (not right away, though; it took him a couple of years). The sham "referendum" was being conducted under factual ruZZian occupation lasting almost a month at that point. Before the "referendum", the actual Crimean government was dismissed and pro-ruZZIan Aksyonov one was installed instead. Do you really think people who had been living on the peninsula under ruZZian troops' control for almost a month prior to the "referendum" would have voted otherwise, not in the favor of ruZZia? Only complete fool would believe that. The occupation and annexation of Crimea was largely condemned by the international community and perceived for what it is, and not what ruZZia or its minions have tried to portray it was. You simply cannot say anything against all these arguments, so there's just no use replying it.
