“Extremely online people” in my experience are extremely dangerous. I don’t need that in my life. I use the internet to learn, not to peacock, boast, or indulge in pride.

Nice one! I'm terminally online myself. I don't use Twitter or Reddit or Instagram at all, but I do fall into the same trappings with TH-cam. I watch a lot of creators and really admire their ability to put themselves out there and contribute content like you have here. Sometimes I get that feeling of inadequacy for not having the courage / skill to contribute myself. Maybe one day I'll try.

I have studiously avoid twitter unless something I'm interesting is happening in current events but I am thinking facebook has gotten quite sticky (not toxic - just a lot) and increasingly irrelevant ads and suggested content (they're also wanting to dial up the 'engagement' i.e. outrage by trying to hook me with things I definitely disagree with). and let's be real the 'endless lake' ==. k-hole of youtube is also a massive time-suck

I'm on the same page! I recently deleted Instagram and Twitter apps from my mobile and I unfollowed 100% of people on Twitter, adding the ones I am interest in to lists. It helped a bit, but that was not enough to keep myself distant from all the drama. So now I am considering taking a 30 day break! Feels good to know I'm not alone. Enjoy the silence, brother. Enjoy the silence.

Completely agree. I've pulled away from most social media and only check my feeds once or twice a day. Once you get past the FOMO feeling, it is almost scary how much you realize you don't need it and how much time you feel was almost wasted on it.

Yes, there’s something in this video. That is revealing the real-world developer’s life instead of hello world.
I had this anxiety as a not cool enough developer. I record my vlog telling what I’m worrying about and how I’m stuck. But I know no one is interested.
Recently I’m accidentally disconnected from the online developer world. I did feel nervous about losing track of the newest or coolest tech stack and missing the You Should not XXX title videos. However, I never felt so connected to the real world.
There are pros and cons of connecting online. It’s just like connecting the nerve with other people so we share the feelings, share what we learned, and also share the anxiety.
There are plenty of tech videos but lack this type of video that share honest feelings. It is something I believe developers need. We care too much about logic or algorithms but forget that we are humans, and our feelings matter.

IMO there is a technique to quitting technology for good. When I tried stopping everything cold turkey like pulling out sim cards, unplugging all electronics, etc. I ended up in a pickle trying to explain to friends and family why I was unreachable. So my word of advice to anyone trying to enjoy the physical world, is inform the people that you care about before quitting cold turkey.

Watched to the end and I think it's partly about what we obligate ourselves to do. When I first started my teeny tiny channel I wanted to do a video every week. But then I realised, I have more pressing obligations, so I create stuff only when I want to. I try not to care about it so much. Hope you find some way of maintaining your work and doing the stuff you love.

  • @Soularia-Sevine

Like you, I'm also chronically online. I find myself that when I can't sleep I watch TH-cam. When I'm at work I spend time reading Reddit or Twitter. Much like others I use the internet as a distraction, but when I see the success of others it makes me feel small about my own. I'm from a small town in Arkansas where most friends, family. I know the most about computers and tech. But it was because I used computers as my escape from the small-mindedness of my area. But, I see your point so much of the internet is toxic. I wish you the best in your hiatus but, also don't let Twitter or others bring you back in and then bring you down.

Thanks for this genuine talk. For me it took a while to internalize that 'building connections' is not always the same as 'staying connected' even though they often overlap. One example is how people can still be best friends even after not staying in contact for years. I've always known this but in practice it is so easy to get caught up staying online and unknowingly become traffic number to social network overlords, and in turn miss out doing other stuff that might have actually mattered.

This is exactly what happened to me when I moved to another country. I stopped streaming for a while, I stopped being on the net so much to prepare everything for the move. Totally see myself in this, although not Twitter, since I don't use it, and not a community in particular, but it does happen a lot where I feel like I need to know this many frameworks, this many languages, the integrations they have, have this much knowledge on a particular topic, say system administration related or DevOps... And then yeah, comparing myself to someone who does those things, or even worse, multiple people doing each of those things but in my mind it''s like it all comes from one person, and it just feels awful, feels like there's not enough time to learn all of that etc...

I thoroughly understand the way you feel. We all feel that way from time to time but to be honest, I don't think the internet is the problem. You can hand someone a hammer and they can do useful things with it, as well as smash someone's head.
I believe we can reduce the negative impact that the internet can have on us by doing things that make us stay more connected with ourselves. I know it's not easy because I've also been fighting this battle for awhile. Thank you for sharing your feelings about it, I really appreciate it. Keep up with the great content.

It's been about a year since I quit Twitter cold turkey. I mostly don't regret it, other than the fact that I did make a lot of connections that could've potentially helped me out personally or professionally down the line. For the most part, though, Twitter was taking a big toll on my mental health. My feed was full of more successful folks and their side hustles and it just made me feel comparatively inadequate. I constantly felt pressured to keep up with the latest tech news and insert myself into discussions (and write articles) and check notifications for likes, just to stay "relevant" and feel validated. It warped my self esteem and changed how I felt about tech writing. Any sort of extrinsic motivation will do that, though-for example, getting paid to write articles versus writing for the love of the craft or because you're really passionate about a topic.
The sad thing is that my online addiction hasn't necessarily improved after quitting-Reddit and TH-cam have just filled that void.

Used to live in the ozarks and have similar thoughts all the time. When I went to college, I noticed my friends from big cities like chicago and new york tended to have higher tolerance for using technology all day. Not sure what that means, but anyways, the cure to doom scrolling for me was establishing a solid morning routine. Make a good breakfast, get some random chores done, go to the gym, etc., all without a phone. It feels super awkward at first, but like after a month it feels weird using your phone as a crutch.

I removed instagram, and cut my twitter time by 80% JUST BECAUSE of this. I also find it tough because if not for twitter/twitch (being extremely online) I'd have never found the community I'm in right now. But I also think there needs to be extremely offline time, and insane balance for you to have fun and not feel horrible.
Also +1 on the anxiety part. I need me a loooong vacation offline to get rid of it now feels like

100 percent agree. I've also purged myself more and more over the years from social media and ive never had any regrets.
Oddly enough to me I've found that there's this bliss in not knowing stuff? (Not just dev) Yeah, it's tricky because natively there is that combat of imposter syndrome in the field and it sucks because it really takes a toll on in certain environments.
Ultimately for me, I think we all should just mess up faster - together. Lol I know that's sounds counter intuitive / productive but I feel like time is best spent nowadays by making each other better. Regardless, of the IDE/tech stack water cooler mumbo jumbo I'm sure social media fuels.
Let's just make cool shit, share it, learn more and be less bad the next time haha.

There's toxicity wherever you look, it's the ability to step away from those people who perpetuate it is the long term peace of mind goal. There's safe places on twitter and elsewhere in life. You don't have to get sucked in by it all but I guess everyone's different it can be harder to switch off from that. I do accept I've had to move away from some people online because it's just non-stop from them and it's not healthy for them or anyone else involved long term.

"Don't be on the internet, is bad for you" might be the wrong way to phrase "avoid excess".
I'm on Reddit/ Twitter/ IG, but not for the karma/ discussions/ interactions like I used to, which was toxic.
I'm there for the break, for the memes, or for reserch purposes (Reddit is Google's right hand at this point). You should be on internet for the break, but if you're on a break from the internet, that just means you might be dealing with either excess or the wrong focus/ use of the platforms.
It's hard to change the perspective of social media, but once you accept what's bad for you, you don't ditch internet, you ditch bad behaviour for yourself.
...or just take trips regularly, as devs can't really "quit" haha.
