There are 6 Gorkha regiments in Indian army that recruits both Nepali speaking Indians as well as Nepali citizens. Many have died while defending India. But for Bollywood ,Gorkha are only Chinese looking fellow who are watchmen and says Saabji. Also only 30 % of Nepali people have East Asian (Chinese) features. They are called Janajatis. Rest of Nepali population are Madhesi and Khas. Around 30 % of Nepali are of Madhesi origin and are indistinguishable from people of UP and Bihar and 30 % of Nepali people are Khas who share racial traits with Kashmiri people and people of Kumaon and Garhwal and HP.
That's why even when I am Newar, I have Indo aryan facial features and when I say to an Indian that I am Nepali he wont believe me because I don't look "Chinese"
you have shown this complex community as just " Saabjee" saying Chinese looking Gurkha. First improve yourself before you blame Hollywood.

Imagine you have two students do something bad. But one of them gets a slap and the other one gets 50 lashes and is dragged by a horse. This is basically the PR equivalent to what happens in India. There are often many western countries that are in a worse situation than India when it comes to certain crisis situations. But the media will go overboard in its criticism of India and not even talk about others. This is what the problem is. Pop culture and media will always showcase an Indian problem as 10 times worse than it actually is due to racism or elitism. Either you apply the same standards to India as you apply to other countries, or you don't call yourself "unbiased".

Okay so here is the short answer, using two questions.
What do you first notice when you land in a country like US or UK? You see cleanliness, infra etc , things that can be associated with 'development'. Coz that's what is majority. In the minority he may be able to see slum areas or other such elements that can be associated with non-development.
What a foreigner sees when he lands in India? You figure out what's the majority and what's the minority.
That's how the Human brain works.

But indians will keep their head down and do nothing. This makes them seem weak which ultimately gives them a bad representation in media. My Advice, don't believe in these Rankings. They are inherently anti - south asian / anti - Indian. You may say that maybe I am "Indian Nationalist" but India is perhaps the only Major Democratic Economy that has not only successfully Challenged the European World Order but also successfully established its own identity. Till late 1980s, USA and Western Europe stereotyped China but from early 1990s onwards USA - China relations improved and China literally sold itself to the West. The result China is World's 2nd Largest Economy and immensely Rich. From 1947 onwards, India however never bowed or gave into the West. Rather India favoured USSR and Islamic Countries (both which were considered as enemies by USA), but USA & Western Europe supported Israel. India's biggest problem lies with its "IMAGE" and unlike Chinese, Japanese or Koreans, Indians (abroad or even within India) have done seldom to change it.

We do quite the same in Bollywood
And there are exceptions in both the Industries; like Rang De Basanti in Bollywood & Life of Pi in Hollywood
At the end of the day it’s up to the directors on how they want to represent various characters

  • @thestruggler23
    @thestruggler23 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

The representation of Different cultures in India is also the same, Just look how we ridicule Chinese and African culture. And Majority of our hit films don't show the ground reality and the 80% India. If a film like Salam Bombay which shows the reality without any fancy dance numbers then it is bad?. India has a huge poverty problem and that's a fact. And we Indians are the most racist people in the world. We are even racist towards are own people, toward north eastern, toward biharis, toward bengolis, toward south Indians. Before pointing out whats wrong in Hollywood or the west, we should see what's going in Indian Cinema and in our country. Now China is not seen has a Poor country in the West because they have really developed and if someone call the country poor he/she will get ridiculed for it but in Indias case thats not true.

@@vedantrusty what i got from this video is that Hollywood represents India in a caricaturish way. But an Industry which is built by White people and runs because of White people then why they will try to please someone else?. Have you seen any Indian Film showing the life of a Chinese, Jamaican, Korean man in a true way?. And what i really didn't like is how you indirectly said that Films like Salam Bombay, GullyBoy, SlumDog Millionaire put us Indian in a bad light and show us as poor but I see this movie close to reality. Let me ask you if you are a Producer of a Comedy show like the 'Simson' whose whole point is to make jokes out of everyday situations, would consider hiring a Team just to study a Non-Indian Culture so you can put them in your show?. The Main Character of the Simpsons is portrayed as a Dumb White American just like Peter in Family Guy.

Representation of Indian women and Indian men in Hollywood is a different matter altogether. Indian women have always been represented as talended, hot and exotic women while Indian men have always been the punchline of joke. Nerdy, shy and often times just there for the comic relief.
A prime example of this is in the big bang theory. Look at how Raj is represented in contrast to his sister Priya.
The big sick was the first film I saw where the Indian man wasn't a comic relief.

bhai idt anything is wrong , indians hote hain gareeb , dark skinned and underpriviliged thats the harsh and blatant truth just see our gdp per capita , not everyone in india has an access to basic necessaties by that i mean majority of india lives below the poverty line . There is nothing wrong in showcassing whats already present yes there is alot we can improve for sure, but turning a blind eye towards problems is never the solution either. Make get alot of hate for this comment but thats my two cents on the matter.

There are 5 states in South India but y'all like to just show a generic "Madarasi" that dresses up like an Iyer Bramhin in 1940s and says Aiyo and adds Jee after every thing.
First evolve yourself before "correcting" Hollywood.

Lol! Bro talking about Hollywood stereotypes totally ignoring bollywood stereotyping. What about these stereotypes of Bollywood?
    1. Punjabis being portrayed as dumb comedic characters.
    2. Nepalis are always shown as watchmen with that irritating "Shaab ji".
    3. Bengalis are stereotyped for "fish" and "Oori baba".
    4. South Indian characters are mocked time and again for their accents and skin colour.
    5. Bihari characters shown as socially awkward nerds.
And there are many such other examples.
