  • In this video, we'll take a look at an engine I've had my eyes out for a little while now, the beautiful 773 New York Central Hudson!! I picked up this engine off of Facebook Marketplace, and boy does this engine really shine bright! So happy to have a scale steamer in the collection! Hope you enjoy today's video, thanks for watching!

Great video. I don't think you'll find a model rail enthusiast who doesn't have a soft spot for the Hudson. Beautiful engine. Your layout is great looking as well!

I have the same exact locomotive . It’s currently apart on my work bench. The connection between the engine and the tender became frayed and two of the four wires broke. So I was in the process of replacing the connection with a new style molex connector. I then decided to replace the electronics with Lionel TMCC which I purchased at a show. It’s a great looking full scale engine and pulls like an animal. Good luck with yours it looks mint and sounds like you got a good deal on it. I will tell you use extra caution disconnecting the engine from the tender as the connecter seems to be fragile. And too much use can damage it. I also found the wires to be very thin. Somewhere around 22 gauge or possibly thinner. By the way that’s a terrific looking layout you have there

Thank you for the comment, I'll definitely make note of those wires! The connection between the loco and tender is pretty good at the moment because this engine wasn't used too much, but I can see how over time the wires could be weakened. Thanks for watching and glad you like the layout!

Hi Corey, it was really great to meet you at Amherst and chat with you. I did see RJ and Chris of Chris's Tarins and Things and chatted with both. As always, a great video explaining your recent purchase. Keep up the good work.

Very nice locomotive. Williams is a great alternative if you just want the locomotive and your not worried about haveing a collector. I like how Williams locomotives always start out going forward. Good job here Cory. Ken

The Williams Scale Hudson Is a Great alternative to the more expensive models of Lionel or MTH. I remember first seeing them in the Williams 1995 catalog along with their Masterpiece series brass Hudson with sound at 1500 dollars . The original Price for the Diecast models were 650 dollars. I am glad Bachman continued these scale models. I have also seen the Scale Hudson In other Road Names. Sounds like you got a great deal on your 773.

Thanks for the comment Richard!! Seems Williams has some great alternatives out there which I'll definitely consider, especially at their lower prices!

The interesting thing about Williams in the old days was "suggested retail" prices in their catalogs were typically strictly that. You could find new Williams products at train shows selling for considerably less than that.
I remember purchasing a Williams Jersey Central GP9 in 2014 for $145 when the suggested was $269.

Holy cow what a coincidence… I have this exact locomotive same road number and everything, I’ve had it since I was a kid. About a year ago we threw a Lionel rail sounds system to do it justice, I’m glad to see people enjoy the Williams true O scale Hudson, I’ve enjoyed mine my whole life and now that it has proper sound i enjoy it 1000% more.

Very Nice! I didn’t know that there was a Polish Community Center! Williams really did a Nice Job with the red light bulb in the Cab of the 773. The proper Name of this locomotive is actually the J1E

Excellent video! I’ve been looking for a scale Hudson to add to my collection as well. Ended up getting a Lionel 5340 from 1990 and LOVE it so far. Fantastic puller and looks great, too.

Congratulations Corey, that's a great looking engine! Yeah, I'm still plenty PO'd at Bachman buying Williams and then apparantly not knowing what to do with it. What a shame.
I'm with you, the first time I saw an actual 1/48 scale steam engine at a train show I was shocked at how big it was! However my layout's too small for scale steamers but I can live with that, look at the money I save!
And right, for pure value it's hard to beat a Williams product. Luckily there's still quite a few around and with collector interest practically zero the prices tend to be pretty reasonable.
And if you want you can upgrade the Williams standard steam whistle sound package very easily with a steam sound package from ERR by 3d Rail. ERR's are a bit pricy but the quality's excellent.
And don't let anyone tell you you're being non-prototypical pulling freight with a Hudson, toward the end of the steam era the NYC certainly did use Hudsons on freight. First, last, and always it's "Power for the run!"
I like that 48 star flag in the background, a nice salute to the Post-War Era!
    Thanks for posting!

Thank you for the nice words like always Wayne, its too bad Williams doesn't do nearly what they used too. I always like seeing their stuff at train shows, especially at the cheaper price. I have a few friends who've used ERR so I might check it out further down the road.

Thank you for showing that Lionel is not the only game in town. Inflation and the decay of the dollar. Forces Lionel’s price is up. But Lionel’s prices in the last catalog
Are inflating to me they compounded the problem nothing for me in this catalog or the last one or the one before that.
