you’re completely right but i think that the reason why people like him regardless of how despicable he is, is because the show explains his background story and allows people to understand him and empathize. if he had been shown as a simple abuser who apparently only hits women because it makes him feel powerful people would absolutely despise him, but because he’s also portrayed as an abused teen boy (because truly all the characters are supposed to be children) then it makes him more human and perhaps even a little likeable amidst the pity
