Spot on! As a young kid I was all about Jim Morrison, even though he was long dead before I was born . Anyways... then the powerhouse that was Layne Staley caught my ear and has continued to hold it all these years later. I will always love Mr. MojoRisin’ , but Layne has pierced my soul like no one before or after . I listen to him daily . Sometimes I put on some Doors, or Scott Weiland in any and all of his different bands and forms , of course some Chris Cornell, but always, always I listen to Layne . R.I.P. to all lost too soon and thanks for being the soundtrack of my life ❤️

Here's a lesson in supporting the opening band.
AIC was touring with Van Halen as their opening band and Jerry was raving about how good Eddie Van Halen's sound was and Eddie hands him his guitar and goes "Here, have a go!"
Of course when somebody like Eddie Van Halen offers you to play his guitar through his amps, you'd have to be galactically stupid to say "No." Jerry was smitten with the sounds he got from that set up but also heartbroken because he couldn't afford it and tells Eddie so.
The tour comes to an end, all the members of AIC go home and Jerry's landlord goes "Ah finally, now you can help me move that stuff that has been delivered to you!"
Waiting for Jerry were two Peavey 5150 full stacks and two musicman Eddie Van Halen guitars, a parting gift from Eddie Van Halen himself. And as this footage shows, Jerry didn't let that gesture go to waste.

I have a love and hate relationship with that time period. I am 52 now, so i was, give or take a year, the same age as jerry at the time. I was 20 years old in 1990.
Alot of really nasty shit was going on in the world. War. In iraq. People were dying.
The last remnants of new wave music from the 80's came to an end. Gangster rap was big. NWA, Ice Cube, Dr Dre ,Snoop Dog made his first appearance as well during that time. The rise of the guitar was once again on its way. Santana, clapton and all those still alive from the 60's and 70's rock had a revival adding to the protest movement of the time. R&B as well as dance music was still in the charts.
Funny enough Pink Floyd released their last music with The Division Bell. That is until last week when Pink Floyd released their first piece of music in over 25 years. Also a protest song benefiting ukraine.
Then we had the rodney king affair on TV and the OJ simpson trial on TV. When rodneys verdict of not guilty for the pigs came out all fucking hell broke loose in california at the time. I was living in california at the time. LA broke out in riots and the city burned for days and weeks. Blacks had every reason to be fucking upset. Look at the rodney king beating and tell me they are not guilty. No wonder the city burned.
I was doing acid nearly every single weekend as were a lot of kids. Smoking weed just about every day. As were most people in california - it was still illegal back in thsoe days. I did not drink. I had a bad methamphetamine habit. I thought i was going to fucking die with my heart exploding.
Then kurt died in 94 and that was pretty much the start of the end of that era. 96 was the AIC unplugged and before that they hardly did any shows at all. I think the last reg tour AIC did was in 93 or 94. I cant rem. But there was a huge gap leading up to the unplugged session. By 97 id say it was already over. It lasted 5 years or a tad bit more. We had 5 glorious years.
Now i am a semi-old man with greying hair and i look to todays youth and think to myself why dont they make music like we did. The music is different. Where is the energy? Where is die angst?
Now we get perfectly auto-tuned, pitch perfect, instantly auto-corrected singing that has no soul, no life and no substance. Bands are thrown together by committee in talent shows and these are the people sellign music to you. Music has almost lost its soul.
There is a reason as to why i still 30 years later listen to AIC on a daily basis.

I was fortunate enough to take voice lessons from the same teacher that Layne did, a guy so revered in the Seattle scene everyone just referred to him as The Maestro. He said Layne was among his top students who took the craft of vocals VERY seriously and embodied the first rule the Maestro imparted to me in my very first lesson: "Singing is controlled screaming".
Layne clearly took that to heart and nobody did it better.

The man's voice is just something from out of this world. Never been a singer that can do anything like this since, from the power in the low notes and range in high notes. He takes me to a different place every single time I hear him, 25 years after the first time I heard an AIC song. Amazing.

Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range.
However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song:
Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl.
Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.

Know me broken by my master
Teach thee on child, love hereafter
    Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
    Drifting body, it's sole desertion
Flying, not yet quite the notion
    Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
    Into the flood again

So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
    Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
    Have I gone?
    Left you here alone
    Am I wrong?

Layne was singing from deep within his soul here. The chorus will be understood by anyone who has battled addiction. Amazing band, those drums are really difficult to do with the toms and that bass tone at the beginning. But Layne was really releasing his anguish here but was also lost in the music at some points. That's part of the beauty of music and this song is a masterpiece.
