Great, informative video Mick. Exactly what you explained happened to me regarding the flashing after feeding.

I'm in California and it never seems to get super cold. I wonder if feeding them regularly throughout the winter helps speed up growth?

They don't really grow in cold water I feed mine just to get them off bottom
Even the fry stop growing in cold water

Wheatgerm food is made for low temperatures down to 6 you have to feed Wheatgerm food cos they cannot digest summer food in cold water and can damage there swim bladder Wheatgerm food is like fibre to us it makes you digestive system work faster 👍

Absolutely love your main pond buddy, and the fish are fantastic. Do they ever damage themselves on the sides?
I haven't fed since pretty much the pond has been finished, which was towards the end of autumn. Then the winter hit so definitely didn't feed then due to low temps and a mixture of hardly any bacteria too.
But now I've just this week fitted a heater and I am slowly bringing the water temperature up to get it to around 15c. Would you still feed a wheat germ in this instance and at what temperature would you be happy to start feeding high protein? Im a little reluctant to start feeding high protein due to the low bacteria levels currently. Thanks

Had my showa damaged its eye trying to spawn in reeds last year but its all healing nicely I would still feed wheatgerm for a few weeks after 12 degrees and slowly up the feed over a few weeks to let bacteria grow nitrifying bacteria stays alive down to 5 degrees ponds just don't have alot after winter cos there is not alot of ammonia for it to feed on so it starves and shrinks

Thanks the skimmer is a 50 good skimmer but you have to wait cable down or it just gets notted up under water loads of pull on surface though cable problem only problem I have had and its been in 3 years 👍

@@Matsuba81 don't no what you disagree with pond nitrifying bacteria is alive down to 40f unless frozen its growth rate is cut by 50 percent at at 65f 75 percent at 50f no growth at 40f

@@colrobbo2821 Temps are up and down defo not a time to be getting koi back on the feed in an outdoor pond especially on a 39% protein food i think was said . Too many people on you tube now advising people what to do and actually have no idea seeing it more and more lately , this guy can say what he wants but i defo don't agree with him .You tube is getting a very dangerous place for koi keepers i feel.
